  • Western superstar William Boyd returns as Hopalong Cassidy in this classic 1936 series entry and is joined by sidekick (also superstar) George “Gabby” Hayes. He’s “Windy” in the Hoppy films, and it’s easy to see why he became, and remains, so popular.
When beautiful Evelyn Brent is thrown from her horse, she is saved by Hoppy. Sparks fly before he realizes she is the saloon “hostess” and secretly the leader of a gang of outlaws!
Some very nice scenes between Boyd and Brent gives this B western adult appeal.
Missing from this, the 7th Hoppy western, is sidekick Jimmy Ellison. Taking his place, for the first and only time is…Hoppy’s younger brother Buddy Cassidy played by William Janney. Actor Morris Ankrum (still billed as Stephen Morris) works for Brent. His name is “Blackie.” Ya think he’s a bad guy? Other familiar faces in HOPALONG CASSIDY RETURNS are singer Ray Whitley, Al St. John, Grant Richards, and Hank Bell.
Producer Pop Sherman liked this story so much, he remade it a couple of years later as WIDE OPEN SPACES, again with Brent as the villain. Stunningly photographed, as usual, by Archie Stout (THE QUIET MAN, FORT APACHE, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY) is another reason this film is one of the finest B westerns or the era. Hey, at 74 minutes, it’s also longer than most of them.

Greetings, Big Rob and Big John, many thanks, and an FYI: I just finished watching the 66th film of the entire film series "Strange Gamble" (1948), so I have viewed every single Hoppy film that was in theatrical release. My overall opinion is that the last 12 films, which Boyd himself produced, were by far and away the very best in scripting, production values and acting. A real shame that he didn't make more. I am now starting on the radio series, which ran along the same time as the TV series, with which I grew up and whose episodes I have watched dozens of times since on cable and UA-cam. I also watched again the Hoppy documentary, which is now also on UA-cam. Boyd was a highly underrated actor. Many thanks again to AWOW for allowing us to revisit these landmark films.

Wow. That sounds like a fun marathon. I've always like the Hoppy films but felt that the later ones that you like weren't up to the high standards of the earlier theatricals. However, I love them all!

@@AWordonWesterns Thanks, Rob, but I respectfully must disagree. The last 12 are better photographed, better scripted and better acted, in my humble opinion. I liked them even more because of their noir-ish look and feel, and Hoppy's frequent role as Cowboy Detective, a sort of Frontier Sam Spade minus Bogart's cynicism. The early Hoppy films are lovely to watch and of course I enjoy them terrifically, but they are also more formulaic in comparison to the last 12. In any event, Boyd was a remarkable actor in all of them, and later on, an equally remarkable producer. Too bad that he never tried directing. In any event, many thanks again to you and Team AWOW for allowing us to revisit this extraordinary series.

Perfect timing Rob, and AWOW! I just watched the Hoppy series last month, and this was one of the movies they didn't have. But what a great time that was viewing ol' Bill Boyd and company. 👍👍 10🤠

Great entry, Rob! I always liked the television show, but never saw many of the movies. This was really good. I am a fan of William "Hop-a-long Cassidy" Boyd and George "Gabby" Hayes. This was well-scripted, well-directed, and well-acted. 😊👍👍

Oh, man! I forgot this had the wagon to the back of the head in the high-speed wheelchair scene! One of the most-shocking scenes in all of B-Westerns, as far as I'm concerned.
