I may be in the minority but I actually prefer the mysterious, stealthy alien like in the first film as opposed to the “space ants” approach of the sequel. Egg morphing is far more hideous and disturbing than a queen laying a bunch of eggs.
I thought they were going to have an egg morphing scene in this when the Alien dragged away Bjorn's corpse. Another missed opportunity in this film

They did work egg-morphing back into this film. That's that they picked up in the wreckage of the Nostromo at the very beginning.
so which came first, the face hugger or the egg morph?
to me personally a queen laying eggs and a drone using a living body to morph into an egg filled with a face hugger can both co-exist. the perfect organism adapts to its surroundings and uses what it can to ensure survival.
Why is everyone insulting Aliens these days? It doesn't contradict the original film. Aliens is about Space Marines armed with the best weaponry that humanity can buy, & they still got wiped out. Everyone forgets that Aliens was mostly a 4-man survival movie similar to Assault on Precinct 13. It's a horde based horror, instead of a body horror like the original Alien. Both films are masterpieces of horror. Peeps be acting like it's Terminator 1 vs T2 where the sequel is pure action. The Terminator doesn't even kill anyone in T2.
The entire Alien franchise is racist towards aliens everywhere and paints them in a bad picture. It’s time to end xenophobia! 👀👀 😂

The army of skittering face huggers that were shown in the trailer doesn’t convey how creepy and disturbing that looks and sounds like when you see it in the theater. My skin crawled. It was so good.
Just got back from the IMAX. Loved it.
The last 15 minutes are insane in a good way for me IMO. Very graphic and disturbing.
I would definitely put this in the top 3 alien movies.
Xeno and face huggers have never been/looked this good.
I liked it a lot for the most part. The soundtrack was surprisingly awesome. It really added to it. The Andy character was a lot more complex than I expected. The old character really worked for me too. Glad you liked it! I've been waiting for your review since I got home last night!
Just returned from theater....I think this is 80 mil. well spent. Those space shots are beautiful in Imax, sound as well. It is clear that Fede has passion for this franchise.
I knew he was gonna like this movie, because he was smiling at the beginning of the video. Mr. h never fails me.

he’s easily pleased by mediocre films. He’s putting it all on. I urge people to watch it again and then they will see how poor this movie is. they will start seeing it all fall apart. every other reviewer on youtube are more truthful about this film.

Was so underwhelmed by the lack of the scorched xeno. Was hoping to have had more alien action especially from what the trailers had shown. Absolutely loved Andy's character he was a Stella performance. The ending was completely huh ha ha accepted it but it left me thinking would the scorched xeno had been a better ending chasing her around at the end
Totally agree with this…. We got little xeno…. Especially the chest buster….. Andy was a good addition and the character development was solid
This is one of my main complaints and it's like people who are infinitely praising this are completely ignoring it. For an Alien movie the Xenomorphs are barely in it and when they are they're mostly just standing around watching.
He should have been the only Alien in the movie, slowly hunting the characters instead of doing the Prometheus stuff

From the opening with the silence of space, and then the ship computers booting up in a way reminiscent of the original Alien, I was all in.
I felt it was a love letter to fans and have already scheduled my second viewing, so glad I saw it on imax.

I've been so curious of your thoughts because I've been on the hype train with you on this one. I also loved it. I admit I went in REALLY wanting to like it and it was very very easy to enjoy as an Alien fan. It was just a great time. I guess not for everyone? But it totally worked for me.

Loved the first half, but as soon as a certain CGI character shows up, the movie starts to go downhill. Andy was the best character, and that last third was really bad. Third best? Sure, but Alien and Aliens are better by a mile.
I think Alien 3 is a better film than Romulus, the acting was far better and the characters were well written, the only thing that lets Alien 3 down for me is some of the effects work.

I’m sharing the opinion of Andre from midnights edge, I drove 80 miles round trip to go watch this and it wasn’t worth it. I said before that it seemed to be a love letter to Ridley Scott but it was more like a reach around to himself as he was a producer. I wanted a straight alien movie like Aliens, I was bored through the Blade Runneresk opening, and with the exception of Andy I hated all the characters and desperately wanted them to die. Visually I thought it was amazing but the story was wasted on unlikable characters with no redeeming qualities and gratifying Ridley Scott with call backs to what I think polluted the alien franchise, that being Prometheus and Covenant. And while not great I love the alien predator movies but this was just ass and not worth the trip.
Alien Romulus is just a high-budgeted fan film. May as well have been released free to stream on UA-cam.

@@jainee4507 I really don’t know if it’s because Ridley Scott was involved and he was micromanaging the director or if Alvarez has a hard on for Scott but I think it could have been great. Like I said aside from the engineer alien which I despised all the others were perfect but the characters here were so unlikable it ruined everything. In Alien the crew was cool you were invested and in Aliens you got to feel for the marines, loath Burke, and live newt so it was a good balance where watching was a great experience. In this film I just wanted them all to die as quickly and painfully as possible because it felt like they were nerfing the xenomorph some how. Rook looked a little off but he and Andy were probably the best characters
@@TheRetroManRandySavage honestly I’m disappointed because I was really looking forward to it, I saw aliens in the theaters as a kid and it blew me away I’ve seen all the other alien and predator vs alien movies in the theater but none hit like aliens I wanted something similar instead I got something worse than alien 3 where they break the news that Newt and Hicks are dead. But that’s just my opinion

Should've called it Alien: Remember. Great production, but the story and script was bad, felt like an Alien Greatest Hits album sung by a cover band.
What was bad about it ?
Characters acted reasonably smart in the situation they found themselves in.

I can’t fault the actors they did a great job , the set pieces were fantastic. The main xenos were creepy and slow and then fast when necessary. That corridor scene were rain came back there was a scene with the xeno standing over Andy . A really controlled,poised stance - they were great but it all detracted from them to shoehorn other things in like that hybrid . Ah well
It’s a really good movie as a succession to Alien. If you just watch Alien, then watch this it is great! I agree with you in that it is probably the third best film of the series. I really like the nods/connections to the other films and all were very subtle (except for 1 on top of a lift - which brought a smile to my face but felt a bit awkward/forced/out of place).
Feels good watching you be this happy about the film, been following you since Covenant and i'm excited to see it this Saturday

This was the only review I’ve wanted & plan on watching before I go see it tomorrow.
Just got out of the theater and I really loved it.
These films always start out with a crew in space and I’ve always wondered “what the hell made these people embark on this trip in the first place? I would love to see their lives and the events on their home planet that led up to them being in outer space in the first place.” And that’s exactly what we got! Loved the MC and think she did a great job. The new alien had me tripping out.
The only thing I’m confused about (besides franchise timeline and other things like how the alien got stuck in a space rock or how they were able to farm and harvest facehuggers, etc) is how are they able to make their trip to the new planet? In the beginning they said they need to stop there to steal tech to make the trip in deep space, but I don’t ever remember seeing them do anything of the sort. And wasn’t their escape ship the exact same ship they arrived in? So aren’t they in the exact same situation that they were in the beginning? Maybe you can explain the confusion to me.

We're probably never getting a sequel to Covenant from Ridley Scott, but I like how Romulus bridged the gap from Prometheus to ALIEN.

Ridley Scott comes from the same region of England as me, it's very working class, old school, no nonsense, even more so when he was a boy.
Even though the offspring incorporates plenty of Giger's aesthetic into the design, even down to his original chestburster.

@@non.local.quantum.circuit the engineer design is in the pyramid concept stuff Giger did. The inner jaw/Tongue was the exact same as his design and puppet he was building for the chestburster in the first film, before they went with the other puppet that was made, much to his chagrin.
You can complain all you want, but it was the most Giger thing to show up since anything in the original. My problems with this move stem from weird call back lines, and some plot structure issues. Could have done with less memberberries via said lines, and the Ash/Rook business, really enjoyed otherwise.

the space, planet, and planet rings were so unexpectedly amazing. it looked amazing in IMAX. the sound was booming and rhudding like you were there!

I’m glad it got your fan approval. I saw it in IMAX yesterday. Fully enjoyed this and loved the lore building and Easter eggs. It makes you rethink some of the other films. I loved all of the practical effects!!! To me that’s amazing in its own right. I want more from this director and team. Easily top 3!
We needed the ending with either big chap or a drone ,morphing into a praetorian and then into a queen ending. We got something we already seen pretty much. Too many " what were they thinking moments" made me walk out thinking it was a let down.Still cool to get another alien movie , but feel they need someone else to try and get the right ideas.Alien isolation creators had them aswell as the many alien book/comic writers.

I love both the first two Alien movies the same. I think it is because Aliens continues the story of Alien so seamlessly it feels like one giant movie to me, same with Terminator and T2. Just watched Romulus tonight and loved it. I just wish there was a death scene in the floating acid and I wish we could have seen the Big chap in action.
Maybe one too many member berries but overall it's a great watch. Mental that they managed to basically cross prometheus with alien resurrection and come out with a good movie.
Hah yeah it's an interesting mix of elements that somehow managed to feel fresh and well done

I mostly agree I enjoyed it. The CG for a cameo was obnoxious. The third act was ... Eh... But over all enjoyed it. I thought the performances were all good though I agree the performance for Andy was a standout. I thought the younger cast would be obnoxious but I liked them all.
I listened to the score today and it has a huge Jerry Goldsmith 70's vibe
I think this is the first movie since Aliens that fits into the series. I liked Alien3, Alien Resurrection as standalone movies, the Prometheus / Covenant duology is okay as a separate story, but Romulus is the first that actually properly provides Alien/Aliens/40th anniversary short vibes/atmosphere. This movie had great tech depiction, awesome sound effects. The first half was magnificent, the second half was okay. I personally loved it, easily a 8/10 for me. Would like to see a director's edition.
Right off the bat, I knew this movie was going to be good from your tone within the first few seconds of the video. You’ve made some great calls on movies and shows. So we will be seeing Alien on Monday.
I just think that the fan service was a bit out of place sometimes, but i really enjoyed the movie. When THAT happened at the end, it got me so bad, I loved it

I just think the actual xenomorphs weren't used as much. But the facehuggers were amazing and terrifying! Some scenes were actually scary. I'm fairly desensitised since I watch lots of horrors, but this managed to scare me at times. The best character is definitely Andy. The finale was ok. I didn't mind it and it actually makes sense. I just hope that in future movies the xenomorphs will still be the main focus, even though what is shown at the end of the film is actually cool and I don't mind being maybe better developed and shown again in other contexts
The genuine happiness in your voice gives me the info I need about this movie. I think I will indeed be going and seeing it.
Even tho I do believe this film was a greatest hits of all other films combined and really enjoyed it, I do think that this was a film to prove Fede can exist in the alien space for film making and now that he has proven himself I hope he explores a sequel and goes all out.

People often criticize sequels and prequels for either sticking too closely to the original or diverging too much from it, rarely feeling satisfied. However, it's worth noting that even the first 'Alien' initially received mixed reviews. Alien: Romulus is a solid addition to the franchise, deserving an 8 out of 10, mainly due to some questionable CGI and a few unnecessary callback tropes. Despite these issues, the practical effects were outstanding, and the two leads delivered excellent performances, especially Andy, the artificial person. The story was solid, and the acting was top-notch, placing it high in the franchise's rankings, just behind 'Alien' and 'Aliens,' making it a fitting close to what could be seen as a near-perfect trilogy.

As a hardcore Alien fan, I thought it was enjoyable and a solid addition to the universe. I personally liked the ending because I enjoyed the pathogen story thread from Prometheus/Covenant but I understand that won't be for everyone especially if they did not like either of those movies.
I might need another watch. Enjoyed the movie, have a few gripes here and there, but is it my 3rd favorite Alien movie in the series? I’m juggling between this and Alien 3, giving Alien 3 the edge for now.
I'd honestly put it on the same level as ALIEN Resurrection or Prometheus. I'm glad H enjoyed it but It definitely is relying on memberberries to the first two films and Isolation to hide the bad writing.
The sound design alone is worth the price of admission!
I liked everything up to the third act. I've seen this already in Alien Resurrection which wasn't that good in the first place. I would prefer to make original Xenomorph a real threat again instead of human-alien hybrid. Also I was hoping this movie to remove some of the Prometheus bullshit but I don't think it did (need to watch Romulus once more I guess). Besides that I had a good time overall.I loved the setpiecies and use of miniatures, as you said. You could really smell the rust and metal of those dirty ship interiors. I hope this will get extended cut as I would love to spend some more time with some of the characters.
I just got back and i enjoyed the first two thirds. The last act is very derivative of a previous film in the series. I think thats the way to describe it without spoiling.
Was it necessary to make a Prometheus connection in a sci-fi horror movie that started out in such an original way? Wouldn't the story have been perfect if it had tied directly into the movie Aliens with a Xenomorph Queen instead of the zombified human species spawned by the pathogenic liquid? For example, if that surviving ship returned to the colony and the entire crew died... So if the idea of creating mutated life forms on habitable planets with the help of this pathogenic liquid didn't come from Ridley, I don't know anything either. I wish the movie had focused on just one creature, the Alien.
Don't I have things to love? Of course there is. The technological inspirations of the first two films, the atmosphere of Alien Isolation, the great music and the scariness of the phallic objects... These are very successful. And of course, the tension created by the facehuggers in the first half is enormous. It was a nice experience to see these creatures starring in an Alien movie for the first time.
Coming to the end, Ridley Scott, get away from this Alien series. Let people have an original...

This is the happiest I've seen Mr. H in a long time. This movie really was a lot of fun and I agree with it being the 3rd best.
Mate I am 100% with you and completely agree with everything you said. I loved the cinematics of it all it Felt like an alien movie from the second it started, the entire world setting is perfect. My one gripe that isn't just with this movie is how quick the turn around is from face hugged to fully grown xeno is now.
But yeah other than that Everything you said is spot on 👍.
Ok. But how did the face huggers get on the ship???? Where did they come from? Designed by the scientists? Does anyone know?
One gripe i have is the final encounter..... Should have been an Ultramorph, i was a bit iffy about what appeared and being a hardcore alien fan it should have been another form of xenomorph. Keep it true to the aliens universe.
Damn H usually keeps it honest, so I believe him! But I can’t agree, Longlegs, Trap, now Romulus were ALL disappointing to ME! I wanted to love them, but they all seem mid! I’m just waiting for Art at this point!
He's been wrong on a lot of movies lately. Longlegs was hilariously bad with the most nonsensical writing and plot and this film was like a studio mandated The Force Awakens with no substance. Alien Romulus is hollow.
Agree with this review. I liked the movie, but, admittedly, the last sequence muddied the progress of the film a bit. Doesn’t really detract too much from the film overall though. It at least was a movie that returned to the winning formula of the first two.
Can't wait for a 4k release so I can really appreciate the practical effects.
Loved this film, hated one big aspect of it (which gets worse the more I think about it), but still loved it overall. It does feel like a real Alien movie, with serious suspense and horror. It keeps you hooked in. Well thought out and made by someone who obviously loves the franchise and paid close attention. Go and see it. If you are an alien fan, you'll want to see it more than once.

It started off strong … connected the most with the Android character…. Then it tapered off … no human character was memorable… and the ending was 🤮…. it was unnecessary - and to me it was a make or break moment in the film.. and unfortunately it pointed the needle slightly towards breaking imo - 6/10 I would rank it above resurrection and I like resurrection
After having seen Alien Romulus now I will give it a solid 8/10 it’s very entertaining but not perfect Alien & Aliens still rule the roost but it’s one of the better more recent efforts I think that Fede Alvarez has done a really good job with this film. There are plenty of references to the other Alien films throughout including sounds from the originals too for the fans too I really enjoyed it! 😉👍

Movie is ok, but the problem is that it is the same idea over and over again. Why not to break alien movie, not only eggs or facehugger in space or in lost ship on a planet. It gets boring
This movie was incredible. It's nice to leave the movie theater happy, it feels like it's been a long time since that happened
I absolutely loved it… rollercoaster thrill ride from start to finish… I put it right up there with the first 2 films. I also see myself rewatching this quite frequently for years to come… definitely has that rewatch ability factor
And what happened to the alien that was trapped on their spaceship? I was sure that would come into play when they got back on board ...did I miss something?
The ending let me down as a fan but overall great movie! Wish they had linked it close to aliens so we could see how it ties in.

Good movie... my favorite is still aliens. This is my 3rd favorite one too.
I enjoyed the movie I agree about the 3rd act I didn`t think it was up to par with the rest of the Film but that didn`t spoil the film for me. The sets I thought were amazing when you see The Jackson Star colony at the start, a thriving and bustling community it makes Hadley`s Hope in Aliens all the more shocking I also thought Andy was the lynchpin to the story as it showed what humans thought of and how they treated Synthetics but ultimately have to rely on them. I hope Fede gets a chance to make another in the Franchise but of course with Colonial Marines

I personally think that the Offspring was a mistake Aesthetically.... i think that we should have got something more Xenomorph related... as in NOT a Engineer like Face
Some of the unused Fifield concepts from Prometheus or a Face like Eldon from the Fire and Stone Comics.... but i get why we got what we did as to me this seems a Missing Link to how you can Genetically get from the Planet 4 Engineers or a Human to the LV-223 Engineers.
However another bug for me is WHY was Kay not affected?
If i was Alvarez i would have reused the Gibson Alien 3 Body Burster.. where Kays Skeletal Structure would begin to MOLT into a Exoskeleton.
Well even like what we got in the Movie but with a different Head.. but this Monster being Kay herself where she shreads her Skin... like a Molting Spider.... to reveal her becoming a Hybrid.
So just like the Gibson Alien 3 but LESS Xenomorph... i feel this would have worked better.
So i seen a couple reviews including your first two vids on it and i was super excited man. I was sooo ready. I eas impressed by the set design and the actual xenomorph looked incredible i must say. The android was played brilliantly and was a good choice of actor i think. Rain was a good actor and was definitely someone i was routing for. There was a couple jump scares which was good to get and a few eary moments of oh shit lol😅. But it wasn't what i expected as a whole in a good way actually. I dont want to give away spoilers but some choices were made by who came up with it which yes it was unsettling but im not sure it was the right choice for an alien movie that really goes back to the basics even though they got so much right. I came out of the cinema thinking hmmm im not sure about that instead of wowww i loved it. Its got nothing on Alien or Aliens
Thank God or whatever it really seems to be the third best Alien Film after almost four decades.

As a fan of the alien films for nearly 35 years this was a great return to form, perfect no, one cgi misfire but overall a strong entry into the series

Seemed good as this movie has a lot going for it, especially the atmosphere look and feel of the movie. It’s also very tense.
I will say nods to previous films are nice, but sometimes yes, can be blatantly cringe feeling more like a mishmash of unnecessary additions than necessary homages.
Not as bad a the last Jurassic Park though…
The finale is interesting and I won’t mention anything more, but I do feel like the Alien franchise needs to distance itself from Prometheus and Covenant as those movies had interesting concepts with terrible nonsensical executions.
(Also Resurrection even though that film is quite entertaining).

Thanks guys. I had a bit of an "episode" but after an hour or two after after posting this I turned a corner, I thought to myself no I will tough it out, and go and watch it. Get my mind off things. I've just finished the film. Initial thoughts the first three quarters were solid, love the lore and references but the final act was a let down for me. Hopefully with repeated viewings I appreciate it more. Everyone I spoke to felt the same. I still prefer Prometheus and Covenant unashamedly I realise that's a hot take. 😂
