AT 1:06:31, I believe that 2nd peak from the right is King Kong peak (from the movie shot on Kauai) . You can see King Kong's profile. You have a close-up of it again at 1:06:47. We spent Christmases on Kauai for many, many years. We stayed with friends who lived on the North Shore on Wainiha Powerhouse Road. The road is on the way to Ke'e Beach where you started on the Kalalau Trail. The green woven cordage you found on top the Sleeping Giant is actually a sacred maile lei. The old Hawaiian Kahuna's (priests) used to bind a married couple's hands together with a maile lei as a symbol of their union. It remains as a symbol of love and respect to this day, and is very hard to obtain because of the remoteness of where the plants are found. One year we were hiking on one of the muddy trails up to a small waterfall and pool, and we ran into actor Drew Barrymore and a friend coming back down. The road to the trail was really a muddy 4WD road, but Drew tried to drive it in one of the rental convertible passenger cars available on the island. Don't know if she made it. We passed her slipping and sliding around on our way out. Another of our friends lived on a completely private beach (Pila'a), also on the north shore. They were totally off the grid, and they had to have a 4WD truck to get there. The coral reef directly in front of their house was one of the finest, most pristine in the world and a fabulous diving and snorkeling spot. No one else had access to it. A greedy developer moved on top of a cliff overlooking one end of the beach and decided to bulldoze the top off the cliff for a housing development. Right after he bulldozed, one of those monstrous Kauai rainstorms came along and washed all the exposed mud down the cliff and onto the coral reef. Caused a huge environmental disaster and unending lawsuits because it killed off most of the live coral and associated sealife. There is a seamy underside to Kauai as well, which you didn't mention. That being said, it is relaxing by-and-large, and beautiful. Unbeatable seafood. Finally, for those still reading this comment, the secret to negotiating those muddy trails are rubber boots called jika-tabi walkers. They are Japanese in origin and have a split between the big toe and the second toe, an elastic top, and thick wool felt soles, perfect for walking in mud and gripping slippery boulders. You can buy them at any fishing/camping supply place on Kauai. We each have a pair, and they are probably 25 years old.
Right you are about the mountain! That's cool, thank you for sharing :) That's also good to know about the maile leis. It definitely felt significant finding one at the top of Sleeping Giant. Also, wow, that's cool you met Drew Barrymore! The friend with the coral reefs near their home sounds interesting. That's such a shame about the developer... I've heard similar things often happen on the west coast - people will build expensive houses up on cliffs that get washed away easily. Also, the jika-tabi look awesome, that would be really interesting to hike in. I'm surprised I never noticed them at the stores. Thank you so much for your comment - that was really interesting!
Just fyi there are no private beaches on Kauai, unfortunately some people try to make their beach access inaccessible (I’m not saying ur friends did so) but if someone can get to it, technically can use it. I live on Kauai. Thanks!
@@lindaannm1 Thanks for the info. I believe the keyword, as always, is "technically". Depends on how much stink-eye or worse one is prepared to deal with. lol
@@AdventureArchives The green cordage is actually a Ti leaf lei. Different plant and look than the maile. Thought you might appreciate knowing. Great video and mahalo for sharing!
Growing up in Hawaii, I always felt like God was hugging me, but living on the mainland for over 30 years now, your words at the end are so true... people can live Aloha spirit anywhere, they need only try.
We live here on Kauai - after loosing our home in California wildfire in 2020 ... you have captured perfectly the beauty, MAGIC and pure light of this magic isle.
I am enjoying watching these young people go to the places we were too old to navigate by the time of our first trip to Kauai! I am happy to see these areas up close! Thank you!😊
I've been to Hawaii so many times and i can say, I always find myself going to Kauai more then the other islands. I don't know why but i always fall in love with that island more and more each time.
Excellent episode! Although I’m a patreon, I was just able to watch it today, decided to do it on the living room at glorious 4K and soon enough my 89 year old grandma, Ema, joined me until the end!! she can’t understand english but she was worried about your shoes in the mud and was super impressed with the sunset and the stars, you have a new fan as I’m going to ask her to join me on all future episodes, thank you and greetings from Chile!!
What an adventure! Those conditions though were crazy for hiking can't believe you hiked through it, really like this style of sharing an adventure almost like a tv show
I love Hawaii! And Kauai is my 1 favorite island. We spent our honeymoon here in 2003. I had the privilege to see all the islands when I stayed in Hawaii for almost a year. 🙂
I had no idea there was scenery like this in Hawaii! I love how you are intrigued by the flora and fauna! That is the detail I find interesting. Thanks so much, you. Are very admirable young people
Thank you for sharing this beautiful beautiful high quality filmed video!!! I have visited Kauai and absolutely fell in love. Finding your UA-cam has been so valuable to me, thank you so much!🥰🥰🥰
This was much much needed after last week! I'm a horticulture student so i absolutely adore all of the plant information, those bits are some of my favorite parts (well besides all the rest). Also, it's totally worth watching all the way to the end!!
Very beautiful scenery. A pleasant surprise for me was getting to hear so much about the plants and vegetation :-) I actually got vertigo watching you climbing Sleeping Giant!
Aloha guys/gal.....I just saw your beautiful video as I had my breakfast. I too have been to Kauai but have not gone hiking there so this was just amazing to watch! Absolutely beautiful! I love the final phrase where you say that Paradise should be anywhere you would want it to be. I enjoyed the respect you had for it all, for the Hawaiian culture, the land, it's people and everything in between, especially coming from young folks like your selves. Stay well and Aloha from Waikiki Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i USA
You guys are the most talented group of UA-cam channels. I’ve said it before. The videography, photography, narration, banter on each trip & experience, you’re humor, philosophy, perfecto editing & the music. Oh the music is spectacular. You definitely have you’re own unique original sound & each instrumental piece is a custom sound for each video you create. Have you thought about putting together a sound track combining you’re music of each video? You should. I love you guys. You’re so down to earth & a pure joy to follow you’re recorded trips & hikes. What a wonderful life you guys are living. It’s obvious that you work very hard in between you’re adventures. Blessings to each of you 💖
Your reflection at the end of the video is beautiful and perfect. If it is one thing you take from the garden island, let it be the aloha spirit you can reflect towards others in your daily life in your actions, thoughts and words. This special island has been a life changer for me too.
I am a recent subscriber. I find the music and narative to be spot on! Combined with the humor and optimistic outlook each of you seem to have in our crazy world. Your videos are a perfect way to calm this busy world. Never doubt that what you do impacts people in a much deeper way than simple entertainment. Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for your comment! That means a lot to us, and it's always very humbling and inspiring to hear people feel affected by our videos. Thanks for subscribing, and thank you for watching :)
Mahalo nui loa!!! Excellent video...one of the best of each you do of my islands I was born & raised there. I've been on Kauai three times (I'm from Denmark, so it takes 30+ hours to get there) and I'm planning on going there soon. Best place I've ever been..
Great video! Lived on Kauai for 5 years growing up and I’d say the only thing you missed was doing sleeping giant for a sunrise and Puka dogs on the Westside. Loved watching this and reminiscing of the good ol days. Thanks for the memories!
Aloha! My husband was watching your video and the luau at Gaylord’s I brought back so much memories. When we met each other 17 years ago, he was a fire knife dancer and Tahitian drummer at the luau show there. We’d been dating for a short period of time when I went to see his last show at Gaylord’s because he was moving to the Big Island of Hawaii where I lived As a teenager, he performed at Smith’s Tropical Paradise (where you would have jumped on the boat to go up to the Fern Grotto). His sister had a luau show of her own there You did a great job showcasing the beautiful Garden Island, Kauai
I'm an old timer. My 1st time to Kauai there was no terminal and you deplaned on the tarmac. You walked over to some benches and the baggage handlers just drove your luggage to you and you just grabbed it off the trailer. The Kalalua trail was still relatively unknown and even more narrow and dangerous but awesome! Polihale is one of my favorite places there and was a locals only beach back then. In summer the sand there and at neighboring Barking Sands beach gets extremely hot and will burn your feet. Did you hear the barking as you walked through the sand? Sure it's getting crowded but what a beautiful place. As a fellow tree and plant lover it never gets old. Thanks for bringing back such great memories! My favorite Hawaiian island! You can still find some solitude over on Molokai if you know where to look. Mahalo!
Thanks so much for your comment! That's all really interesting. I never noticed the barking, but now I wish I could go back and check again. Maybe I'll have to review the footage. Glad we got to bring back some memories, and thanks so much for watching!
Stationed at Kekaha at the Naval Missile base 1961-1964. Barking Sands was the neatest beach around I thought, you could hear the dogs barking as the waves slapped down upon the beach. The Island had less tourists back then, but a beautiful Island to be on, had lot's of fun on Kauai.
I was there in august 2019 and I stayed in princville for 10 days I did all the trails you did and I was lucky to have sunny days ,!! One of the most beautiful island I have ever been was Kauai !! Thank you for video I enjoyed watching it a lot of memory’s
I have been stuck at home when we normally take summer vacation so I started watching your channel. My first video was Kawai and I loved it. I felt like I was on vacation too! I have started telling all of my friends how wonderful this chanel is! I also appreciate how kind you all are to each other and everyone else, thank you for the much needed vacations and kindness!
At 28:00 in elementary school we would call that plant with fuzzy purple flowers "sleeping grass"; many kids loved to play with those plants growing up lol.
Thank you for this video. I needed this to bring some peace into my soul and to believe again that this earth is a beautiful place and of all the universe we are lucky to live among such beauty. Again, I thank you for taking the time to make this video and share your experience as well as educating us on your knowledge of the flora 🙏
Really enjoying your Kauai experience. A high school friend and I drove across country after graduation in 1971 and he had an aunt and uncle who lived on Oahu who had a cabin up the Kauai Grand Canyon. We met a girl at the famous double waterfall and needed a drive to the Taylor Camp that was as far around the eastern side as you could drive. Many lived there in raised up individual plastic wrapped rooms.. they were without clothes on the beach. The island didn't like the Taylor camp (Richard burton's brother ?) .. they left and now it is a resort? Learning more from you all than Phil and I ever did. We almost walked off the cliff at the high land vista north end of the canyon.. not seeing well in the fog.
Excellent channel! Keep up the good work! Beautiful cinematography and great commentary. Feeling isolated during this COVID19 situation and found your content very refreshing!
All the talking about Guavas reminds me of my hometown in Mexico. My aunt had many kinds of trees, pomegranate, mango, guava, edible sea pods and God knows what else. I'm craving guavas now 😋
Howzit young travelers🤙🏽 At 1:10:47, I got deja vu watching your video on top of Sleepibg Giant. I used to live on Kamokila St. in the neighborhood where the round water tank is. I used to teach art at Kapa’a High back in 2010. I loved your approach to filming that sacred island. It embraced you all seeing how only the brave, uninformed, or truly loco people attempt Kalalau in the winter. The moments where you reflect on the universe let’s viewers know the island’s energy blessed you. Sort of feels like you earned your angel wings there, yeah? I used to have dreams on the mainland that I was shot and killed teaching in the mainland. Then, the State of Michigan sent me a letter that they had goofed and were taking deductions for two retirement accounts. It was hefty, so off to Michoacan I went. A cool Purepecha Indian brother said to get ready for the energy to come. I had cash left over and took my wife to paradise on Good Friday 2006, the last day of Kaua’i’s 40 days of rain! I got recruited to teach when they found out I was an award winning art teacher from , at the time, America’s most violent inner city, Detroit. When I got to Kaua’i, it made sense. Sure felt like I died and went to Heaven. They all wanted to know if I knew Eminem😂! I lived there 9 years. Kaua’i teaches you the truth. My ex wasn’t happy, so I became homeless in Fantasy Island. Every major religion is on Kaua’i, and with the Garden of Eden felling, one tends to connect with spiritual matters. I met the coolest people while I was homeless in Paradise. Most good, one bad guy. A man that helped a Detroit visitor get a fish hook out of her hand ended up on TV for killing his wife Sandy. But after many years, he got convicted. I hope Kaua’i continues to bless you all. Oh the winning art students continued. I did a workshop on how my Detroit students won art contests for my ex, and Sophia Gregory won the Doodle For Google cones representing the state of Hawaii. I have returned to Michigan where I reconnected with a woman I had had a crush on since I was 4! Life is good now, even with this COVID. I learned to play guitar, have love, and I can vicariously walk the magical trails with your high quality videos. May Kaua’i’s blessings follow you all and protect you and your loved ones (ohana). I give your video the top award if there is one. Aloha braddahs and sista!
Just what I needed! This was like a big Xanax! The stress relief of watching this was a physical thing!! Thumbs up and a big thank you for your efforts, editing, music and attitudes of serenity that you produce here. Thank you more than you know.
My wife and I hiked the Kalalau Trail some 25 years ago in beautiful sunny weather. There is a heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple/platform) made of lava rocks near the trailhead. The ancient Hawaiians occasionally performed ritual human sacrifices there, so behave and don't trash-out the trail. The trail is tricky and narrow in places with sheer drops from the cliffs to the ocean. I'm not sure I'd have a go at it in the weather you faced. If you get injured out there in those conditions, it's unlikely a helicopter could fly in to get you out. Still, I have to praise your grit and enthusiasm. I think we hiked in for 5 miles or so to a lovely, curving beach (with dangerous rip currents by the way) and then followed a stream inland for ~1 mile to an absolutely stunning high waterfall and a pool of crystal clear water surrounded by ferns. The cool water really revived us after the hike. Like many places in the world, there is an undercurrent of resentment towards "haoles" (a somewhat pejorative Hawaiian term for white folks.) and not without some justification. Just dig a bit into Hawaiian history and you'll know why. One of the best ways to diffuse potential conflicts is to shift your thinking to "island time," a loose term signifying no stress, a slower pace and a generally mellow attitude. For example, honking your car horn impatiently is considered extremely rude behavior. Learning to pronounce Hawaiian words properly (phonetically similar to Spanish) with its tricky glottal stops, is a simple way to show your respect for local culture, make new friends and spread the spirit of aloha.
I am pleased to have watched your entire footage of the island of Kauai. Kudos to all of you. I want to thank you so much for the details that you all have shared, the stories, your trail hiking footage, the taste of Hawaii foods. Yes, the trails on the islands can be treacherous at times, although there are much more to explore. December is winter in Hawaii. (Rainy season) Speaking of this, I am a native of Kauai, born and raised, but do reside now in Oregon. I have emailed my friends about your video and I'm sure they'll be pleased as well. Mahalo (thank you) for being respectful to the aina (land), its people. You all should visit again, perhaps during the summer months to head back to Kalalau Trail or take a boat cruise amongst the cliffside of Na Pali. Mahalo Nui Loa (thank you very much). Aloha Dorean (Halalani)
The soft Guava fruit can be eaten whole. The other hard skin fruit was a variety of Lilikoi( Passion Fruit) so wonderful the fruit but the scent of the flower is Magnifico ! Wonderful video, I live in Wainiha Valley for 34 year’s. Paradise Found !
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the work you put into these adventures. I've been enjoying the music. I was pleasantly surprised that you do that as well. Great job, one and all.

The editing of the dance, what a feast for the eyes. Top notch!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing vid. Please share more like this one.

Was pretty nervous when you guys were on top of Sleeping Giant mountain. Glad everyone made it down safe and I really enjoyed the video. Thomas ❤

WOW ❤️I can only wish...thanks for sharing I enjoyed it 🙂
Really enjoying your Kauai experience.
Love this informative video. You guys are fascinating! Videography is on point👌
Loved every second of your video! Thank you for sharing your amazing adventures 😊
Great video! Shows why Kauai is our Fam's favorite vacation spot! We even purchased a Timeshare in Lihue at the Kauai Beach club at the Marriot!
Taking me back to Paradise. Surreal
Excellent channel! Keep up the good work! Beautiful cinematography and great commentary. Feeling isolated during this COVID19 situation and found your content very refreshing!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you're doing well during the quarantine, and we'll do our best to keep putting new videos out there during this :)
Amazing video. Love Kauai so much. A gem of a place.
Just what I needed! This was like a big Xanax! The stress relief of watching this was a physical thing!! Thumbs up and a big thank you for your efforts, editing, music and attitudes of serenity that you produce here. Thank you more than you know.

It is great video for viewers. hopefully will gonna see other news. Thanks foe sharing!!!
Awesome job with the production of this piece. Will be there over Christmas. Really helpful prep.
Great video. I love all the little fun facts. Some really awesome views there. I can't wait to see your next adventure.
Beautiful breadfruit yummy
