- Dark as a Dungeon is an anthem for hard workers everywhere who spend weeks away from family, and in some cases in extreme conditions. The song is also a cautionary tale, “come listen all of you fellas so young and so fine….seek not your fortunes,” warns a knowing Davisson. “It’ll become a habit that’s attached to your soul….there’s just no escaping that life in the hole.” The hole being literal (for some) and for others a metaphor for the endless pursuit of earning money, while spending time away from family and loved ones.
