What's Shenmue VHS (Subtitled 1080p60)

- Full length capture of the What's Shenmue VHS wich was released in Japan around mid 1999.
It contains a lot of early Beta footage with lots of unused stuff and scenes from Shenmue II.

Translation and English subtitles by Switch from Shenmue Dojo. Spanish subtitles by IlDucci. German subtitles by me.
Played back on a Panasonic NV-FS200 S-VHS recorder on Edit level with TBC on and captured via S-Video at the full 60 frames per second. The captured footage has been color corrected, optimized and upscaled to 1080p. Please keep in mind that even after all that it's still an old VHS tape with all its limits.
It's always so interesting to see that even before Shenmues Release, Shenmue III was basically done. Makes you wonder how much of Shenmue III was complete before cancellation.
I love how it says "SHENMUE" on the top and then "SHAMU" at the bottom when the logo is shown. lol
Massive respect for providing this! Like What's Shenmue always interesting to so how the game changed in its development.
Thanks Bluemue! That bit at 19:10 with the drunk guy smashing Ryo's head at night is incredibly disturbing, that goodness they left that part out of the game!
+FlagshipFighter They didn't scrap this, it's still in the game. If you go along the back street while you're trying to find a way into Warehouse #8 it will happen every night.

+James Reiner No, it's exactly the same in the final game, it doesn't cut out any earlier. And after failing you'll see that Fuku-san brought you back home. Greatest shame in the game. :D
This game was way ahead of his time.

The "mm" at 2:22 is actually a word that exists in both Chinese and Japanese. People say that instead of "OK" or "yeah". Basically like mhmm in English but shorter and always affirmative.
I always find it weird that ShenHua spoke Japanese perfectly... Did they give an explanations in the Japanese version? Like my Grand Father used to have Japanese Friends or something?
+gabriel montreuil It's possible that Ryo knows how to speak Chinese but not really read it. He was able to communicate with everyone in Hong Kong and China (Guilin), so that's my theory at least.
I think I read somewhere that Yu Suzuki wanted to dub people in HK in Cantonese, so that further reinforces that.

But no wait... it doesn't make sense... Since at one point Joy Speak in Chinese... And Ryo doesn't understand her...
Its either Ryo Speak poorly Chinese and the Main Character speak Fluent Japanese... or that they didn't care because its only one of the Best Video game of all time! lol
gabriel montreuil Yeah, I've also thought about that. The closest thing I can think of is that Joy was actually speaking Japanese, but with an extremely thick accent to the point where Ryo can't understand her. And so, they made it in Chinese so the players can't understand her similarly to how Ryo can't understand her as well.

Incredible to see this! But hold on, we can hear cicadas in the background while Ryo is buying a cola at 21:30 ?? If you played the game all the way through to summer, are they really there? I'm not sure it's even possible due to the "bad ending"? So much mystery in Shenmue ☺️
