25 years ago front row on the 50. Thanks for the memories. Blessings.
Ah - worth it for a glance of Gareth Chilcott. Thank you
This is pretty much every try England scored in the 1980s, isn't it? 😀
Genius from Carling at 1:43!
RIP Mike Slemen.
A true giant of the game.
I was in the North stand at the Scotland match, Woodward touched down right in front of me: a try you wouldn't see nowadays.
@chanctonbury63 It was Huw Davies' first cap.
That clive woodward try was breathtaking.
They used to have some half decent backs in those days.
Back when England's selectors were professional.
At the training session before the 1981 match in Dublin, Blakeway and Smart, the England props, were asked who they thought should be the replacement prop (only one allowed then).
Smart replied, and Blakeway concurred, that they should NOT select Austin Sheppard of Bristol, as though he was an excellent loose head, he was incapable of playing on the tight head: what was needed was someone capable of playing on either side.
At the end of the session the team was announced: Sheppard was the replacement prop.
Cue the match day, and after 4 minutes Blakeway had to leave the field, injured, meaning Smart had to swap to the tight head, a position at which he admitted to being a complete novice. Somehow England won 6-10.
It was Gordon Sargent, not Austin Sheppard
Yeah England were the whipping team back then apart from a GS in 1980 but Wales lost at Twickenham having scored two tries to England’s four penalties with Paul Ringer getting sent off for Wales in the first half .
England actually scored 3 penalties in that game against Wales to win 9-8
By the end of the 1980's Will Carling was captain and had found a unique way of getting England to be successful (Carling's version of 10 man rugby).
Come on Scotland
Yeah, them and all their World Cup finals...
