Also can breath fire. LOVE IT!!!!
Only a Kiwi would be crazy enough to run something with 800 horsepower, in a car that weighs barely a metric tonne, and revs like a Formula 1 lol. A Formula 1 has the advantage of huge downforce to stick it to the ground, so anything wild in this would take some balls. Very well turned out machine. I normally don't like the sound of a rotary, but this one is an exception
However, this is a Mazda RX4. Have you any idea how many generations behind chassis-wise that is? Not to mention being a rotary and a relatively high torque one, it's akin to having an engine that can rev like a moto GP racing bike, but can do it in seconds, giving the kind of acceleration that would make it one hell of a handful. There's no turbo lag in this because rotaries can rev so much quicker than piston engines
At a conservative estimate, approximately 2500lbs. The RX4 was a very lightweight car. The weight of the engine over a rotary might add about 100lbs, but it makes a 1990s Civic look chunky by comparison in stock trim
Mechknight73 I want exact #'s. I had a couple Rx-7s and swapped parts with Rx-8 owners, and the guys that swapped corvette LS engines claimed an almost 90lb weight reduction from a 2 rotor 13b.. The car is clearly a drag car and is going to appear to be 'light', but what is the weight and has anyone made a 1/4 mi run in this thing yet?
Over 800hp out of a 3.9L displacement and no turbo. I don't think there's any reason to spoil the pure sound of this thing with a turbo. Especially considering how easily it lays rubber with those huge tires.
Ryan Chandler Oh dear you really dont know anything about rotary engines do you. Mazda quote the swept chamber volume as 654cc (look it up) Each rotor has 3 chambers. 654 x 3 = 1962cc x 6 rotors = 11,772cc Now you know why they absolutely drink fuel, hence they're no longer made.
I was going off how Mazda rates their engines. But my main point was that engine takes up a small amount of space for the amount of power it puts out. In reality Manoo is correct on how the engine should be rated, it's rated lower purely for tax and engine size rulings, albeit being completely incorrect.
My mom had an 86 RX-7 13B-T turbo with a 5 speed was a great car, bought it new and had it until mid 2000's never had any major issues besides a clutch, had 140,000 kilometers on it when she sold it.
sweet, 6 rotors when 20B has only 3, still one thing is missing - a turbocharger :D. It's scary now to drive this beast imagine it like twin turbocharged. Or one massive turbocharger. Though that way could be too much torque and wheels might spin out. How about RPM? does it operates on like 1k RPM? Or do you always have to keep high RPM?
6 rotor is amazing in its own right. you can't just turbo this, you can potentially go 3times+ horsepower with turbos, thought about fueling, cooling, chassis/drivetrain, engine upgrades needed to turbo this build?
Correction, fuel consumption of a v12, the price of a Lamborghini in apex seals and monthly rebuild materials BUT you have an engine that revs like a street bike. That's a win, I guess?..
yes, that's a win. definitely IF my calculation is not wrong, for 15 years engine rebuild every 75K = 5 years = 750$ X 3 =3000$ oil, maintenance, tax, gas, etc= 5250$ (15 years) service=1000$ per year = 1000 x 15 = 15000$ 23250$ for 15 years, that's not too bad
The sad part is, rotary engines get rebuilt MUCH sooner than that. They need new apex seals(complete tear down) about every 15K my friend. The one in this video probably gets rebuilt after every few races. There's a reason these engines are extinct. They're fragile, unreliable and have worse efficiency than a 2 stroke running a 5:1 mix. I just thought I'd inform you from a stand point of someone who has worked majorly with them. They are wicked cool, sound amazing and can make great power while revving to the moon. But a complete engine teardown every 10-15K miles isn't most people's budget. Sure, you can wait to 25K or longer but you'll burn a quart or 2 of oil every mile. They are horrible engines in reality, though us gear heads love them for what they are and what they can do. You should also be aware there's probably 75K or more alone invested in the one in this video. Not a really good power output for the money spent. 75K in the engine alone would get you well into the 1000 range in your other import cars, be it Subaru, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota etc. You'd have a 1000 if not 1200 hp car for this amount of money. Though it would not be as cool as this 6 rotor.
Damn I love the way rotaries growl. This is an awesome engine, well done. But... This is also probably the worst waste of power I have ever seen. 6 rotors... in an rx4? Poor aerodynamics, a car meant for luxury/touring, and definitely not meant for sporting purposes. It's awesome, but it just seems... wasteful. There's no way that car is stable any faster than 80-90mph. On top of that, it seems that only a fraction of the power is actually reaching the ground. Notice that whenever he even touches the throttle, up the ass of the car starts to come out. Would have been awesome to have seen this engine in a chassis that could have actually utilized such power.
In response to an email, PPRE assured me that there is a combustion event for every 60 degrees of rotation. 360/6=6 This is a non-mirrored eccentric. PPRE's explanation for the lower frequency is their 6-3-2-1 exhaust header configuration. I still say the 4 rotor sounds better.
I just got a good idea! Build a 6-rotor not unlike this one, but have each rotor with its own turbocharger connected to its own exhaust (the intake and exhaust are almost continuous) so each turbo is independent of the others. Now you will have consistent boost even at low rpm as not much pressure is needed to turn a small light turbo.
not much pressure is needed to spin a small turbo but you're also not going to get much air out of one rotor. Overall it would be more efficient and MUCH cheaper to go with a twin turbo setup.
But, having multiple cylinders exhaust into a single turbo increases the temperature and makes ball bearings unsuitable. I meant to use relatively large low-pressure turbos for this, so they produce some boost at low speed.
If that's not Ervil Edenbaker's Popcorn Popper I don't know what it is. Who ever said that's gonna take the V8's is crazy! But I can't say anything but " Wow!" to the work that got put in and effort to make something that is truly amazing. Got to give it to Mr.Wankel too though.

What's your guys rev limiter at? It doesn't sound nearly as good as the 4 rotor cars on youtube and I think part of the reason is that you aren't revving to nearly the same RPM range. When those 4 rotors rev way up they sound very similar to the V10 F1 cars from before the V6 turbo days, and they just sound amazing. I want to hear the 6 rotor at that range.
