I’ve gone through something similar, except in an academic setting. We both left for good reason. The future is replete with opportunity. You’re such a strong person!
I am from SA and was an Au Pair 20 years ago. Your experience seems like a story out of a horror movie compared to the experience I had. I doubt back then the agency would’ve even allowed you to stay with the family when the needs of the child changed. I was blessed to have had a support who was 100% for the Au Pair’s wellbeing. It was totally normal back then to have Au Pairs switching families 2 to 3 times until they find a perfect fit. I had a lovely Jewish family.
$200 a week to care for twins and a 12 year old 😲. I paid my nanny a lot more 20 years ago, a lot and I am not rich but it is not fair to exploit others.
The pay is not high but in return there are opportunities open for au pairs. It also depends a lot on the host family to have great journey or not. But mostly, it’s also your attitude and your way of life too.
As a au pair I did meet wonderful people, traveled and most of all I meant my husband but the experience I had with a family was hell would not want someone to go though it. Great vlog

Au pair is really not easy, I also always say I wouldn’t want anyone to experience what I went through. I’m sorry you had a crazy family, but we are strong now because of them.
Can you help me with a reliable website or link to applying to become an au pair. Its good to know you had a good experience. Not all experiences are the same for everyone.
hey new to your channel ,new subscriber .i'm currently an Au pair in massachusetts, boston from south africa,it feels so good to see south africans who were previous au pairs and to hear them share their experience and how they overcame .i'm loving your channel can't wait to see more content .
Heyyy😃 welcome and thank you for subscribing. I hope you’re having a great experience, it also feels good to share and hoping it helps someone going through the same experience or someone who’s thinking of becoming an au pair. Thank you so much😊...more content coming and I hope you continue loving my channel ❤️.
@@AfricanCalifornia so far I loving your channel and yesterday I slept late watching it .its very helpful for those who are Au pairs and future Au pair. Thank you for sharing your journey with us
I was also an Au Pair and went into rematch. I have to agree that at the end of the day the agencies aren't that concerned about the au pairs. Sometimes it felt like we were just cheap labour. But I had many friends who had host families who just treated them like cheap labour and it was all about the families taking advantage. I still think au pairing was the best experience I could have done for myself. I learnt so much about myself, but its not as whimsical as the agents make it seem when you first apply.
I agree, when you apply they promise to protect you and you gonna have this amazing experience, you’ll feel like part of the family but that’s not how families treats us. I was feeling the same way too, cheap labour. The only thing we can appreciate is how it changes us and we learn a lot about ourselves. When I started, I was shy and couldn’t stand up for myself but I came out strong and now I can speak up if I’m not happy about something.
I was also an aupair in California San Francisco at first and rematched with a family in Newark a neighbouring town there, my experience was the hardest thing that I have done in my entire life it was not at all what they advertised it to be yoh guys BUT I'm so grateful for the journey and experience it really trained me for life I came back a different person than I was in a positive way I'm so glad I did this while I was still young and single with no children I needed it alot and you see that in the end of the journey, ngoba ngempela ukuthi wenzan that was big and out of your comfort zone and you learnt from, there were good days bad days and really bad days I also learnt that money and fine things dont equal happiness but I'm so glad I did it so glad...
So sorry you through the worse. I was an ua pair in 2021, I had an amazing family. I'm also from South Africa durban. I've been here over decade now. Sometimes pleasing others before yourself can put you at risk. You handled it with so much wisdom. Just know that I absolutely understand. I love you girl. All the way from North Carolina Charlotte
As an employee you were entitled your time off. Your agency should have notified you of your employee benefits before you left your home country. What the host dad was horrible but please remember this situation with men of the household is not limited to employee it also happens to female visitor and family members. The host dad action was criminal and against the laws of the USA.
"Please take time to get some mental help", just not those pills the doctor prescribed, or time off, or any sympathy from us. Yoh some of these families neh.
Omg sorry you had to go through that , i had an au pair from the saint Vincent honestly she was not my au pair she became more like my sister the bond was strong, fortunately she could only stay for 3 years as she wanted to train to be a teacher which i will continue to fully support when ever she decides to come back to the uk she always has a home and a family that continue to love her. I get scared to get another au pair i case she is opposite to what i have experienced .Glad you got out of there babe
How are you going to have someone take care of 3 kids, one special needs all week and weekends and pay them 200 dollars. Do they know how much day carecost
Ive been an au pair many years ago. Europe was great. I wanted to go to the US but many girla had such a terrible experience with their host family. Even the agency which placed me was very reluctant to place ladies in the USA. Europe is a great place to be an au pair.
Hello, Your video just popped up on my UA-cam, I used to be an Au Pair and now I’m a CC working for an AuPair Agency. I’m truly sorry what you went through and how your CC and Agency handled the whole situation! I would have done the same thing! You stayed longer than the family deserved it! I hope they got kicked out of the program!!
Thank you for watching. I don’t want my video to scare you from doing au pair, it should be your guide and learn from it. Au pair experiences are not the same, I have friends who had an amazing experience and even after my own experience I would still recommend it to someone because from it I learned so much and it made me stronger as a person, I met amazing friends from different countries that had my back until the end. My advice to you, take your time to match with the family, when you get there enjoy the journey cos you might have a good experience, if it doesn’t work out it’s ok you have an option to rematch. If it doesn’t work out after rematch, it’s still ok because you gave your all and were brave enough to try.
Hi Mvelo. AUPAIR SA its an online agency. My friend used LITTLE SUNSHINE offices in La Lucia you pay them about R200 but it's legit. You can also search online in terms of how much per hour and the requirements. Good luck ❤
So true! Absolutely lovely accent and as well as a warm demeanor. You'd be perfect a Asmr Artist or making audiobooks. I'll bet you are a wonderful singer. 😊 Thank you for sharing your experience. Your video is very informative and thoughtful. How I wish I could've taken care of by someone like you, I was left with whoever she found and I was badly abused. I'm quite old now but the damage and mental anguish is still very fresh. 🥀🥀
Mac P. Thank you girl, I’m also glad I met you and you’re one of the friends who were there for me during that time. I appreciate you! Thank you for watching❤️😊🤗
So much for people with history of being shipped and enslaved to the US...wow this host dad is so insensitive...so much oppression... Some people need to be taught how to be nice...
I am a single mother of twins in Atlanta seriously considering getting an au pair. I’m so sorry that this happened to you. They seemed not to care about you. I definitely do would not want my au pair to walk away feeling like the way you did. What advice would you give a potential host?
Thank you😊. Au pair is a really great program if both host and au pair has good intentions. From the point of an au pair I’d say that being in a different country with people you don’t know really well is not easy. So making your au pair comfortable and feeling like the part of the family is important. The first month is usually not easy on Au pairs. So my advice is that while you’re doing interviews, be open and be honest when au pairs ask questions, Could be about your expectations. Understanding that au pair is a cultural exchange program is really important, so on days when your au pair is off allow her to explore and make friends. If au pairs feel cared for and a part of the family, everything will flow naturally. Take your time doing the interviews cos not all au pairs are good too. If you’re not sure about someone, possibly it’s not going to work. Communication is key, make your au pair feel safe to come talk to you about anything. That helps so you know if there’s something going on or if they are not happy about something. If you’re not happy about something too, voice it out right away.
I would not recommend anyone be an au pair, I have heard so many horror stories. Being verbally or sexually harassed and being asked to do more work than what was agreed upon!! Always have money to buy your plane ticket or train ticket and leave!!
👏👏👏great Video,so sad what u hd to go through,my thought is they take advantage of pple aupair kindness...was aupair too n Germany n l went through tough times with my family too but thank God l was wise enough
I‘m so sorry that this had happened to you! My first host family lived in Chicago too. I left them after 3 weeks because they were just weird did inappropriate things and treated me like an employee. When I left the family I had a horrible time. After 3 weeks and many many horrible things they had done to make it as hard as possible for me to find a new family, I rematched and moved to a new host family in the Washington State. I can just say that they are the best thing that has ever happened to me! They call me their daughter and I know that they love me. I truly enjoy my experience here and I’m thankful every day for my miracle (that’s what like to call my 2nd host family). Especially since I also know how horrible being an au pair can be. I’m so sorry that you didn’t find your miracle in the US 💔
I’m glad to know that you rematched with the best family. Some families just don’t deserve to have au pairs. Crazy that after I left they were given another au pair that stayed with them few months and left, she reached out to me asking why I left the family. Things they were doing to me, they did it to her too. Me and that au pair didn’t even know each other to make this up.
@@jacquelinegrayden4706 of course I work for them and they pay me. But other than many other au pairs I just work 12 hours a week. They pay for my riding lessons and call me their daughter. They tell me that they love me every night before I go to bed. So I am way more to them than an employee. They are truly my family and they tell me every single day that I will forever be theirs.
It is so shocking to realize how many young girls have gone through a similar experience. What you are told to expect there is far from the reality. Even when you've done the research its still not the same as when you get there. Don't be fooled by others, most of them have no choice but to stay there. @African California I'm so happy that you left and made it back home alive. You're strong and after that experience you will survive anything!
I am glad that you were strong and that you finally left. People can be so mean and make the most out of you when you are a nice person. I have been learning this the hard way especially after I left home and stayed by myself. I am still learning to be strong but I am so much better now. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I know that you are more than successful. Thank goodness you ran away from the misery. No one deserves that!
Just found your channel! Love it sisi. I'm so sorry this happened to you. How did you get back on your feet after the whole experience? Did you come back home to SA or?
Me and you both babe I experienced the same thing it’s really hard being an aupair I went through 2 families in one year . I have to pay for my ticket rn leaving in a week or so , the pay isn’t that good we are really sold dreams .
very similar story I went through. Super depressed and everything -just staying on my bed and crying. Hostdad and hostmom super akward on the end. I kinda feel it happens to 70% of most of the au pairs
I’m sorry you also went through the similar experience, but I’m sure it taught you a lot about yourself and people. You are strong you made it through💗.
Please sister, thank you for sharing your story with us but am kindly requesting you how I can join Aupair 🙏🙏am currently working as a house maid in Saudi Arabia and my contract is soon getting expired, I wish you can help me please to reach my goals of working in Europe 🙏🙏🙏🤲pleaseeeeeee
I’ve been an Au Pair 3 times, my first time I got a horrible family, with a control freak for a host mom. The second family was amazing, and my third family, due to Covid, I’m extending my time with them because they are amazing. However, I cannot wait until I can have my own space, I dislike living in the home, I always feel like.it’s not mine you know no matter how welcoming they are, it’s like an awkward feeling 😂
I feel you!!!! How was your experience with rematching with new host families? I think I need to start looking for a new family and am wondering how long it took you to find your second family!
You were right not to wait the two weeks. They can not force you to stay anywhere. Hope you learned to put yourself first. You should have let them know from the get go that you weren't comfortable taking care of the child that now had special needs. The family thought of themselves and tried to find another caretaker behind your back. You have a good heart , but some people don't deserve your generosity.
I was a mother's help many years ago I'm 60 now was 17 at the time I live in Wales and went to London the children were lovely and thier father but the mother was so horrible
Thank you so much for sharing your story I was an aupair myself And there’s nothing that can prepare anyone for the things that happen we just adjust but I commend you for your strength and doing what you needed to do to make sure that you were in the right place mentally and for your own well-being... and sharing your story so helpful ❤️❤️❤️
You were depressed because of your job, therefore, you needed to leave. Once those inappropriate behavior appeared with the husband, you should report him immediately. Walking around in your underwear is not appropriate. That must be scary for you.
I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. I’m an African American born, raised, and still living in Chicago. My husband and I have had the privilege and pleasure to visit South Africa six times in the last 10 years, and we have friends in SA that have become family. We would have loved to be of support to you. Stay strong, Sisi.
Hi, your experience is very helpful to me and to everyone who experienced or is experiencing what you experienced before. I am currently wanting to leave my family without saying good bye, or telling them. I am from the Philippines but I am scared they are going to report me and I will not get a European visa or come back to Europe again. What can you advice me to do?
but the family never cared for her mental well being and the man of the house was sexually harassing her. She had every right to leave and that family never realised that they had a gem in their presence. Too bad, their loss!
I am disappointed regarding your response to this poor woman's plight. The lack of respect and professionalism demonstrated by the host husband working in the medical field with vulnerable people , he is a danger to all women.,The child with special needs, who required a trained nurse , the mother as a trained nurse should have carried out her own nursing assessment based on the information given by the specialist, inorder to ensure that the childs needs were being met ,also to avoid any safeguarding issues. If the mother was really a nurse , she would have realised from the start that this lady could not take care of her sick child .This mother was prepared to compromise the safety of the child and the nanny . The nanny was lucky to get away from that family before anything could happen, landing her in jail.If anything bad had taken place, causing the child harm, the mother would blame the nanny , whilst failing to acknowledge her failings both as a mother and a nurse.
Paying someone $200 per week for a full week's work is not just immoral, it is illegal in the USA. That is what we call abuse. People, please know that every state has a Department of Labor. Call them if you are being used for work and you are here legally. They will get your back pay for you. I believe minimum wage in most places in the US is $7.25/hour on the low end and $15.00/hour in some states.
Unfortunately it’s not illegal . The laws for Au pair jobs are sickening . Agencies are making money from this girls whilst they get paid peanuts .It’s literally disgusting to pay someone 200 dollars to take care of a child who needs that kind of care .
@@tgondo I respect your comment so I did some research. I found that the situation with au pairs is weird and unfortunate because technically the au pair is to be paid the legal minimum rate, but the host family can charge the au pair up to 40% of their pay for room and board. The host family can reduce the au pair's wages before she receives her paycheck. Not cool. That is slave labor, imo.
I also went without a goodbye. The family I lived with was from California, I had just moved fro Washington state because of the weather and decided to go to a two weeks annual camp meeting. While at the camp meeting I met a family that I shared my situation of wanting to get a job and settle down. They were trying to sign up their aunt for Medicaid so she could pay her caregiver. I waited the time they had given but nothing happened and I could not be paid if she hadn’t been approved. I called the social service (inhome supportive services)since I had my provider no and their aunts case no and I was told they couldn’t approve her. I had stayed there for like 5 months no money but a roof under my head I used to buy my food. I dint feel right since my life was at pose not working and not in school but just taking care of their aunty “as we I wait for her approval by the government Medicaid” I decided to just live and look for work, I walked in at the Salvation Army lancaster and the fact that it was Christmas season they were hiring the bell ringers (kettle donations) the people who stand outside stores in Christmas outfits wishing everyone a merry Christmas rigging the bell 🛎. I shared my living situation to the Salvation Army managers and they found a need to host me till I get enough money to rent a place even thought they aren’t allowed to since the houses they live are company houses. Still while ringing the bell a sweet lady approached me after she detected my accent she asked if I was in school I told her I dropped my schooling and I was trying to enroll to a new school since I was still new. She told me she was and ELS teacher in the neighboring city. I also shared that I dint have somewhere to stay since my Salvation Army host are never allowed to host people but had decided to give me a roof. She offered to take me the college she worked, offered to help me look for work and stay with them till I get on my feet. In short I don’t wana waste more time since the family I live with kept telling me that their aunts social worker told them that she was getting approved soon!
Thank you for sharing your story, I’m sorry you went through that. You did what was best for you, 5 months was too long not having an income. You’re strong and God bless those who were able to help you.🙏🏾
So sorry for you, we had 3 late Au-pair and we really took them like family , they still come to us every weekend and we help them still. Our Son love them so much.we send 2 to study in university and one make Ausbildung. I really thank full to have them and they are all come from Kenya.
Thank you 😊. Thank you for being a good host to your au pairs. Making them feel like family is really important, being in a different country is not easy. If the au pair feel they are at home, they are willing to help more than whats on the contract, not that they have to but they show their appreciation.
Yes they really feel welcome by us, we took them with us holiday. We paid all her Kurs, we took them shopping with us but they are not greedy, I really loved them like my family and We paid more ,and it just not about money... I see my son love them so much, they have Beautyfull Heart , I Never doubt to leave them with my Son. We are so lucky to have them.
I was a Aupair in Spain . I had a terrible experience . Can’t believe it’s been a year since I left Spain . My the host mom had a bad drinking problem & the host dad was awesome . But it was too much too handle & the kids were cussing a lot to be 7 & 10 years old . I left right away back to the United States 😐🚫 lol 🤣
People’s experiences are different, I didn’t share to discourage anyone😊. You can still do it, but just know your experience might be good or bad. I have friends who had the best host families that even helped me when mine wasn’t good to me.
So sad buh what matters is that you came out strong...been trying to get to Canada buh got no ways... Tried AU pair buh no help... How can I get there..
Yes I came out strong. I honestly don’t know about Canada, for US I used an agency to help with all the application process but you pay a lot, not same time. If you’re in South Africa the agency is based in Durban.
I heard about Au pairing not long ago... I'd really love to experience it... And I hope if I do, it will be a positive experience... Kindly anyone advice on how to get started... I'm Kenyan 25
I'm sorry they took advantage of you. You were not qualified to take care of a special needs child and they should have increased your pay if they were begging you to stay.
okay i have a question. is there anything that they can actually do, in your type of situation, if you just get fed up with them and decide to leave? can they actually prevent you from getting a visa back into the country again?
Greetings from Washington DC. I wish you had reported the house dad's behavior to the company you can to this country through. Because it looked like you would have been sexually assaulted soon. Sometimes God himself will make things unbearable so you will leave before bad things can happen. The child getting sick was the first thing, the man walking aroung in his underpants was yet another. The house dad's trying to get you to drink alcohol was yet another thing. God was giving you signs. Hopefull this video will help another young woman. God bless

Au Pair is the worst job in the world. I am glad you left.
I’m glad you had a good experience and I am sure you are great with children, but Au Pairs often are mistreated or taken advantage of.
I think there are good families who just need help due to their work schedules, but there are many who abuse their staff.

As an employee you were entitled your time off. Your agency should have notified you of your employee benefits before you left your home country.

Hi Therez, kindly tell me how one applies for an au pair job, looking forward to apply, have been a nanny for 6 years.

You were an employee

@@odrunnkolltveit2773 no, I still am an au pair
@@jacquelinegrayden4706 of course I work for them and they pay me. But other than many other au pairs I just work 12 hours a week. They pay for my riding lessons and call me their daughter. It is so shocking to realize how many young girls have gone through a similar experience. What you are told to expect there is far from the reality. Even when you've done the research its still not the same as when you get there. You're strong and after that experience you will survive anything!
I am glad that you were strong and that you finally left. People can be so mean and make the most out of you when you are a nice person.

I’m so sorry about your experience z☹️
Well if you say your going to leave, if things get hard for you than it feels for the family like your not suitable for them.
but the family never cared for her mental well being and the man of the house was sexually harassing her.
I was also aupair in Germany I went through alot bad experience.
I pray you are in a better situation
am so sorry for your experience, but we learn in life, but you really look beautiful.
If you are closely with other families need Au pair, please let me know,I really want to
I also went without a goodbye.

God bless
Couldn't have said it any better🤔
