This year my neighbours and me have an i formal arrangement to make sure pur seeds are getting mostly used up: we check in with one another which plants we all want to have. Then, we share the bounty. It’s a tit-for-tat arrangement. When one of us opens up a packet of seeds and has some left, the offer goes out to exchange the leftovers for other seeds. Our gardens have pretty much the same requirements and the arrangement is mostly for flowering plants used as companion plants for pest control.
For veggie seeds, the arrangement is mostly for things that need to be rotated. We all have only small areas dedicated to food plants and that makes variety both more of a challenge and more important. Last year’s carrot seeds from my neighbour might end up with me, and she might get my peas.
We also tend to share harvests: bumper crops are offered, no strings attached. Especially with my next door neighbour, who is a single Mom like me. Then again, we also team up on groceries. Some things are cheaper when bought in bulk, so why not call your neighbour when a bulk buy is too much for your household but perfect when shared?
This entire exchange thing started by chance when my neighbour moved in last year in April. The weather was unusually clement and I was planting out marigolds I’d sown myself. I had too many and headed over to introduce myself with a tray in hand. A few weeks later she reciprocated with pansies. Our other neighbours joined in over the year. Now it seems we’ve got a regular food-and-plant/seeds thing going on. It’s even morphed into texts along the lines of “Made too much soup, wanna trade? Got too many beans too, willing to trade for apples. Seed shopping tomorrow. Thoughts?”
The chart you shared is gold. I’m sharing it with the neighbours!
That is awesome!
