Will You Be Too Late to Retire Off Dividends?

  • My Portfolio:
One of the most common concerns that I see from people within the dividend investing community is that many people think they're getting too late to be able to someday retire off dividends. It's a very popular topic that I see all the time on websites like Reddit and other dividend communities out there. Most people who are familiar with dividend investing are also well aware of the dividend snowball. The longer you remain in the market and reinvest your dividends, the faster your money grows. Although it starts slow, after so many years, your money begins to jump exponentially, and the longer you remain in the market, the better. So it’s very common to see people asking questions like, I’m 30, or I’m 45, and I want to start dividend investing. Am I too late to start investing in dividend stocks? Because these people ideally don’t want to wait, or they might not even have the option of waiting, 30 or 40 years to allow a snowball to grow massively.

My advice for dividend investors is to save for a bigger investment if you really want to retire off dividends, My major picks are SCHD and VOO and a few more that i can't mention because my FA Dianne Sarah Olson is really strict on discretion, anyway i digress, You can't expect to make a million from a thousand dollar investment that's where most people get it wrong, It's not a lottery!! Make realistic investments!! People say it's good to be greedy while investing..Yes, i agree but there's a difference between being greedy and being delusional haha. For example last year I invested 80k in stocks and made about 246k, but guess what? I put it all back and traded with her again and now I'm rounding up close to a million.

Dividends from SCHD are typically taxed at the qualified dividend rate, which may be lower than ordinary income tax rates for many investors. However, the main focus for markets now is Nvidia, which has powered a large chunk of the S&P 500’s recent earnings. Nvidia’s stock, up more than 90% this year, rose 2.5% in New York on Monday, sending the Nasdaq 100 index to another record high. I'm still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...

I'm almost 69. Just started investing with Robinhood in 2020. Hit the $100K recently with my portfolio. You can do it, by having a diverse portfolio, picking stocks with a good, supported dividend yield, track your yields and try for 6% or more, and buy some income stocks too. I only have about 30 stocks but I'm averaging $350/month in dividends and shooting for $400-500. With other investments and zero debt, I'm looking at a pocket money yield with my investments intact as an emergency liquid fund when I pull the cord at 70. I had zero experience and made mistakes, and I'm still in a good place. You've got this.

It is never too late to get started. When I was working I was able to save a little bit each year into some mutual funds and my 401k plan at my job.
But I did not begin to build a dividend portfolio until _after_ I retired a few years ago. Now that dividend portfolio is yielding me about $500 per month while taking a bit of risk. The snowball effect is already begun.
Eventually I plan to move those other funds into my dividend portfolio.
When working there were a number of coworkers that complained that they could not save any money. But they were able to go out for lunch every day and spend $7 dollars or more for fast food.
As DB said, there are often ways to cut our expenses to find money for saving. But everyone is different. (I brought my own lunch every day... sometimes just one banana or one boiled egg, or a single slice of bread).
Now that I am retired I do splurge once a week for the $3 Whopper Wednesday...I cut it half and make 2 meals of it. 😊

I heard most of the time people think investing requires lots of capital at once. But most didn't know that they could DCA and or buy fractional shares. Whether it's dividend stocks or index funds or tech stocks or real estate stocks. If an investor is not rich then the most important steps are to keep your main job because your paycheck can be used to contribute a bit into buying dividend stocks and dip your toes into the stock market and put in all your mind to learn it even after you finish your daily job. Learn about the company, ask the right questions, don't be shy to talk about finance even if you only have $20 in your account. Remember there's no shortcut to become rich and when it's too good to be true then most likely it's too good to be true then don't buy it. Always treat your investment like a business not quick and easy money.

I find this to be a very motivational channel. I had been doing the real estate route. Still have the houses, but dividend investing and planning is more interesting and easier. Now jam every single dollar I can into my stock account. I have listened to this young man and it is paying off.

    • @SewingBoxDesigns

I was using house owning to explain dividend stocks to a friend. No HOA mafia to lien hold sale your home for a 3.25$ under payment of fees. No roof to repair. No plumbing to burst. No renters to evict, no damage to pay repairs for, no squatters to steal and destroy things and no lawyers to have to pay. No mortgage to pay off, and if you hold long term, the taxes go down and if you are smart and throw in some losers, a chunk of loss can be written off. Easy to buy, easy to keep an eye on, easy to sell. No real responsibility to anyone but yourself.

I'm 67, and just started investing just over two years ago, when I learned that one can now open an account with a brokerage firm just like at a bank, and once your account is populated, you can begin investing in the market. This model was not available in the past, and allows you to take complete control over your investments. Alan's advice on this channel has been the primary impetus for my investing, and without his support by these videos, I may have given up entirely. I do not plan to live off my dividends, but rather to use them at some point in the future to augment my SS benefits, which is what most retirees are doing with their stock investments. The good news is that with dividend investments, I do not have to sell the principal investments in order to enjoy a regular income from them, and I will also have an option at some point in the future to actually begin selling the principal stocks and take that extra money as well.

Because of dividends, I first began investing in stocks. It's important, in my opinion, to be able to live off of dividends without selling if you invest and make other income in addition to payouts. It suggests that you may pass that down to your kids and give them a leg up in life. Over the years, I've invested over $600k in dividend stocks; I continue to buy more today and will keep doing so until the price drops even further.

I wholeheartedly concur, which is why I appreciate giving an investment coach the power of decision-making. Given their specialized expertise and education, as well as the fact that each and every one of their skills is centered on harnessing risk for its asymmetrical potential and controlling it as a buffer against certain unfavorable developments, it is practically impossible for them to underperform. I have made over 1.5 million dollars working with an investment coach for more than two years.

Holy shit. I'm over here angry about all the cheap stocks and etfs I didn't invest in when I had thousands in savings doing nothing last year at Age 18. I've started investing at age 19 and putting $280 a month into a portfolio of dividend income and dividend appreciation stocks as well as a separate portfolio of blue chip stocks and several other safe stocks. I'm currently receiving 10$ a month from dividends since I started investing 4 months ago and both my portfolios are pretty green overall. I had no clue I was well under the average age of people who begin investing. I'm glad I've put such a focus on my future using all sorts of online research and information and not taking it for granted. I hope a lot more people in different situations take a look at your page and realize that there's still a benefit to investing for income.

I have some good news about people who don't have a lot of time. If you invest as much as you can, but you can only reach around $100k-$200k growth, I suggest investing the rest in income investing and then live out your retirement in cheaper countries. There was a dividend investor who worked at a pizzeria for 8 Years, got a return of $150k, and took his family to live in the nicer parts of Mexico, hardly having to work for a living anymore. And that was with low-level Pizzeria employee money. Imagine what's possible with an experienced senior like yourself

I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait but watching my portfolio dwindle away is such an eye -sore.

    • @damondiehl5637
      @damondiehl5637 2 дні тому

With the S&P500 and the TSM, you probably have even more overlap than you think, because those types of funds are weighted. They don't just buy equal amounts of every stock in their list. Look at the top ten holdings in each fund, you are almost certainly going to see a lot of duplication. Not that they are bad stocks, but if you are looking for diversification, you are only sorta achieve that. Maybe stay with the S&P500 and then choose a mid-cap fund. 33% in international stocks is probably high, too. I would go 25%, at most.
The hard part of investing is not staring at it all day, every day. Have trust in your choices and stop worrying so much. If you have picked good funds, it will be fine. You should be investing for the long term, so who cares if it is down this week. Turning on automatic contributions and forgetting you have a stock account would not be a bad thing.

Am looking at care options for my 90 yo mother and it's a nightmare in the US unless you have a load of money and can afford at least 6k per month for a good nursing home. Think ahead for yourself too if you should need continuous care and what that means for you and your children. I'm 70 and in good health and don't want to eat up what I've saved on assisted living and nursing care, but if I stay in US that could be a reality.
