- Slowly checking off the to-do list boxes on project Mossybroke the 1980 Peterbilt 359. Today we put a big fuel pump on and catch a problem that surely would've cost us a cylinder kit or worse.

Badass thanks Trip!
I remember heating up a wrench and bending it for the fuel pump bolt like 40 years ago
Lol hell yea.
Love the peterbilt 359 if I ever hit the lottery collecting old big rigs will be my addiction
In my experience it is much better to find these issues during maintenance than under full load. Glad you found it and the engine didn't crash
100% Melvin glad I caught it!
That 359 looks and sounds beautiful, definitely one you should be proud of!
Thanks brother
Watching you drive, hear that 8V92, WOW THAT BRINGS ME BACK TO THE OLD 2 STROKE DAYS!!.......A Lot of Noise, RPM'S, and not going anywhere!..Great Video!
Lol ouch Mark! 🤣🤣🤣
Wayne, installing a higher capacity pump in a high h.p. Detroit is always a good thing. However, your work is in vain if you didn’t open up your restricted fitting from R80 to R 110 to take advantage of the extra fuel that is now just bypassing in your fuel pump causing heat & not giving you more flow which what you need to do for cooler fuel at injectors. What I would surely recommend is that you open up your secondary fuel filter IN from pump to 3/8” NPT & use a R5 hose in 1/2” id instead of the the 3/8” line. I don’t know your serial number but what you also need to check is if your fuel stanchions are the larger bore, if not , drill them out to accommodate the increased flow. We always installed a standard size transmission cooler on rad to route the return fuel to the tank as our owner/operators that ran South always lost power when fuel tanks got low & the ambients went into the 90’s. All these upgrades were done in an accredited Detroit Diesel shop with a Clayton dyno to back up our experiments.
Mossy is the mintiest sounding (and looking) 359 I've ever seen. Those Jake's sound amazing too. Love the content Wayne.
There was a time I work in the car wash industry. We used to make our own high pressure lines. We used the same ends would cut and make our own lines. We called them reusable ends. They are awesome.
Badass. Only way to go
Man that truck is angry! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. I loved it! 😁👍🏾❤
Hell yea anytime!
Be sure and remember the fuel restrictor fitting on those Detroit's- when they get blowed out not even a new pump will help - and be careful they look just like any other brass fuel fitting but it has a small hole that restricts flow back to the return line so that fuel pressure actually goes up... have fun..
Loved the ride at the end brought back some good memories listening to the 8v purr down the road I drove trucks with detroits a lot one was in a 1980 GMC Astro
Badass Justin!
So freakn glad u caught that issue b4 it snowballed into something huge!!
Me too Justin! That coulda sucked!
@@Ol2Stroker o god yea catastrophic!!!!
Your a very good mechanic, an bad cylinder, you can check temperature or you can hear it. You got very lucky finding that alot of people would keep driving it till it fell apart.Your truck is very nice an clean an drives and sounds perfect. I watch you fix alot people stuff, very nice of you. Thank You ...
Thanks Adam!
I really like to see these engines that you in North America are very common in trucks here in Europe can only be found in the naval sector and electrogenic groups !! great I really appreciate your videos
Yea they're super uncommon over there. A scania v8 is badass too though!
Those Detroits sound great. Can’t wait to see this in Macungie next week.
Fingers crossed we make it
Another great video Wayne! Love that old 359!
Thanks Peter I do too!
Nice repair man good u cough that bad injector spring. She purrs so nice
Screaming like she should sounds great Wayne , good job brother
Thanks Rex how you liking NC?
@@Ol2Stroker it's freaking awesome, I'm new England free no cops pulling you over for stupid regulations brother FREEDOM!!!!!
The more I watch your videos on them old Detroit engines the more I'm loving them only wish I would have been able to have run one before having to early retire, only ever experienced the 60 series think they were 450hp then when you turned the cruise on it up to like 470hp or something like that, all I know is when you turned the cruise on it sounded like you opened up the 4barrel . Keep the videos coming & we'll keep watching & loving them
Thanks Brad. Them series 60s run great too!
Your guts always right! After working on EMD 710 V16’s I learned that.
Yup!
Excellent job bro that beast has no obstruction in the fuel line now flows good 👏
Really turned the fuel pressure up!
Can you run a lift pump on a detroit ?
@@rexgratteaux8655 yes but they don't take pressure not really worth it
Coul hear blubber as u walked around . I like magnets in drain back areas to collect schards of broken springs and what ever else . Sounds smooth now !
My first truck was a freight shaker with a 8v 71, then 2nd was a pete with 8v92, I was a big truck now. Those were the day's. 👍🙂🇺🇲
Badass Dennis!
Great video Wayne it's never a dull moment love watching you fix your truck. Glad you finally looked at where it was slobbering out the exhaust. Atleast you have it fixed now sounds great stay safe Wayne. Definitely looking forward to your next video!
Thanks Richard we're getting there
Good Mechianc knows there equipment and knows how everything ticks good job Wayne love that old iron…
Thanks Bryan!
I absolutely love Mossybroke, so glad you caught the fuel pump issue on time before any major damage resulted. Sounds like open exhaust which sounds great on a turbo 2 stroke Detroit, though I personally find open exhaust a bit much if the Detroit is a non turbo.
I agree completely Dwight. Naturals will kill you without mufflers!
Wayne. Good catch. At least you now know it's going to run right. Been Fallowing your channel now for a while. Started with the generator video. Hope you get it sorted.
Thanks Chris I've got all the stuff I'm just about to redo the cabinet I'm excited!
Dammit I just can't get over how good that ol girl sounds!! Such a healthy machine.
Hell yea I love this thing
Some excellent ingenuity Wayne brother
Thanks man.
crazy almost like we planned it. good video brother.
Yea that's funny how it worked out. It'll be a good one!
Your torque wrench makes me laugh, when I was working on the Butterfly John would bust my ass for no torque wrench, told him listen pull on handle and go click, he'd get pissed go back and set in his chair,as far on injectors go for it,as John would say it could only blow up ,great video, thanks Wayne
Thanks Randy. Injectors are one of the few deals I'll use a real torque wrench on.
Where did the v-12 from the iron butterfly go??
@@ruxoneto6560 Gene still has it as a spare for his other v12 powered pulling truck
@@Ol2Stroker what's a torpue wrench!!
i remember my mechanic at my trucking company in late 70s that i drove for the senior guy he worked on every engine he knew the problem before you even said anything about a problem and it was fixed instantly he was that good..i had a 79 pete cabover that did have air conditioning trouble he replaced every componet in that truck best we could get was 83 degrees in truck air wide open.that one mystifyed him and me and everyone he got real cranky when he got later on in his years he retired at 73 dyed when he was 76 but wow he was so smart he knew everything about semis all types all engines trannys air conditioning everything before scanners ect.he was just a little guy but a go getter for sure.i look back and i respect him he had a 150 trucks to deal with at that time he had 4 people under him.hes gone now but ill never forget his spitfire getting it done attitude.every time i saw him his hands where just black from grease and oils he never wore gloves or safety stuff.but that 79 pete was a beast but it wanted you to sweat air never did work right from day 1 and it was the fancier one to big bunk dark metallic brown with a orange border on stripes and 2 different colored maroon stripes running front front to back
Very odd on the AC I'd love to know what the actual problem was! Lots of them old hands have passed it's getting difficult to get any help with these old engines.
I work as Maintenance Operations Controller in a Semi-large Airline over here in Europe. currently on my first of 6 Night Shift. Just making sure things move along nicely, keeping tabs, get our Passengers to where they need to go... Love to have your videos going on one of my screens. Never worked on any of the wonders you show us, but hey.. Hydraulics and Mechanics are the same if its on an aircraft or a truck. Thank you for keeping me awake and keep up the good work, you would've made an excellent Aircraft Engineer. well appreciated.
Another kick ass video Wayne The old Pete's looking good and Sounding bad-ass Looking forward to the next video brother👍👍
Thanks brother!
That is 1 gorgeous ride. Love that truck. I just had my oil pump gear shear off on my 97 12 valve. Amazing that it didnt lock up in gear housing. I'd share a photo but not sure how to in comments. Great video and very informative as always Wayno!
Thanks Mark glad that oil pump wasn't worse for you
Wayne I learned something keep up the awsome content your one hell of a mechanic on the detroits big 👍👍👍👍
Thanks brother!
Threaded NPT brass fittings need proper torque to seal. 4.75 ugga dugga's to be exact. 4.70 ugga dugga's and it leaks, 4.80 ugga dugga's and the threads strip. I heard the torque click when you were putting on fittings with the pump in the vice, but not that last fitting. LOL!
Yeah, looking forward to seeing more progress on that old 352. "Old" 352... I'm older than that 352! Oh, well, nice work, thanks for taking us along.
Thanks brother. There's always one fitting that ain't tryna play nice but we got er!
Nice meeting you today, I’m one of the three kids who talked to you
Thanks Parker really glad y'all came out it was great meeting y'all!
I've watched a few videos. Like them since I'm a diesel mechanic my self!! The only difference is i work on trucks ranging from epa7 to new! Just subscribed!!
Very cool thanks Matt!
Good job catching it, better late than never. Shows how loyal a Detroit can be.
Soo...you gonna make man jewellery outta the injector spring to hawk😜😆
Have a good weekend mate🍺👍🏻
To be honest I didn't even think of that I probably should lol.

Your neighbors are lucky! Some landscaper in my area has some old detroit powered truck but I hear it only once or twice a year.
Aw man. I wish some of my neighbors had some Detroits!
I only use a Crescent wrench when nothing else works, but when I do, it's a real Crescent Wrench made in my hometown of Jamestown, NY! I searched for years to find some.
Oh that's awesome I'll hafta find me some
I drove a Freightliner with a twin turbo V8 92 with 5X4 trans. sweet rig. for Charles Bertolino out of El Cajon, Ca.
Yesssss!!!
I'm now accepting donations to go towards a set of weatherhead sockets since I didn't know I needed them till just now. Thanks Wayne🤣🤣
You're welcome bro!
Another great video Wayne! That 8-92 sounds rowdy!
Thanks Robert, love the way she sounds!
Ain't nothing better then hearing an old two stroke gearing up then hitting the Jake's, nice fix on the injector

I can't wait to get it back outa the garage
Always a treat! Great video well done.
Thanks Casey!
Wayne the diesel mechanic king. 🇺🇸👌🏻🚛
Lol that might be a stretch
Good catch there Wayne. Boy I totally agree it's not the best time for the injector upgrade just before a major road trip...go with known reliable and play around with upgrade unknowns closer to home.
BTW....I know it's a pain in the ass filming, editing, uploading more shit...but man! I'm loving it! Thank you!
Thanks Terry! It's killing me to do the upgrade but gotta wait
Great video as always wayne, keep em comin!
Thanks Jimmy!
Great Video as always Wayne hope you have a good weekend
Thanks Tom you too
Man that's a nice old ride better than a new one 👍👍🇺🇸
Totally Elmer thanks!
Jeez your lucky no broken bits came loose and got tangled up with other moving parts in there. Love that truck 👍
Narrowly avoided catastrophe!
Friggin' SWEET that Pete
Thanks man
Sounds awesome as usual Wayne. I always love to tell this Detroit story.....I worked at a earthwork company and they had a General 14 wheeler with a 6 92 in it. One day I happened to be in the shop helping the mechanic and the young girl that drove said General came in and said " my truck will only back up "........we both said "what ?" She said again " my truck will only back up " the mechanic and I both realized what had happened and ran out and yup.......smoke outa the air cleaners hahaha. We shut her down , fired her back up and sent her back out. Love those old things.
The only problem there is it don't make oil pressure running backwards! Thanks David!
Put a 6v92 together, dropped it in the truck, fired it up sounded good till couldn't back up,put timing gears on wrong side, complete bummer
@@randywinter1543 duuuuuuuude that's the worst. It's a fucking pile of work to get that back apart
@@Ol2Stroker yes that is correct. I told her next time that happens shut it off immediately
@@davidleighton5701 yea definitely
There's no shame in using a crescent wrench. In fact, I think the adjustable hammer is a must have for working on junk. Anyway, I love that Pete and the way she sings!
Thanks Ben!
Nice catch!
Bet it runs better now.
Love the sound
The proper name for that wrench is "Reach around".
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm calling it that from now on thanks!
Ha! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that will check nozzle spray using a plastic mallet
Definitely!
I love drinking coffee and watching another man work. Lol
Lol I've gotta try that!
Nice save !! Don’t kick yourself Wayne
Nawww the embarrassment wears off quickly around here 🤣🤣
Caught that one just in time for sure. You going to paint the Cabbover Pete the same colours? Maybe tripe that yellow with a bit of Gold between it and the Green [those colours between the 359, the Brockway... Fleet colours fo sho!]. Nice! Anyway, this 359... such a Hotrod of a truck! Love it!
Nawwww I'm not changing anything on the cabover.
@@Ol2Stroker Ah well, maybe the next cabby can get the colours lol. Ever think of doing the front axle air ride kit on the cabover? Save your kidneys and lower Back the jack-hammer treatement and all?
Thank you soo much for your movies!!!
Im from Sweden (you know where there is no law and everybody Shooting?)
When i was a small kid i used to build those "amt" plastic models....petebilt..mack..
But here those trucks dont exist!! Ill remember when i assembly the engine...i wonder to myself.. "strange...? an v8 with a compressor"...
I cant help it i just love Detroit diesel🤔🤔
But here i vill never ser or hear a beast...

Best regards from Sweden!!
Keep on truckning!!!
Another great job done on a great truck.👌🏻
Thanks Damion!
Damnit that sweet Detroit singin. Thanks dude
Thanks Henry!
Good thing you catched the faulty injector before it really turned into an issue :)
Put a load on the trailer and put ol Mossy to the test... The 8V92 will love it while breaking your wallet while it's turning Money into an angry Sound... Totaly worth it.
Bigger injectors in Mossy... I wouldnt do that... She's gold as she is right ????
I mean the startermotor barely works and the engine is working already.... as MINT as it gets.
She has the power/boost... And the power on the jakes soooo keep it as it is what i would do (you know what the COE is like with the bigger injectors when starting)
Keep up the great content!
Greetz Bjorn
Thanks Bjorn. I probably shouldn't turn it up but then what would I have to fix?
@@Ol2Stroker There will be more 'junk' in the near future and otherwise how about ol Brockie with the Golden 6-71 and some gear related stuff ;) (Just an idea to make it roadworthy) The Genny hooked to the house in case of an emergency when you need the power.... when the power goes out. Yep im starting to dream off again XD
That's one beautiful rig bud.
Thanks Bubba!
Love those old detroits wind the piss out of them and then shift great video 👍👍👍
Back in the Day. My ex-boss bought 3 brand new, same spec 84 freightliner. Silver 92s 15spd overs. 411rears. We hauled steel on flats with side kits. They were 475 92ta Silver motors. They were bullet proof. No leaks. Wicked bad fuel mileage. Next new truck was a 86 freightliner cabovers with a 425 air to air. 13sp. 370s. Got almost 2 miles to the gallon better. LMAO. Those 92s were fun to drive through. Keep Up the Great Work. Stay Safe. ! 🇺🇸👍
I'm super curious how it'll do for mileage... Guess we're gonna see.
Use to haul up to 60grand on the deck. Load in Buffalo. Next day empty in Ohio or Kentucky. Great power. The good old days when Truckin was a fun job. They have really ruined a great job. 🇺🇸☹️😥
Have you replaced all of the fuel lines yet. ?
Hi from uk wayne👋👍 well that fuel pump certainly sorted step one in engine bay 👍 was it a higher flow or same flow pump? But that injector spring was good spot mate pleased you caught it👌 better now than never tho 👍and taking pete to get food as a daily I love that!!! Definitely sounds good. Appreciate the videos, been almost 30 years since I tore apart Detroit Injectors. Was hoping you were going to install the big injectors. Thanks
Thanks Doug. I have a set just need to get back from this trip

They've always been great to me. Did you have the OG greens?
@@Ol2Stroker What do you mean? The industrial green 8V92's? No they were all silver DDEC TA ones. One was 430-450 HP I think , the other 2 are 500's
@@castirondude so the "green" 92s were from 74-80 and they were up to 435hp. They were junk. The "silver series" came out in 81 and were much more reliable.
