You have a point there, but I don't personally believe Erik was intentionally trying to kill all the men in the room. I think it was just his powers going haywire with his anger and that it was manslaughter rather than murder. Like, in this telling of Magneto's origin story, it doesn't seem like he knows how to just move things on his own yet. With the fence-pulling, I don't think he was consciously going "I'm going to start pulling at this metal fence" but it was more his powers reacting to his emotions.
I know that in most of his comic origin stories, he's able to pick up small metal things on his own, but I don't think he could in this instance. His powers only manifest when he's angry/distressed and he doesn't really have direct control over what they do. Somewhat like Havoc, but at an even more extreme level.
This young Magneto also comes off to me as a lot gentler than many of the other versions of the character. Like his mother raised him to be obedient, polite, and to keep out of trouble. He also comes off as overly-trusting when it comes to authority figures, which seems odd considering what he's likely witnessed from authority at this point, but I suppose they were going for the biggest contrast possible?
Sorry for the rambling. I've clearly put way too much thought into this, but X-Men: First Class really does present the most atypical version of young Magneto and I've been trying to rationalize their intentions. Again, these are just theories and no one else is right or wrong.
Also, are you sure Erik didn't know Shaw was a mutant? I seriously can't remember.

I saw this movie for the first time last week. It broke my heart when Charles kept saying "I can't feel my legs" over and over. Thankfully, seeing the film hasn't diminished the funny factor of this for me. Still hilarious.
When Erik accidentally paralyzed Charles, in the movie I couldn't stop crying .

Because Shaw had the ability to absorb energy, so if 10 year old Eric did try to kill Shaw, it wouldn't have worked, that's why Charles had to mind block Shaw, so that adult Eric could kill without Shaw defending himself.

Timing is everything. If they had Erik wait until they got Charles to the hospital and then hold a meeting, it would be less dramatic but make more sense.
(Xavier freezes everybody except Magneto, and using telepathy, gets Azazel to come over to warp him to a hospital.)

Has anyone ever realize that for all the Xmen preach about Human-Mutant coexistence, literally every member of the Xmen is a mutant? They never brought on a single human, so their message falls a bit flat.
The entire concept of the Xmen is a team of mutants doing good. Letting a human in is like letting a man play in the WNBA. You might have a point if they didn't collaborate with humans but seeing as they do all the time you just sound nonsensical.

Actually Dr. Moira Mactaggert is affiliated with the X-Men team and she's a non-mutant. There are actual several non-mutant characters that are affiliated with the X-Men team making Charles' theory of co-existence a reality.

Well Spider-Man and Human-Torch have been affiliated with them a bunch.
What hell did Magneto do for the next 40 years? Didn't First Class contradicts the beginning of the 3rd movie and Scott's younger brother is a teen in 62' while Scott's in his 30s in the first two movies and on and on and on...
They probably changed it to where Scott is Alex's brother :P

X-Men first class is a AMAZING film. The friendship/rivalry between Charles and Eric was beautiful and sad! Great action, great story, great characters. I love this movie! It may not be the BEST one in the trilogy but its my favorite! Mutant and Proud!

it wasn't ricocheting lol. he was deflecting them with his ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields, and therefore struck charles in the back by accident.
