  • In this Video we visited the Maori village of Ohinemutu which is located in Rotorua - Ōhinemutu Village was settled by the Ngāti Whakaue iwi (tribe), a sub-tribe of the Te Arawa waka (canoe) journeyed from the Pacific homeland of Hawaiiki to New Zealand around 1350AD. The explorers chose this location for their home due to its setting along the shores of Lake Rotorua and the abundant geothermal energy which was useful for cooking, bathing and heating.
Ngāti Whakaue gifted the land on which the city of Rotorua was built, and today the historic village, just 10 minutes’ walk from the Rotorua city centre, is still home to a few hundred descendants.
We were greeted by lovely locals that showed us around and even showed us new hot pools that have appeared in the zone and the traditional ovens where Maori cook their Hangi (Hāngī is a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven, called an umu.).
After the Maori village it was time to visit Kuirau park. Kuirau Park is free to visit and located within an easy walk from the city centre, just off Pukuatua and Ranolf streets. Parking is also free.
Several walkways take you through the park to see the crater lake, mud pools, hot springs, and a free thermal foot bath, all set in a beautifully manicured setting dotted with flower beds and native flora.
Kuirau Park is also great place to play and picnic, with barbecues, picnic tables, children's playground and toilets. If you visit on Saturday, you'll be lured by the wonderful aromas of the food vendors and the beautiful fresh produce at the farmer's market held every week from 6am to 1pm - perfect for breakfast or lunch!
We had the change to (not see much) due to the amount of steam that was coming from the very hot lakes. The smell is also interesting around Rotorua.
Our last stop in Rotorua was the Redwood forest, a forest with native New Zealand ferns and Californian Redwood Trees.

Just to help clarify what the old fella was saying:
As early as the 13th century, Māori sailed large canoes (waka) from Hawaiki (some believe this to be an old name for Ra'iatea in French Polynesia, but such information is hard to confirm) and landed in New Zealand.
It is believed there where 7 waka (though some suggest it is more likely to have been 7 waves or fleets of waka, over serval decades, maybe even centuries).
From these founding peoples came the iwi (tribes) that form the structure of Māori society.
Within each iwi are many hapū (clans or descent groups), each of which is made up of one or more whānau (extended families).
Some of the more well known iwi (ones I've heard of):
Ngāi Tahu (my iwi, so I am of Ngai Tahu descent), Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Ruanui, Whakatōhea, Te Ati Awa, Ngāti Tahu, Ngāi Te Rangi, and Tainui (consiting of: Hauraki, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Raukawa & Waikato).
That's a fairly simple over view of a complex concept, as each iwi has it own cloudy past.
E.g., my iwi, Ngai Tahu, also consist of the Ngati Mamoe (an iwi that was in the region that the Ngai Tahu moved into sometime in the seventeenth century) and the Waitaha (an all encompassing name for numerous for peoples that where there before the Ngati Mamoe).

There are over 100 Māori iwi (tribes) located all throughout New Zealand, Te Arawa is the main tribe in the area you guys visited with many sub-tribes in and around the city of Rotorua!

Public transportation is fine in the cities but in order to visit a lot of the main attractions you would need to drive or book a tour as there’s no public transportation going for example to Hobbiton. We would definitely recommend to organise your trip well 😉

Barries are for safety.. few years ago child lost their life and jump into the pool... it was deceiving because it did not look very hot or steamy so you don't know...

We have one, just we were filming with the phone as we didn’t expect to be using much of the sound but then the gentleman started talking and it was a shame if we didn’t have it on camera 🙃🙃
