Cut-back deployment sends 'shocking terrible' indictment of Australia’s defence unpreparedness

- The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the cutback of Australia’s military contribution to the world’s largest maritime drill has revealed just how “unbelievable” unprepared our Defence Force is.
The Albanese government is dramatically scaling back Australia's participation in the biennial RIMPAC war games in the waters off Hawaii, as the nation faces a capability crisis following years of under-investment in defence.
The ADF has sent just 320 personnel, a single warship and just one aircraft to America's biggest military exercise, a contingent that's 80 per cent smaller than what we sent last time in 2022.
“This is a shocking, terrible, unbelievable indictment of Australia’s defence unpreparedness,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“And the government plans to do absolutely nothing about our capability in the next ten years.”

As a retired soldier I can say that’s not entirely true. They are keenly interested in pork barrelling using defence funding, just so long as defence doesn’t actually benefit.

Successive governments have been faffing about with defence for decades. If Australia had of just stuck with the Japanese Soryu Class submarines back in 2014, we would likely have 6 boats in the water right now. This wouldn't preclude Australia from moving towards nuclear powered submarines in the future. However, it would offer us one of the world's quietest and most lethal diesel-electric submarine fleets in the meantime. Considering the Soryu boats only cost $600M a piece, they were an absolute bargain.
We moved from fleet attack to strategic deterrent + fleet attack. For that we need nuclear range, VLS and tomahawk missiles.

In the meantime, we could have seen a Collins replacement plus a few more hulls in the water right now, with 50% of them being made in Adelaide. No doubt, pursuing nuclear, VLS, tomahawk capabilities is a prudent move but what are we going to do over the next 10-20 years?

Convenient there’s no mention that the “neglect” occurred under a decade of LNP stewardship, where we saw announcement after announcement but nothing really materialised.
Now the ADF is down on manpower, maintaining a fleet of legacy vehicles on life support or has new toys in such low, revised numbers they’re highly unlikely to make any difference in a modern contemporary conflict.
The public is largely unaware of what is happening in defence which is why our governments get away with this nonsense.

When the ADF are sitting in Barracks painting white rocks white and the Navy are tied up to the Wharves painting ships French Gray, people leave the service. You loose years of experience and are left with untrained basic recruits. The Airforce are fine, they spend all their time flying Foresking and the rest of his Clowns around the world on joy flights.

An exercise is not really a deployment. In the military a deployment usually refers to operations, not training.
Well if we lack capability then, holding ships back for actual operations as opposed to exercise makes sense - as does saving the money to put into the programs to build capability. It's not like we aren't already interoperable with the USN - and all the other navies we are most likely to work with are USN interoperable or working to get there which essentially means we are itneroperable with pretty much every one that it makes sense to interoprate with.
Yes we should still be attending exercises to learn and to allow us to exercise any niche capability we have in context - but we don't need to send an entire desron to do that.
And lets be honest the underinvestment isn't a labout/liberal issue - both parties have underinvested. It's not like ships a short lead time.
