The first time I heard this song as a kid, and that that chorus harmony got me, I had goosebumps hit me like a truck. I miss this country music, it was wonderful at the time.
I can understand how you can get the sense it’s about a jilted lover; but in fact, it was about his brother’s death as a young man. And given these lyrics, “A note on the table that told me goodbye. It said you’d grown weary of living a lie. Your love has ended but mine still remains. But nobody answers when I call your name“; a presumption is it was a death at his own hand. A sadly sweet song with a lot of heart & heartbreak.
Vince Gill does not have one bad song out this one of his best songs and it reminds me of when I got married the first time and me and my husband had a big fight about watching my daughter and he and his friends were drinking and smoking weed with my daughter was in her high chair he came home and we were not there we got a apartment and when he game home everything was gone
That's Patty Loveless who would help her cousin get through "Go Rest High on That Mountain" at George Jones' funeral, doing harmony in the blurred background.
Pattyy Loveless, who harmonized with Vince here, sang a tearjerker of her own that you should listen to--"How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye." I advise you to have Kleenex for that one!
I loved country music in the '90s. Vince Gill was one of my favorite country singers and this was probably my favorite of his songs. His voice is gorgeous.
He has such a gorgeous voice but he is also very funny and he and Rodney Crowell did a song called It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chewed Your Ass Out All Day Long.
Totally agree, I love the performance with Allison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs! So well done, such an inspirational song! How great is it that you can write a song for your brother, and inspire so many people with it?!
Teresa, you are partly correct. He originally started the song about Keith Whitley's death but when his brother passed, he finished it and sang it at his service. No matter though, it's a beautiful song and tribute to one's loved one.
Vince is married to pop Christian singer Amy Grant. He has a sweet song When My Amy Prays. He was in a band in the 70’s called Pure Prairie League. Check them out. There’s some good songs
There were so many great country tunes that came out in the 90's. Vince did a lot of different types, they weren't all sad. "Liza Jane" is a fun one... He has a voice that is smooth as gold!
Actually this was his first hit song but it was a long time coming. When Mark Knopfler invited him to join Dire Straits, Vince declined saying he wanted to give his solo career more time. It was after that When I Call Your Name was released....and the rest is history. But before then he had other songs released on RCA that did ok, just none that were the break through big hit he was looking/hoping for. I think that's when he switched record labels and joined MCA. Maybe they had him focus on a different sound or style than before or just he was writing better songs. I listened to his earlier stuff and liked those songs too. Some of them are my favorite songs by Vince. Plus he had songs on the radio when he was with Pure Prairie League.
it was fine to hear your explanation of the lyrics, bit I would rather have heard your thoughts on the quality of the singers voice, the musical arrangement, the story-telling quality of the lyrics, the instrumentals performed by the piano and the pedal steel, and so forth.
The music video was directed by Bill Pope and premiered in mid-1990. Although Patty Loveless sang the song with Gill in live performances, she did not appear in the video. Instead, country singer Matraca Berg appeared, lip-syncing to Loveless's vocals.[3]
How many times I found myself sitting in some old honky tonk years ago when I would hear this song begin to play on the jukebox. It was a feeling that transcends all time and space. Truly a magical moment. Pure country gold my friends.
I love watching black listen to blue-eyed soul for the first time, you gave us such a tradition of beautiful soul music I love you hearing our for the first time.
that's his wife Amy Grant singing the low harmony.... she said the first time she heard him "he sounds like a girl" Vince is a great musician and stylist and even a better man
This is a sad song just goes to show you don't miss someone until their gone. So don't take someone you truly love for granted. Always be thankful a spend some time with you them.
Great song. That's Patty Loveless singing back up for him, who is a wonderful singer herself and has a lot of great songs, like Timber I'm Falling In Love and Don't Toss Us Away. I love the duet that Vince Gill did with Reba McIntyre called The Heart Won't Lie.
OMG ! YOU REALLY FELT THIS SONG ,.good for you ,to be able to connect with a song of this magnitude is to know what music is all about ,you impressed me very much . thank you ... am now a subscriber .......
This was produced back when the country music machine still had a soul of sorts.😉 Vince Gill is a living legend that still writes and plays music in several different genres. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. This song and Pocket Full of Gold are two of my all-time favorites by him, and both feature backup vocals by his good friend and also a country music legend in her own right, Patty Loveless (Patricia Ramey).😍 Great reaction India!!😁👍🎵🎶🎵
I love Vince & his voice , he is such a sweetheart , He is married to Amy Lee Grant & she sings Christian pop songs but also did a few crossover songs that are purely pop back in the 80's , The lady in the vid doing backup vocals is another country star , Patti Loveless , enjoy her music as well.
Patty does do harmonies on this song but she doesn't actually appear in the video. That's another Country performer Matraca Berg, who is a singer-songwriter who had written or co-written songs recorded by several Country artists (including Patty Loveless) with probably Strawberry Wine by Deana Carter the most well known.
If there is anyone who could bring ya to tears or get goose bumps with there voice it would be Vince Gill!
did not realize till just now how pure his voice is
How about the late Vern Gosdin? Check out " Chiseled in Stone " .
Yup, dude has a wonderful and distinct voice. I have been a fan since his Pure Prairie League days. Great stuff...
I know they're long gone, but maybe you should listen to Vern Gosdin, Gary Stewart, and of course, George Jones.
Or his wife Amy Grant.
Voice of an angel
Loved your reaction. Thx for sharing.
Vince has one of the smoothest voices in country music
Please listen to Vince Gill with Pure Prairie League on " Let Me Love You Tonight"!
I love how you react to videos. Subscribed
This is the music I grew up on. This is real country music
Great song.
Bless you
Vince has one of the purest tenor voices in music
The first time I heard this song as a kid, and that that chorus harmony got me, I had goosebumps hit me like a truck. I miss this country music, it was wonderful at the time.
Love the awesome harmony of Patty Loveless
Patty Loveless is singing backup and she's great too
I can understand how you can get the sense it’s about a jilted lover; but in fact, it was about his brother’s death as a young man. And given these lyrics, “A note on the table that told me goodbye. "That would suck". I lol'ed
That's a great song
Vince Gill and Patty Loveless in a duet is priceless. They are the best country pair
Their voices blend so well. They both have sung harmony for many performers.
Anything with Pattie Lovelace is a good match...
@@TheFarmerfitz Yessss, I love Patty. My favorite song of hers "Timber, I'm Falling in Love"
@@sammybeck7794 That is an Awesome song...
@Peter Rahill I was like, uh, what? It took a little bit to finally kick into my brain. That was a good one BTW
He was also in the rock band Pure Prairie League
Vince Gill has the perfect voice for this heartbreak song.
Heart wont lie is omg
Vince is a special talent. Great singer songwriter and one hell of a guitar player.
This song made Vince a star.
You probably don't like country "twang" but Vince Gill has a wonderful voice. Also a fabulous guitarist.
Go rest high on the mountain is one of his best, if not the best. This song is my second favorite by Vince. Love Vince
Vince has always been one of my favorites. His voice and guitar sound are legondary. Voice of an angel.
His voice is the purist voice , his talent is beyond most artists dreams.
Vince gill pocket full of gold... go rest high on that mountain!! Love you!!
This is an official " Cry in your beer song" sad Country song !!
Pattyy Loveless, who harmonized with Vince here, sang a tearjerker of her own that you should listen to--"How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye." I advise you to have Kleenex for that one!
To this day I cannot listen to that song without bawling. Even thinking about it now is making me tear up.
Patty Loveless was not the background singer in this version. It was Dawn Sears who sang with Vence early on.
Patty
Beautiful song and great singers
I loved country music in the '90s. Vince Gill was one of my favorite country singers and this was probably my favorite of his songs. His voice is gorgeous.
He has such a gorgeous voice but he is also very funny and he and Rodney Crowell did a song called It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chewed Your Ass Out All Day Long.
I love this man and his music. 1 of the very few that still sings real country music.
That song can squeeze a tear out of my shielded heart.
Love Vince gill he sounds wonderful
That man can actually sing, his songs are beautiful and the lyrics make sense.
That can’t be said about a lot of today’s music.
This guy is so talented, and he has a HUGE catalog. I think you’ll like him. He used to be in a Country/Rock band in the 70s, Pure Prairie League.
@UThink UCan, yeah and that was a good choice with Glenn being gone.
Pure prairie League was his first number one this was his first solo hit
Dolly and Vince perform I will always love you
Another good song by Vince Gill is Pocket Full of Gold
He has one hell of a voice. Sounds amazing 👏
Vince Gill has the voice of an angel ❤
Love Vince Gill. ❤️❤️React to Him Look High on this Mountain. He wrote it for his bro that died. I had this played at my Dads funeral. 😢
Totally agree, I love the performance with Allison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs! So well done, such an inspirational song! How great is it that you can write a song for your brother, and inspire so many people with it?!
My mom had it played for her dad's (my grandfather) funeral and it tears her up.
Teresa, you are partly correct. He originally started the song about Keith Whitley's death but when his brother passed, he finished it and sang it at his service. No matter though, it's a beautiful song and tribute to one's loved one.
Played at my grandfathers funeral. Beautiful song, but even today, 11 years later, I can’t even listen to it anymore.
I also played this at my Father's Funeral, Dec.26th 1995 Go rest high on that Mountain James Edward Gaynor from Baltimore Maryland.
How you got so many haters? I don’t understand this is awesome
Oh! That steel guitar!
I could listen to him sing all day ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The pedal steel is the icing on the cake for this classic.
Played by none other than "Papa" John Hughey. RIP
This was one of the first songs I learned on the steel! I miss john hughey!!😥
Jeff Tappan For sure!
Yes it is!!!!!
Damn right it is.

There were so many great country tunes that came out in the 90's. Vince did a lot of different types, they weren't all sad. "Liza Jane" is a fun one... He has a voice that is smooth as gold!
One More Last Chance
I'm a rock musician. But this guy is a incredible guitarist, singer, mandolin, and currently touring with the Eagles who are also legendary.
I've seen the Eagles LIVE...love Joe Walsh, and Vince Gill! It really doesn't get any better than these guys.
This was his first single to hit the radio...that’s all it took! Then the video hit and women went crazy...also, let’s hear it for Patty Loveless!
Actually this was his first hit song but it was a long time coming. When Mark Knopfler invited him to join Dire Straits, Vince declined saying he wanted to give his solo career more time. It was after that When I Call Your Name was released....and the rest is history. There is a very old joke that asks what do you get when you play country music backwards? You get your wife, house, dog and car back.
it was fine to hear your explanation of the lyrics, bit I would rather have heard your thoughts on the quality of the singers voice, the musical arrangement, the story-telling quality of the lyrics, the instrumentals performed by the piano and the pedal steel, and so forth.
You need to listen to Go Rest High on That Mountain.
India, Now you've heard old time country
I love Vince Gill his voice is so soothing.
Love love love Vince Gill!!!❤
I lived that song many years ago, I still miss her 20 years later still the tears fall
Allison Kraus - Ghost in this House; A very chilling song.
Vince Gill has one of the most beautiful voices in country music there is AND some o f the most beautifully written songs too...
Lol..."thats a damn shame". Too cute.
Vince Gill has one of the most amazing voices so much emotion in his range he is an incredible guitarist also as they say the man can play.
The backing vocal is so impossibly good on this.
He's also one of the best guitar players around. A multi talented individual.
The music video was directed by Bill Pope and premiered in mid-1990. Although Patty Loveless sang the song with Gill in live performances, she did not appear in the video. Instead, country singer Matraca Berg appeared, lip-syncing to Loveless's vocals.[3]
You should really listen to "I Still Believe in You" one of my favorite country songs and most people would sat is Vince Gill's best
How many times I found myself sitting in some old honky tonk years ago when I would hear this song begin to play on the jukebox. It was a feeling that transcends all time and space. Truly a magical moment. Pure country gold my friends.

Vince Gill. A pocket full of gold.
I always think of Pocket Full of Gold as being the flip side of this....
This is a sad song just goes to show you don't miss someone until their gone. So don't take someone you truly love for granted. Always be thankful a spend some time with you them.
Vince and Patty loveless best high harmony in country music
Love his pocket full of gold Try some Clint Black . Shenandoah
Great song. That's Patty Loveless singing back up for him, who is a wonderful singer herself and has a lot of great songs, like Timber I'm Falling In Love and Don't Toss Us Away. I love the duet that Vince Gill did with Reba McIntyre called The Heart Won't Lie.
Vince is also one of the best guitarists in the world. Incredible talent.
Sometimes sad songs are good songs. If I'm feelin down, I'd rather hear something like this vs. "don't worry be happy"
OMG ! YOU REALLY FELT THIS SONG ,.good for you ,to be able to connect with a song of this magnitude is to know what music is all about ,you impressed me very much . thank you ... am now a subscriber .......
Another good one is Vince Gill & Reba Mcentire's "The Heart Won't Lie"
