When in doubt, toss it out! Less stress goes a long way and your favourites will thank you because they will get more attention! 👍🏼 Be brave! I have a hefty collection and each time I do a toss, I quickly realize I don’t even miss them. Give away, toss away and have the pots you love available for repotting faves!
I have a small collection (especially compared to yours) but I have learned with all plants to seldom start/root little new ones. If you don’t start it, you don’t have these issues later. I also would put a bunch of these little together and give them away or keep but fewer overall pots.
I’m a plant lover but I’m also a minimalist. If a plant doesn’t make me happy or if I don’t enjoy caring for it, then I give it away to someone. I always have lots of plant friends who are happy to get them. And if it looks like it’s near death then I just trash it.
About once a month I pick an area - like my grow light station , very similar to hers, & take all of the pots out. Then I clean out the trays, go through each pot and evaluate. Anything "iffy" goes out. Those are plants that I've tried to save due to mealy bugs or that I neglected and aren't coming back. Anything with mealy bugs I remove the plants, treat, sanitize the containers, new soil, repot and isolate from the others. I have about 100 succulents, 50 cacti and numerous house plants. Yes. It's an addiction and it's real! Many of the ones she has, I would "behead" and repot. Too many small pots can be a pain. I go section by section in the different areas of my house. I reward my labors with new plants!!!
I am new to succulents and already have 100 +/-. I just spent 5 hours yesterday watering, cleaning, transplanting, and propagating my collection. I am at a place where I can give some of my babies to my niece and I will try to sell the rest at our yearly garage sale. I am having so much fun working with and loving my succulents and can't wait for my leaves to give me more. I will identify the plants and put sticks with their names in the pot when selling or giving away the plants. Your videos and newsletters are great. I have learned so much about succulents from you. I have your cards too. I have several plants that are not in your cards and would love to see more. One that I would love to have is the Wandering Jew (Tradescantia zebrina). I was given a 3" cutting of this plant last August and it has filled a 4" X 8" trough type pot. It does grow fast! It doesn't look like a succulent but I was told by the nursery lady, who gave it to me, that is really is a succulent. I love it and all my succulents, thanks to you.
I have put all of mine like those in one larger shallow pot and just let them grow. Give water and light that's it. They grow and with less space and become fuller
Have you thought about consolidating your plants to save time watering? You could take all those babies and put them all in one pot which would save you a lot of time. You could also behead those plants and put all the cuttings in one pot. I have this problem as well. It's hard to give up on plants that are hard to replace. I've been fighting powdery mildew on my plants and know I should toss them but I know once I get them back outside for the spring/summer they’ll recover. Why is it that the plants you love the most seem to have the most issues and the ones you don’t care as much about are always thriving and looking good?😞
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I've been debating on what to do with ALL mh succulents. Many are struggling this winter and I have them in 4 different areas of my home, trying to keep up with their care. So, after watching your video, I too have decided to pitch some and repot some as well. Thanks so much for this!
I bunch mine together. There’s never any succulents that have their own pot. They’re always grouped together. I have one pot where all the “iffy” plants get put together. Sometimes it’s just a cutting that goes in
I also bunch some of mine together. I've beheaded a few and planted them together and they look beautiful. I also found that they thrive better when not alone, esp the smaller echeverias. My older ones now have sprouted long stems with little bell flowers on the end. Look kinda alien!
Bunching them together, hat's a good idea. The only exception to that rule would be if the ones that are just too yummy, for the mealies to resist, toss'm. I threw out all my echeverias. They were a haven for the mealies. I have no more echeverias and therefore, no more mealy bugs.
@@solarwinds- I can’t keep echeveria because they never ever do well. I stick with haworthia, Crassula, kalanchoe, and cacti, mostly. I have a few sedum and senecio tossed in and a gorgeous Rhipsalis. That’s it. No echeveria
Wow... perfect video for today. Not much going on, SO, I'm going to take your advice and do some serious "thinning" and gifting! Thank you for your heartfelt strength and enabling me to take the "plunge." Keep up the great work.
I agree with other posters, consolidate for easy watering. Especially babies, but big ones too. And if the plants are indoors all the time why not use a systemic for the mealies?
I did this just last night. Mealybug and powdery mildew took a toll this winter, so it was really easy to just bin them and move on. I'm going to consolidate what survived the purge when spring gets here. If I can get them into 3-5 pots maybe they will have a better chance next winter.
Far be it for me to tell anyone how to care for their precious babies but if you have room in your yard for a small plastic green house you'll be amazed at how well they do with minimal attention. This is for plants you may otherwise discard. I hardly ever water them but even I do I soak them. Even the leaf babies can survive. I know how hard it is to throw away any succulents. Also try just putting them together in one pot and see how it goes. Thanks for listen to an old succulent lover.
Really enjoy all your videos and help. I just did a clean up too. I sure would like to know where you get thise different size square pots with the dots!! Would love to buy some! Thanks so much 😊
I have a regular elephant bush and a new variegated one. I'm convinced the regular one hates me. It will be beautiful and then bedraggled and sad. I think I may need to put it back in a smaller pot. I love all your videos and appreciate the walk-throughs on your reasoning for things; I'm still rather new to succulent ownership and particularly things like when to repot and how to know what kind of pot (particularly depth and overall size) to put them in... My sister just surprised me with a dozen pots from Etsy and there are 2-3 succulents each and I'm struggling to figure out the best placement for them while I also try to figure out which ones have similar watering needs so I don't end up with a combo pot of perpetually underwatered and overwatered ones!
Please show more! I save every little leaf to give it a chance! I need more inspiration to thin out my collection! I love your videos and articles. Thank you for sharing!😊😊😊

Where do you recommend buying succulents? Like a Home Depot/Menards with more bulk, or a more targeted succulents specifically store like Mountain Crest?
I get a lot from Home Depot, but you really have to watch as they over water them. I always take them out and let them dry out, sometimes that can not save them. I love Etsy and Mountain crest

I had to quit watching the video as I couldn't bare the thought of you throwing plants away. Like other people mentioned, consolidate them into fewer pots.
Without a doubt, get rid of the Dragon Fruit and the mostly dead Opuntia. Don't torture yourself. Phoenix is not kind to Dragon Fruit, too dry. Everyone I know that lives in the desert has a bear of a time growing them. The Opuntia, it's mostly dead, throw it away.

You can reuse your cactus root stock, and put any type of cactus on it. Fun project.
