@@margaretwilson8736 That is a claim which is often thrown around, but I don't think it bears out statistically. Gender neutral games have been getting mass produced long before most of these professional gamers were even born. The early infancy of video games were creations such as Pac-man, Tetris and Pong. Games that had no gender bias whatsoever. And whilst there are inarguably games which cater more towards the stereotypical 'male interests', there have always been a plethora of gender neutral alternatives or even specific female catered games. In any event, the idea that there are 'male marketed' games and 'female marketed' games is somewhat of a dated concept given that both men and women can enjoy and partake in each-others interests. Because they are not encouraged to crochet and even discouraged by possible phrases like “crocheting is not meant for men.” Similarly women in gaming are harassed for being a woman when they finally enter the community. Mostly, women were not encouraged from the house to indulge in games or more violent geared activities like playing with nerf guns because it is deemed masculine. Also most people in this comment section are entirely misogynistic and refuse to acknowledge simple things like were they given a PC or an Xbox/PS when they were a kid. My parents wouldn’t even think about buying me a gaming laptop. Most (young) pros are starting when they are starting 10-13. @@nabisuke In this case i’m actually not sure if it’s only biological differences. When the pros today were young, barely any girl played video games , especially more competitive ones. If the pros are one in a million talents, it’s probably not gonna be one of the few girls that play. Why is it always gaming? I mean, check out the TOP chess players. You won't find much gender diversity there either. So, evidently, the problem isn't from gaming industry/community itself. But it's just easier to criticise gamers for being "immature", like this video does, than chess players because of the stereotypes.
some of the best male chess players in the world treat women in chess the exact same way especially when they lose to them because they all have egos and cry when they lose to girls, thus women dont want to compete when they face unfair scrutiny
Women are still told that what matters is their appearance instead of their minds. To have more diversity we will need to wait for 50 years until mentality really changes
@@mississipi1103 I totally agree that this is a problem. But this problem isn't somehow inherent to gaming. It's a larger societal problem and attributing it exclusively to gaming community as this video does will create nothing but animosity.

A couple of things here... 1. BBC is assuming that just as many women play competitive games as men. Ive never to my knowledge raced against a woman on GTS. Ive had R6S since launch and maybe spoke to 4 women in that whole time. Female gamers tend to play single player games like animal crossing or dark souls. The online game i played in which i saw the most females was ESO. A none competitive game. And even then the ratio was like for every 1 female there was 70 males. The women here and treated as just another team member or clan member. No extra help us given to them but also no unwarranted grief either. Wow scary thought BBC but its almost like they are seen as equals by their peers. Wow BBC huh, mind-blowing! 2. The reality of being a pro gamer is sitting in a room, being unsociable, "pottering" for want of a better phrase and completely dedicating (usually unhealthy) yourself to your gaming betterment. Girls are far more sociable and don't hide away like that to put that much extreme time in. 3. Im sure girls get abuse online and yes it will be horrible but don't you realise men say that stuff to men. Being female is just a characteristic, e.g. if a mans characteristic was he is a geordie then he would get geordie related abuse. ( i am and i do) thats just the nature of aggressive competition. It isnt personal or even intentionally sexist and is forgotten about by the person saying it 3 seconds after its said. 4. Have you seen the disproportionate split of the sexes based on videogame streaming? There its females who earn the most, have the biggest sponsors and the most views. Is anything being done to increase male streaming? - No. 5. I know the BBC would love to think of gamers as horrible incel types who hate everyone, aren't welcoming and dont help. It fits the BBC narrative. But in reality whole communities have developed who interact, help and communicate without any prejudice at all. There is banter sure but no more is given by anyone than they receive. 6. Yes the BBC found some female gamers here but how many male gamers did they have to filter out to find them? Thats like eating 2000 bowls of soup but focusing on the 1 bowl which came to the table cold. Shouldn't the question be "are men and women different or literally exactly the same in every aspect of personality, performance, strength, social skills, priority assigning, ability to give birth, etc"? If the answer is no then we need to recognise that men and women are different. Almost like men are from Mars and women from Venus.
Lol. "Get good." Idk how old you are, I'm 26, but I remember in my teens that was literally the slogan you'd hear everywhere. I had an MRI not long ago. The entire team was women. Same as when I went to the blood clinic, nerve specialist and physiotherapist. Short answer, they have better things to do.
They did, although to be fair, they were basically used as a publicity stunt. I don't remember the precise details, but essentially, the organization behind the team got rid of their existing players, but still had a spot in one or more tournaments. So instead of trying hard to find high level players again, they just hired a team of female mid rank support mains and let them play in these tournaments. Obviously they get great publicity from this. Hell, they were probably happy about those records. The girls sucked ass, but nobody was ever in denial about how bad they were compared to the actual pros. This is more a case of women being used as a publicity stunt by a greedy company rather than women being given their shot at the big leagues only to fall short. They might have advertised it as some feminist move (no clue if they did or not), but it's definitely not why they had these girls play.
Very superficial reporting on an interesting topic. No mention of physical differences between male and female gamers. From memory (sports physiology subjects were a while ago now), the average difference in reaction times between men and women is something like 12%. However, with training (professional athletes) the gap grows to something like 75%.
And there's no mention of interest, either. 50% of gamers may be women, but that is including mobile games, puzzle games, sim games, etc... I have so many female friends who only own a Switch for Animal Crossing. The kinds of games that you can properly run eSports for are significantly male dominated for no other reason than personal choice. Yes, some women want to play those games - good for them. But most women don't, and that's okay.
"big ambition" doesn't equal wins Don't let it get to heart Jesus Christ Why would a major team org like TEAM Liquid hire a women only team when they can hire a male team and get much much more money from more wins/higher placement?
I think the biggest thing we have to remember is...groups of woman are very recently entering competitive fields whether it be actual career wise or ESPECIALLY online esports and gaming wise. Like it or not (and im not saying its a big factor now) in the last 50 years, woman have been belittled or pushed to not seek higher positions or even competitiveness for this exact reason. Like most things, its a male dominated field and since esports to this level is so new. We won't be getting either an all girl professional team or even a girl in the winning team for at least a few years. And even then its going to take a lot of courage from online harassment woman definitely face in gaming to get to that point.
It is no easier being a dude in competitions like this. Dudes trash-talk each other at least as much as they trash-talk girls. A lot of the supposedly misogynistic insults that women get in these games are actually also used regularly by males against other males. Men are just as aggressive towards each other if not much more so compared to how they treat women. They are compelled to be more aggressive towards each other than towards women because they perceive each other as a much greater threat and they perceive women as some kind of joke in this context. Like seriously, you think women should get a lot of support and encouragement and coaching to become successful at this??? Men get all the opposite all the time from when they first start gaming to when they get to the top of their ranks, and they do not complain about not getting help or whatever. They keep fighting to become successful, and they succeed because they build up their fighting spirit. You cannot expect to beat everyone else and rise to the top of the ranks if you expect others to help you and essentially give you your victories in games in which the point is to take victories away from your opponents rather than give victories to them. If support and help are what you are looking for, then you are not a fighter, you do not have a fighting spirit, and competitive games like this in particular are indeed not for you because the whole point here is being a fighter and being aggressive.
@@nerdvision3587 what women face is getting harassed, not just dealing w/ trash talk. no one gives af whether someone calls u bad, but its straight up impossible for guys to belittle other guys in the same way guys can belittle women. in a 5v5 there might be 1 girl playing, and the whole game she'll get sexist comments and creepy requests. only way to start to know what it feels like is if you were in a lobby with 9 other girls for the rest of your life.
This piece misses the mark because it's focusing on the small percentage of female gamers in semi-pro positions that still need to grind to earn their way to the top. These women are doing well for where they are at the moment, and I sincerely hope they keep improving in order to get on a stage. Nothing is preventing them but their own work ethic, they absolutely can do it. Instead, I think it would be a better question to ask about the inhibiting factors that discourage more females from entering a competitive scene or video game at all. This video mentions that nearly 50% of gamers are girls currently, which is true overall. But ask how many of those games that women are playing have thriving competitive scenes? Unfortunately not many. You'll find that in the more competitive focused genres such as MOBA, FPS, Sports, etc that the gender disparity is massive. The reason we have less women in high levels of esports is because there are less women in those scenes in the first place. What can that be attributed to? Many combined factors I feel. For one, boys have definitely had a leg up on girls in the past when it came to getting a head start on training mechanics, as video games in the 90's and early 2000's tended to be heavily marketed towards boys. That of course has changed today for the better, hence why we have something of a 50/50 split now. But girls during that time simply weren't being introduced to shooters and other competitive titles, whereas boys were steadily playing and improving their aiming & movement at them. As a result whenever a girl would attempt to learn to play a game like Halo, they would often be coming in completely new to the fundamentals that boys would already have learned skill at. This I believe is a big reason for the trend of girls tending to either not play those games, or play them but in support oriented roles that allow circumventing some of those mechanics (e.g Mercy in OW). When it comes to education and parenting too (in the US and UK atleast), girls tend to be taught to not be as competitively driven as boys. Boys are usually encouraged to be aggressive and to compete in physical activities, whereas girls seem to be socially conditioned to be more caring, considerate and nurturing. Inherently, I would say boys just tend to be raised better suited for esports. Biology also may play a role in this, what with how testosterone works, but I'm not particularly knowledgeable in that regard. Overall it's possible that most women just aren't interested in these competitive titles as a result. (As a side note, those female traits as well may also play into their willingness to play roles in video games that are unpopular, which are again, healers). Toxicity is touched on briefly in this video, and it is worth mentioning. I feel for the women who do venture onto the cesspool of online matchmaking in their game of choice, only to be met with specific vitriol aimed at their gender. Sure, as a guy you're no stranger to someone calling you shit, but it's NEVER based on your gender. I've certainly never been called shit at a game because I'm male. Females tend to be specifically targeted for the sheer fact of being female. "We have a girl, we lost" is a sad, yet semi-common thing frequently thrown out. It can easily be found anywhere on UA-cam, the rampant amount of sexism from basement dwellers. This amount of sheer invalidation can be really damaging to the confidence, and can entirely discourage women from wanting to continue playing. Likewise, the fear of reinforcing this shitty stereotype can prevent women from taking the risks to improve. Women may feel like they cannot practice new roles or try to work on more intensive mechanics in certain titles because A) they don't want to be harassed for their choice of role, or B) they don't want to have a terrible game despite the fact they're learning, proving the "women are bad at video games" idea. ----- In short, women that do successfully reach a semi-pro state are clearly as good as their peers. If they keep the grind up and can defeat their male competitors, then they're plenty capable of reaching a grand final. It's everything before that I feel that would warrant better discussion and examination.
I dont understand why people dont understand that theres 1 young girl playing games 16h a day for every 1000 boys doing same, ofc its gonna be mostly guys playing at the top, end of the entire argument. Playing games is lonely af, guys thrive more in lone wolf activities and can evan find happiness and satisfaction in tht, women do better in social environments. This just shows how immature people are, u cant evan have a discussion on this without being called women hater lol
I'd like to add something to your comment. You rightfully point out the difference in toxicity male and female players face. This has a compounding effect with another issue imo. Because there are already fewer female players (like you said, games used to be mostly marketed to boys, competitive drive etc.), not only do they face it more consistently, but every girl who stops playing a game due to toxicity (which is probably more likely than guys stopping for that reason), is a much bigger relatively loss of playerbase when you separate it by gender. If 1000 guys and 10 girls play a game, if 5 guys and 1 girl quit due to toxicity, then the guys lost 0.5% of their players, while the girls lost 10%. So yeah, the toxicity is a problem in and of itself, but because there are already so much fewer girls in the competitive games, each one that doesn't pull through the river of shit means there are that much fewer girls player at all. What it means for competition is also pretty obvious. A larger pool of competitors means a higher level at the top. Look at ice skating. The Netherlands is a tiny country, but ice skating is so popular there among pretty much everyone, which causes their pro ice skaters to be of a high level as well, because there's a larger pool of people to pick the best from, and it makes it more likely for those with true talent and drive to come into contact with the sport in the first place. There could be hundreds of girls that have the talent, mindset, work ethic and competitive drive to reach the level of a high ranking DOTA player, but they just never come into contact with the game, or if they do, quit due to toxicity long before they realize their potential. This happens to men too of course, but there's so many more men playing and pulling through that a lot of the best players do rise to the top. In the end, it does boil down to a very simple observation. Esports is a sports scene where women ought to be on the same level as the men as far as biological advantage goes (as in, they can compete realistically, unlike in something like boxing or sprinting). Despite this, there's hardly any women competing on the same level as the top men. The solution is never to artificially raise them up, but it is a weird discrepancy that likely has some causes that can and should be resolved. It's like looking at the Bechdel test. There's nothing wrong with an individual work of fiction failing that test, but when 90+ percent of works released in a decade fail that test, while they do pass the inverse (where men are the subject), then there is likely some societal cause at the base of the discrepancy, and people should be aware of that so that it can be resolved.

I think it’s so silly when people say only girls get harassed in multiplayer game lobbies. Anytime I’ve ever used voice chat in multiplayer games I get a bunch of homophobic slurs racist slurs thrown at me. It’s not just a women thing but you’re making it that way to try to push a narrative. People on the Internet and in video game lobbies are just toxic because they’re competitive and that’s just how it is. The reason they’re making jokes about going back to the kitchen is because that’s their way to get under a girl skin. They know that because they’re playing against a girl that’s the thing that they have to say to piss them off. Just like when they hear a black guy on voice chat the thing they know is going to piss them off is a racist slur. This is not just a girl thing stop pretending it is.

Contradiction after contradiction! Nobody will ever allow anyone to win easily! It is a competition. If you know that you are able to get under the skin with an observation, you will use it! Man or woman ... psychological toughness is part of sport!
Except a lot of the time it's your own teammates who make these shitty comments. Tough luck if you're a man, but goddamn the shit women get thrown at them. I've shared a team with plenty of female players on games like Counter Strike, and they get some serious bullshit thrown at them even compared to a guy with shitty aim like me. There's a huge difference between getting some trash talk from the opponents and your own teammates saying "girl on team, we lose" after they hear a girl's voice at the start of the match. And once or twice shouldn't be an issue, people will be toxic anyway. But some girls get this shit every single game. I've heard from too many female gamers who just stopped using voice chat and changed their gamertags to something masculine or neutral just so they wouldn't get comments like these every single game. So yeah, within reason, trash talk the opponents as much as you want, but you can't ignore that this shit goes beyond just trash talk. It's toxic teammates turned up to the maximum. And that in games with already fewer female players, meaning not only do they never get respite from this shit, but whenever one does just quit the game entirely, it's a bigger loss relatively speaking.
Trash talk is experienced by everyone in every type of sport. I have used it to give me a mental edge over another player. I have had good trash talkers get in my head. It can be funny as hell and also make you so angry you could scream and yes sometimes I do. I would have it no other way. Please do not bring censorship and cancel culture to video games or any other sport over trash talking.
Trash talking is fun. But females get harassment. I don’t turn on my mic in games because if I do so I get rape threats and even my teammates say extremely disgusting things that they wouldn’t say to a male player. People leave the lobby when they know I’m a female. They keep on asking me my insta id. When this thing happens to you for 5 hours every day, you’ll get to know what real toxicity is. Most females aren’t good at video games it’s just that simple it has nothing do with what’s between your legs. At the end of the day professional esports is a business skills takes precedence over your gender or race.
Because they're generally not as interested in gaming as boys, and probably don't have as good reflexes.

Stop blaming men over every small problem you face and get good.
Lol. "Get good." Idk how old you are, I'm 26, but I remember in my teens that was literally the slogan you'd hear everywhere. If you're on multiplayer or in real life and you do poorly, or you complain about not being as good, people just say 'git good'. Now it's not about being good anymore. We have to force diversity in fields women aren't as interested in as men, and because we need to do that for whatever reason, they don't look at actual skill in women.
@@stewartmullings1552 Git Good? Didn't the all women eSports team have the record for fastest defeat in eSports history in lol?

Why try to fix a problem that doesn't exist? There are other areas where females are predominant
"big ambition" doesn't equal wins
Don't let it get to heart Jesus Christ
Why would a major team org like TEAM Liquid hire a women only team when they can hire a male team and get much much more money from more wins/higher placement?
@@nerdvision3587 what women face is getting harassed, not just dealing w/ trash talk. no one gives af whether someone calls u bad, but its straight up impossible for guys to belittle other guys in the same way guys can belittle women.

because they dont play videogames and even if they do they rarely put in the 13h/day that is needed, there you go, I just saved you 6 min
-----
In short, women that do successfully reach a semi-pro state are clearly as good as their peers. If they keep the grind up and can defeat their male competitors, then they're plenty capable of reaching a grand final. It's everything before that I feel that would warrant better discussion and examination.
Really well thought out answer. Glad there's someone who actually took time to think about it instead of just saying "lol they suck that's why".
