Love this series. Yes I am binge watching. Something I am trying to figure out and would be a great gift idea is how to make the bowl covers (elastic and gathered) I tried a few things to night but not happy with results. I am so new to serging. In my mind should be able to use the shirting foot to gather as you go around but it stitches down the elastic. I need to pull harder on it but not sure if it’s ok for it to stitch it down. Or if it will actually work for a bowl cover.
@@deidrapowell8762 hi Deidra, Many sewists are timid about how much tension to put on elastic when stitching. The best way to get correct gathering tension is to spend time practicing on scrap fabric. Or an elasticator foot will give you even tension and no need to manually pull. The tighter you turn the tension knob on the top of the foot, the tighter the gathers will be. If you use a standard foot, you’ll need to pull from both in front and behind the foot to advance the fabric and elastic. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@deidrapowell8762 You have to pull from the back because when you stretch the elastic from the front, you’re working against the feed dogs being able to advance the elastic and fabric under the presser foot.

I don’t try to pull thread tails through a rolled hem stitch. It’s too narrow and you run the risk of pulling the stitches off the fabric edge. Use a seam sealant like Fray Check on both sides of each corner, let it dry completely, then trim the tails. Glad you enjoy the Tip Clips and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips. Hi Susan, Last Saturday I had a Zoom class Serger Essentials. It’s an overlock only class that focuses on the various serger components as well as numerous techniques. I do talk about differential feed in the class and how it works. There aren’t specific settings rather general rules for how to adjust DF. I always recommend testing fabrics (especially knits) to find the correct settings on the lengthwise direction as well as crosswise.typically the crosswise direction has more stretch and may need a higher DF setting to prevent stretching. Gail, I just discovered this video and I was wondering if you have the size you cut the napkins, the size for the Double Sided basket liner and the information to make the Zippered Bag? Where can I find these, please. I love everything you do!
Hi Wendy, Glad you found my TipClips. the napkin is 18" square, the double-sided basket liner is 20" square and the zipper bag is 12 1/2" x 11". the bag dimensions are arbitrary. It can be any size you want. The important thing is that the zipper is at least 4 -5". longer than the edge to which it will be sewn. The one in the video is on the straight of grain. If you wanted to vary it to take advantage of a print, stripe of plaid in a certain orientation, you definitely could. If you change grain Ines, be sure to pre-wash the fabrics so that if there is shrinkage, the double layer doesn’t get distorted. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Hi Gail Can you tell me what kind of thread you used for the napkins? Also, you mentioned in a previous video the different kinds of decorative threads that can be used for edging. One of them was Acrylic yarn which I really like the look of. Can that be purchased at Joann’s? And how hard is it to thread through the Babylock? I purchased a roll of wash away stabilizer, and I used it for the first time this past weekend (I’m a beginner sewist). But, I noticed it had this waxy, sticky film to it. Is that normal? Should I continue using it?
Amazon or Wawak are my resources. The wash away has a slightly sticky or grippy side. Should feel like plastic wrap or Saran Wrap. There are UA-cam videos by trainers for Babylock and aficionados who give tips on threading heavy decor weight threads.
You may need to rinse away the stabilizer a bit longer or if you're soaking it in the sink or a basin, change the water several times to remove residue. The good news is it won't ruin your fabric! The chain stores usually have very limited selections of decorative threads. Check out your local sewing machine dealer or online sources. Thanks!
Did you mean to omit stitching the opposite half of the zip onto the fabric? Would have been helpful for beginners. How are you liking the Bernina compared to the Babylock machines?

My needle thread breaks almost evertime I go over that thick seam. Any suggestions? It's so much easier to serge the edges than sew and flip inside out and having to topstitch after that. Thanks! @@GailPatriceDesign Decided to trim away the batting in the dart seams. That stopped the thread from breaking. That was the good news! The bad news is that it was not until I had made 10 of these that I realized the serger thread was not cotton. Now all the bowl cozies I made cannot safely be used in the microwave because the thread is made of polyester. 😭

What was the quilting stitch you used on the zipper bag? It looks like a Sashiko stitch, with a space between stitches.
