The Jaunt is incredible. I've hardly ever read something where the backstory, especially in a short story, is so utterly atmospheric and beguiling. When it switched back to the main action I was jolted, then that damn ending.......
Longer than you think...
This one stays with me for days every time I read it.
Has anyone ever noticed that most Stephen King short story collections have night involved in their title. Night shift, nightmares and dreamscapes, four past midnight, just after sunset, full dark no stars, and the bazaar of bad dreams.
I imagine it’s because Stephen King wanted readers to have a short story to read before falling asleep.
I have noticed and it's cool, right? An entire book of darkness can be draining but a quick dark short story can be haunting and stick with you. The Man Who Loved Flowers from Night Shift taught me that. I think it's only two and a half pages and I have never forgotten it.
@@vincentlorusso689That’s such a good story
Oh yeah! Was waiting for “The Mist” that’s one of my favorites too, a cassette tape in Binural sound was very creepy! The product placement in that drama was great!
I’ve never actually listened to an audio book. Maybe that should be my first. Thanks!
@@jimmymango Your missing out. Tons of story telling channels like Creepypasta and the like too. Full cast audio drama's are even cooler. Might want to check out all the classic radio series as well. There are literally dozens of great ones. Twilight Zone, Lights Out, Mystery Theatre etc.
Dolan’s Cadillac is one of my favorite ever short stories! Love how methodical it is.
The Langoliers is my favorite story I’ve read from Stephen King so far. Total page turner. 🤘🏼🧔🏻
Same here man! I read it on a road trip and couldn't put it down. The movie/tv special/whatever was actually pretty good and I was pleasantly surprised.
Grey Matter not even on the list?! I love hearing everyone's top picks, he's written so much that everyone's favorites are all over the place
Another great story from Night Shift!
It has such a great 'Bangor/Brewer-in-the-middle-of-a-blizzard' vibe to it...and that ending...😱
I have so much love for King's short Sci-fi stuff.
Nice list! Was a bit disappointed that The Last Rung on the Ladder from Night Shift didn't make it. Beautiful writing and one of my favorite stories ever.
The Jaunt scared the shit out of me when I was a few years younger. My father told me about it and I sat there the whole night, imagining how that trip would’ve looked. Not “scary” in the traditional way, but because I could relate really well to the main character, this story made me think so much.
Loved the video! I am currently reading Wizard and Glass right now and I know it is your favorite King book so I am definitely excited for this read and I am thoroughly enjoying it right now. Can't wait to watch more of your spoiler talk and multiverse videos once I finish up the Dark Tower series
Some of these I’d never heard of! Thanks for sharing
Love your channel and content. As a constant reader myself I enjoy listening to your take on Kings works. Would love to see a video souly about The Man in Black! How many books he appears in and different names he goes by. Keep the videos coming!
Man I envy you. You have almost all of King's books. Awesome.
Have watched loads of your videos and only realised I wasn't subscribed this morning! 🤦 Love the King content. Deserve a lot more subs
Good to see you back!
Awesome vid as always jimmy
The Jaunt! I read this just once a long time ago..but I remember chills going down my spine when I read it and the same feeling when I heard about it now..also this video made me realize I have quite a few of his short story collections to get through..thank you!
Great video love this topic on short stories
Goddamn! even the stories in the end of the list (the last ranking stories) you've liked and said pretty intresting.
Nice video, bro.
Really enjoyed watching your ranking of the novels and now also this video! :-)
Was worried when The Jaunt wasn't getting mentioned, glad to see it so high. One of those stories that just really creeped me out when I read it.
And here I am again. Don't know whether my list would be ranked the same, but it's been so long since I've read most of these that now I want to read them again. Thanks for this....
This is pretty awesome that you read this much Stephen King. I want to read more for sure. I think reading is one of the healthiest things for our minds.
Thank you for adding Battleground. it is me favourite short story from me favourite collection of short stories. Like you, I am also a mega fan of the story The Raft.
Glad to see Afterlife where it was, a story I think about at least once a month. Brilliant!
Yes! So happy to see The Langoliers so high on someone else's list. Easily one of my favorite novellas of King's, right up there with Dolan's Cadillac
I'll say it again, you have good taste, I'm really happy I found your channel :)
Four Past Midnight was my first Stephen King book. I got it from my parents for my 13th birthday after nagging about it for weeks. I just loved it! ❤ The Langoliers were my favourite. I still to this day read everything this man writes. I really hope that all the short stories he has already written that aren't already released in books gets collected in books in the future. It would be such a treat with some short stories I might have missed.
I just finished The Mist today and loved it, was hoping it would make your top 50 but I didn't know how it'd compare to his others as its the only short I've read from King. When you got down to the top 5 I thought it probably won't make the list, loved to see it got top spot! :D
I was obsessed with Mercedes cars after reading 'Mrs Todd's Shortcut' as a teen- still one of my favourite Stephen King stories along with 'The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet'.
Absolutely LOVE that Mrs Todd, The Jaunt, The Raft and Survivor Type made the list from Skeleton Crew! Also - Dolan's Cadillac...great choice!! And I've said for many many years that The Mist is my absolute favorite thing Stephen King has written. Great list!!!
Thank you for another great video, i found a few stories i hadn't read yet but are now on my amazon wishlist. I have not read The Mist but seen the movie so i am interested on how it varies . The movie ending was so gut-renching and was good for a lot of discussion .And i love Storm of the Century i think for me the main character is one i liked the most .Happy Holidays and blessings to you and your family .( i am hoping or asking if you have or are going to post a video on your top reads from other authors )
Really enjoyed this rundown Jimmy! A lot of nostalgia from reading these stories for the first time. I'm often reminded how King's short stories/novellas pack such power and depth - often as much as his longer novels do. Looking forward to revisiting many from your list. Thanks a ton for sharing 👊🙏
Thanks Justin! 🍻
Great video and perfect synopses for the new reader and reminder if it’s been a while since reading the story. Sad not to se Gramma from Skeleton Crew included. That one stuck with me for decades! 😳
I really wanted that video after the novel ranking 😅. It is great 👌
Another good list. And no worries about The Dark Half - it would barely crack my own top 50 list. :) I love that you're a fan of Hearts in Atlantis. It's a great tome overall, and I believe its title story might be the greatest thing King's ever written.
Love so many of these short stories. Special mention to the film adaptation of Quitters Inc. from the Night Shift collection. This appears as the first segment in the movie "Cat's Eye". James Woods is great in this.
I first read "Battleground" when I was in college. I had a semester when all my classwork was in-class and one weekend I didn't have to work so I grabbed "Night Shift" from the school library that Friday and read through most of it on three successive evenings and "Battleground" was one of the stories that really, really grabbed me!
So excited to see Beachworld on here. 🥳 Great bedtime audio story to fall asleep to.
The Mist was a great choice for #1. Glad you included The Jaunt in your top ten. It is one of my faves.
Very good choices. You’ve inspired me to read Hearts in Atlantis which is one i’ve missed
Great video! I’ve just started reading Stephen King’s stuff from the beginning after having only read Rose Madder and Riding the Bullet (which really stuck with me) when they came out. I’m currently about to finish Night Shift…. So many fun stories! Looking forward to getting to the other collections.
Night Shift was one of my favorite reads ever, hope you enjoying it
Awesome! Was really hoping to see Breathing Method a little higher as I feel it often doesn't get enough love. Great video, though.
I was surprised you didn’t add The Library Policeman or The Kindle. Four Past Midnight is my favorite short story collection and TLP was a great horror story. The kindle has an important tie in with The Dark Tower series and I thought that would be enough to get on the list.
Surprised to not see The Life Of Chuck from if it bleeds. Loved that one
"One for the Road" in Night Shift. I love "Salem's Lot", and this is such an entertaining follow-up to that story!🧛
Thanks for mentioning it! 🥀
I loved your list of his best novels. Now this. Great video dude. You’re very well spoken.
I have to say that his best short story is the mist. That story just blew me away and messed me up lol.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 🍻
Love the vids!
I love how even the top 40 are still liked
hearts in atlantis is hands down by favorite book of all time. legit didn't even realize it was a collection of short stories/novellas until just now--that's how engaging of a read it was for me.
Love Heats in Atlantis, the movie was pretty good too.
Very much agree with the top of your list. Love hearing The Langoliers and Hearts in Atlantis getting some love, those are my two favorite King novellas. Hope one day to see an adaptation of the novella of Hearts in Atlantis though not sure what they could call it lol
There is already a film of the first part starring Sir Anthony Hopkins...its not too bad for a King adaptation
Loved "The Jaunt" and "Survivor type." Sad not to see "Crouch end" though. Very lovecraftian and dark. Great list though. Subscribed.
"The Jaunt" is the one that has had me periodically thinking about it the most over the last couple decades. I was disappointed to not see my other two favorites on your list. I'm partial to "Chattery Teeth" and "The End of the Whole Mess". "The Mist" and "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" are, IMHO the best movie adaptions of Stephen King's works. "The Dark Tower" movie was a travesty beyond measure.
End of the Whole Mess is so good!
Chattery Teeth - has never left me.
The jaunt fucked me up. I always think if that was my kid who did that, jesus christ.
You forgot Dolores Claiborne, Misery
Those are novels
Dolan’s Cadillac is my favorite revenge tale and probably my favorite King short! That and The Langoliers are both in my top 5 too!!
Great video! Greetings from Costa Rica
I have these books but haven’t gotten around to reading them. I will be looking for the Stand and Salem’s Lot shorts. Thanks
The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet is my favorite King novella, but The Myst is a close second. The Jaunt is easily my favorite short story.
I feel like you'd be awesome to have a beer with. Great video as usual
You’d be right! 🍻
Greetings from Rome, Italy! I was looking for this kind of video on short stories and novellas. I'm very much interested in getting Night Shift and Different Seasons. Btw, I'm currently following your guide on reading the DT series, the expandable reading guide (not every book, but some books in that order you suggested)!
That’s great to hear! Thanks!
Great list and agree The Mist is #1. Thanks for doing this. Shame that the Library Policeman from Four Past Midnight didn't make the list.

Apt Pupil was amazing! I'm gonna pick up Skeleton Crew next, the stories in there seem right up my alley. I've never read 1408 but the movie is one of my faves for horror.
What did you think of the movie?
I actually thought the Mist story had a darker ending than the movie. The movie implied the world was saved, whereas the book implied the world ended.
This is very true. The thing with the movie though was the events that happened right before we found out it was saved.
Jerusalem’s lot will always be my favorite short story
I am from Denmark and I did my A-levels English exam in Stephen King's "The Man Who Loved Flowers" and I failed miserably. Maybe now is the time to forgive and get into Stephen's short stories. 😁
I don't know if you know but The Raft was in Creepshow 2. Keep up the good work brother
I let out such a cheer when I heard The Langoliers get into the top 3!
yessss lets go
Loved Blockade Billy
Ahhh yes agreed with those top picks!!!
Full Dark, No Stars is def my favourite short stories of his, one by one
Hearts In Atlantis is my all time favorite Stephen King book.
After watching I see I only read Nightshift, Skeleton Crew, Different Seasons, and possibly Nightmares and Dreamscapes. Amazing how much I remember 30 years later. Nightshift 💕💕💕 Also Four Past Midnight! Langoliers and the Mist for sure. No Gray Matter???
The road virus heads north is my favorite short story of King.
I forgot he wrote Apt pupil,! Love that story. Movies very good too!
The Jaunt and Apt Pupil need to be hire. 1 and 2 fantastic list!
Sundog is one of my favourite shorts...favourite novella is The Long Walk...Rose Madder or Insomnia my favourite novels
The Jaunt would be my number 1. Glad to see it made top 10
This list took me back, I haven't read some of these in decades! I'm trying to remember one story that I'm 80% sure was in a Stephen King short story collection- a husband and wife road tripping stop at a diner, and the husband disappears. The diner staff and local cops treat her like she's crazy but it turns out her husband was being held captive. Does this ring any bells?
One of m'y favorite short story of Stephen King is "i know what you need" from night shift
Can’t believe the long walk is not on this list. Best book.
That's a big novel not a short story or novella collection
@@anuparnoacharya5779 Technically it's a novella, at least that's what King calls it. But, he reviewed it as a novel.
Really sad not to hear "The End of the Whole Mess", "Herman Wouk is Still Alive", or "Graduation Afternoon" on here, while stuff like "Cain Rose Up" made it so high. Everyone's list is gonna be subjective, but still. As a long-time King fan, the omissions, in particular, surprised me. "Mess" is a heartbreaking look at the end of the world, "Wouk" is equally heartbreaking in the way it ends, and while Graduation Afternoon is a little simplistic, it's also well laid down. Come to that, Summer Thunder is also pretty good and I'm surprised it didn't make it while a lot of gorier, louder stuff did. What I'm seeing here is that you seem to like a lot of the classics, and that's fine, but I tend toward his more thought-provoking stuff a little. Cheers for the video though.
Surprised by the lack of love for "Nightmares and Dreamscapes"
2 things - First, The Jaunt is amazing. It's the only one of these I remember vividly because of how terrifying the ending is. It's gotta be King's best written ending. Second, where is The Night Flyer? (I think that was the title)
Got the standalone version of some of these, just finished reading the Langoliers. I know it gets a lot of heat, and the miniseries (which I watched right after) is beyond terrible, but I thought it was a fantastic story.
Gray Matter for me. Mrs. ____ Shortcut, Apt Pupil & Monkey Shines (Paw)?? This is from memory. Gotta revisit. Thanks for this video. (Only two minutes in, lol)🤦
Now I feel like I need to go steal your books 😂
You’re really cute! Thank you for the read suggestions’
And I was getting worried "The Mist" wasn't going to be on your list as you got closer to #1. Lol
I love "The Running Man". Richard Dawson was the perfect choice for game show host.
No love for Lunch at the Gotham Cafe (Everything's Eventual)? I really enjoyed that short story aside from The Man in the Black Suit.
Hi, jimmy!
I want to share with you about one book:
"KAYAN KOLLYN- The spiral of the Ellmott & messenger of the secret."
a great fiction of adventure, mystery, ART, an ancient CRAFFARTT, and science. available on amazon.
once you read it, you definitely love it, because it speaks about all dimensions of life, without the barrier of the beliefs
Love your content!
They made jersusalem’s lot into a tv show called chapelwaite. It’s awesome if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend
Thanks yeah I’ll check it out. I enjoyed the castle rock series.
Is your copy of The Eyes of the Dragon a first edition? I love the way it looks with the red on green.
It is yes. It’s a beautiful looking book. That’s why I chose to display it facing forward like that.
@@jimmymango would you ever do a video on how and when you obtained those kind of copies please? Or of your favorite copies?
EVERY TIME MY FAVORITES ARE AT THE BOTTOM
Apt Pupil has to be #1 for me and Blockade Billy is much better than some ppl give it credit for.
Go Big Ten (Gopher Guy here)
I really want to read Salems Lot then i found out its related to the dark tower series and now i find out it has a sequel and a prequel, not inly that but theres like a ton of books related to the dark tower so i guess also related to Salems Lot so how do i resd salems lot is there an order or soemthing
