Let's completely remove the skill of the operator, and over load it with more controllers and sensors to where it's constantly broke down and it two full time guys with laptops to keep the pile of shit running!

Look, I would’ve loved to have all these safeguards on the old junk I ran. It still takes a good operator to get the best out of a good piece of equipment. Talk all you like. This is an extremely nice excavator and I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t love to operate it.

Once they figure out how to calibrate the wear on the teeth/cutting edge on the fly they might have something but old school free hand is still a fine art!
As a business owner, I'd much prefer the ability to send 3D files / limits to a machine while some low-experience operator gains his legs. This allows me the ease of NOT having to find a 10yr+ experienced operator when we've already proven machines with CNC run circles around humans. They'll soon be fully automated -- no lunch breaks or hang overs to deal with.
I done broke out a cab light once. I bet every operator has at one point too. Been operating for over 20 years and none of these gizmos replace experience.
Yes and no, a long you are stationary you can set a cut or fill offset, but if you move you have to set a reference point before you move and then pick that up after the move. This is for 2D machines, with 3D you are can move and wiggle around as much as you want and work off models or reference points.

It takes one person to hit a gas,fiber,water etc and you will be complaining how terrible the operator is. Remember slow and steady is efficient,efficient is fast, fast makes the company money.
And what happens when eXYZ fails and now you swing out into live traffic or hit that powerline? It's great until it fails - and unless there are redundant backup systems, this is an inevitable Class Action lawsuit...
Cat is just evolving. They see the same thing i see. Its getting harder and harder to find operators. Yes the old guys don't like this technology because they can run it without and have a finished product. The newer generation of operators flat out suck. Not all of them but the majority do. These new operators just don't have it. They can dig a hole and load a truck but when it comes to holding a grade forget it. Dozer or trackhoe. I have some operators ive been trying to teach for almost a year now how to hold a blade and it just doesn't sink in. Ive been through so many operators in the past years i can't even count. I have one guy who is half ass and can run 3d machine control half ass but most of the time im going behind him fixing screw ups. Motor grader operator? Haha you have to pull them out of retirement around here.
And it's still back of the bus to the intelligent Komatsu excavators and their capabilities... the speed and accuracy when Autos are engaged is no comparison.
I understand that technology is a must.but a good driver doesnt need all this .are companys going to pay for a good driver or pay cat or another manufacturer to put a computer to work .a skill will be lost ..

Exactly. Anyone that has worked under ovethead lines and things of that nature can appreciate this type of tech. I've worked in alleys and other tight digging situations, day in snd day out. All it takes is one mistake to damage sn overhead line. It doesn't matter if you have swung the machine 500 times without incident. The one time is what's critical. The people you see complaining about technology are the mass earth movers.....the operators with the least technical skills that sit in a machine mindlessly moving earth all day. They don't like the tech because a robot can do their monotonous job better than they can. Skilled operators that work in rehab of water and sewer utilities where conditions constantly change aren't worried about it one bit. The same with fine grading. This tech eliminates the mindless job of a guy walking around with a grade rod. It's great for small businesses that run lean and have a hard time finding people willing to even show up to work. The people crying about this tech would have cried decades ago when trucks began hauling cargo. Or even horses and wagons. If that would have been stopped, imagine all of the jobs that could have been created by men pulling carts, or better yet, hauling it on their backs.

Aaron Hernandez yeah I hear ya man... we have a first of its kind tier 4 shovel and it takes 700 litres of def fluid in 24 hours. Trying to get it to clean out the exhaust is a nightmare.
We have the 336FL at work at it’s a terrible thing, Huge ass, easily dented light metal doors. Lots of computer errors. Huge DEF consumption. It’s actually a pretty slow machine in cycle time.
3/4 of the engine compartment is dedicated to an exhaust scrubber. It’s ridiculous. The engine is so constipated with exhaust equipment, that I feel the only thing Cat could do is derate the engine RPM and cut back the speed.
Sure wish I still had an old EX -1 series Hitachi. What was wrong with those? Nothing. The UH series was awesome . Dig and dig and dig and dig. Sadly as technology moves ahead, so does all the problematic computer controlled equipment.
And soon to come the machine with no cab. Just like everything else nobody will have to drive or operate anything just fuel it up and push the go botton tell it what to do and press start. The new way of doing things then if something goes wrong blame the machine.
Yup, the entire goal is to get rid of the operators to reduce costs. The Holy Grail is to run mines using a remote control center and a couple of poorly-paid desk jockeys, relying on Indian programmers to generate code and Germans to build the machines. Who wins? Not the poor blue collar schmucks out in the field...
ArthurDentZaphodBeeb already happening in Australia mate, rio tinto has already got over 100 fully autonomous cat and komatsu haul trucks, fully autonomous drill rig and haul train, maybe by the end of this year they’ll have a complete autonomous mine site

Where the person get in puts the destination in and sit back and read the paper at 60mph and never looks at road. The Google cars are only aloud to do 25mph in town not on the open road.
I have been operating hoes for 12 years now and have run a bunch of different machines. But these new cats are absolutely horrible they have completely changed everything in the machine. The controls sit higher and you cant lower the arm rests really low. And as for simple adjustments you have to take your eyes off the job and search through the damn computer to make simple changes its dangerous. And the stupid electronic hydraulics there is no play. To me running this machine is like starting new basically the same as switching from cat to Deere controls. I can not run this machine at all and now my boss is switching over to them and now I have to look for a new job thanks cat I used to like there machines but not now.
With all this technology what's the point of having an operator the machine should just operate itself. Just totally pointless and just a waste of time and people's money spend it on an experienced operator
I work for komatsu. They have had this out already for a few years. There system is a lot better. Just wait they r coming out with a cab less model. No person to fuck it up . Cat is far behind the time. That's w huh y they are a dead company.
That would take a long ass time to make it a trade with no operators in the cabs. Not even that some of us like to get in our machines and operate making it happen

Gerald Paul you can absolutely change tooth wear. It is an easy measurement that you do. Less than 5 minutes to do.
