    Next time when you gonna try to clean up those putty beads try to use an empty silicone or putty/glue cilindrical plastic container cartridge like the one you have the black putty/glue in. When empty cut the open back off under an angle to reach into corners and bend the radius to what you need. put it on the soft putty bead in the corner and push it firm against the deck and bow spread in the corner while maintaining the radius. Do it in a way that the the sides of the cartridge tube next to the radius are flat against the side of the bowspread and the deck. You want and move it forward with the open end to the front. all excess putty will go into the empty container and the pieces of container that are flat against the deck and bowspread will leave a clean surface. the putty will be in the perfect radius in the corner. It does cost you a lot of putty that will go into the bin but makes perfect beads in the corners. Used it like that everywere in the house. You can make every radius you want and in two and three way corners you just go to a few mm from the end, lick a finger and use the top of the fingernail to also make the corner connection neath.

    Why not take the gypsy off Poem. Get it machined if necessary to fit the Geordie capstain. You them use the 300 foot chain currently on poem and use the gypsy you had on geordie to fit on poem and eventually purchase rode or chain as necessary

      the very thing I was going to suggest.
      If Peter has so much chain already in hand, why buy more??
      Just find the right size gypsy and call it good.
      I find it curious that he didn't mention this idea himself.

    Perhaps it’s just me not understanding wooden boat building and I don’t, but when Peter says when i do this properly applies to nearly every aspect of the build of Geordie can’t you do it properly now so you don’t have to do it again in the future as I say I am no expert but surely time & money are saved by doing it right first time, but carry on Peter love the work and your skills.

    • @ianc4901
      @ianc4901 29 днів тому

      I think the problem is he is always short of time and money, in order to 'do it properly' it would require much more time and effort than he has right now, this is just one of 3 boats he is maintaining.
      I have been saying for some time that the boat he was gifted (Poem) is too much of a distraction and he should sell it to raise cash and free up his time. If he concentrated on Geordie he could have got a lot more done over the past couple of years and although it still wouldn't be finished it wouldn't be far off. As it is he is a couple of years away from following his dream of 'doing some extensive cruising some day' but in reality that date will never arrive when he is trying to maintain 3 wooden boats and he keeps covering over jobs that he intends to do properly some time.
      They are selling the boat shed this summer and Peter mentioned a bigger plan which they intended to use the money for, that sounds like some kind of permanent base or location so maybe the cruising idea is off the table ? I think things are changing now that he is in a relationship so maybe he is starting to develop other ideas, he certainly seems to do less work on the boat now that he is no longer single.

    Maybe this has been said but that “Bondo” CSM is made for polyester, it has an ester-soluble binder that holds the strands together then dissolves in the layup and saturates nicely. It does not dissolve in epoxy. Epoxy CSM has the strands sewn together with threads.

    I’ll be pulling up anchor and visiting your area soon. With the many bolts you had to install, have you considered using an impact driver with a socket attachment. I’ve been using one now for several years and it does speed the installation process. I use the impact driver till I’m about to snug the bolt, then use a hand ratchet for the final tightening. Still miss the customary introduction. Cheers!!

    What type of paint did you use on the deck?
    Buy a different Gypsy.
    Wires going through deck could go through a bit of plastic pipe or non rot metal.. the end is higher than deck level that's gooed in place.. use hole cutter but don't cut all the way through and drill smaller hole, the reason to stop pipe falling through.
    I still don't understand why people don't use a guard on the angle grinder.
    Any suggestions on fibreglassing oiled larch T&G deck that now has self adhesive thick plastic stuck to it?
    I really don't want to coat it with ply that rots.
    I did think of using actual canvas adhered to the plastic with spray adhesive and acrylic paint.. or oil gloss.
    Alternatively plastic canvas (usually printed on smooth side with eyelets) used for advertising.

    Proud bolt heads on the bowsprit? Installing the windlass right after applying Sika? Why not preinstall the whole thing dry, varnish the holes just like rest perfectly? Oh my goodness... A tinkerer. Hope no one ever will buy your boats. My points are not about the beauty or the perfect historical correct method, they are just about maintaining the boat in the way with most longevity. I do also work with glass and EP on my wooden boat. But I'd never do such work in a way which lasts a season or max two.

  • @andrebauer576
    @andrebauer576 28 днів тому

    Are you seriously mounting the mahogany below deck dry and with galvanized bolts? You're doing good work, but in the details you're often botching. Yes, the white galvanised can be easily recognised even in the video, stainless is silver. If you think they are below deck and nothing will harm them, you're completely wrong. Just look at the wooden beams which are black already. Haven't seen how you mount the deck yet. But the plywood is also no good choice and you'll be sorry soon not to have tapered it to the old deck. It's going to leak very soon. The paint is smeared on in a thickness good for car bottom protection. The foot rail could have been separated by the cleats instead of joining the parts face to face. With Sikaflex this is no valuable connection at all and they should sit with their whole lower face in Sika. Boatbuilding wise a complete fail in all aspects.
