Gram Parsons wrote this for his Grandmother. When The Byrds played their one and only show at the Grand Ole Opry, and they were being booed because they were "long haired hippies !and they even got a haircut before show) he switched from the song they were supposed to play to Hickory Wind and dedicated to his grandmother. The song a songwriter works all his life to write, that one awesome song. Gram Parsons did it.
I wonder along with Fred. Obviously the membership has changed and we all miss Duffey. But the group in its current form adheres, in my view, to a sound that is uniquely that of the Seldom Scene of old. If you're missing the old Scene, well, OK, you're not alone. But the Seldom Scene endures because of its current members, and I think they do a damn fine job. Well, that's my 2 cents.
Fred always a gentleman and I would be curious too, this has been a class act since the beginning and still is, no matter the change, they still have that "sound" and feeling that brought me to bluegrass and dobro. Fred this is Alan Rausch dobro player from Flatland Drive, we are at Castaways again this year, but on a different day.
Thank you gent's for your fine music.......great vocals, musicianship.....perhaps one day will see you all in Michigan. Meanwhile I will be out front near our oak tree listening for that hickory wind.
Hey there, gonefishingjo1! This is Fred Travers, dobro player with the Seldom Scene. I respect your comment on this video. All are welcome for sure. But Im curious, what is it about the Band that has performed together since 1996 that makes us a disgrace to the Seldom Scene? No hard feelings, Im just curious as to your response.
Not bad, but as dogpatch said below, the best by far is Tuttles with AJ Lee. That's why it has 143,000 views as of May 2014. AJ Lee's voice is a godsend. Check her out.
I actually prefer the current lineup. The "trio" harmonizes more than the old lineups. Mike Auldridge was a legend, of course, but he didn't contribute as much vocally as Fred does.
They do a great job...Grams version is and will always be my favorite......hearing many different younger artist recordings and playing these songs keeping it all goin it would be to hard for me to pick a winner ....Goodness, Grace, Happiness and Continued Memories to Great Music ol man way down in TX...jd

RIP John Duffy , Seldom Scene will never be the same.

JD and new south best version I've heard. Got the man singing lead. Mr. Keith Whitley!!!
Lou sounds just like John Duffy in this tune. Haunting and beautiful.
So true! It's the one of my most favorite song.

Fred Travers you remind me so much of Auldridge. Couldnt ha e found a better dobro player. STILL that lonely great sound and your singing as well
it does not get any better than this
Yes....Yes it does!...a whole lot better.
@@dannyirvine4262 Yep, gotta agree. They put their spin on it I think to differentiate them from the original Seldom Scene and screwed it up IMO.

+jim thereafter , that question was for Shane Roberts

AJ Lee and the Tuttles doing this one live is the best version I have ever heard. Love it.
Gram Parsons original with the byrds is the best.

A great song! These guys do a good job. The best version of this song by far is done by The Tuttles with AJ Lee!!!
