Wasn't always a big fan of Cossotto but she always blows me away in this scene

My favourite mezzo. I wish I saw her in her prime (which IMO, was quite short). But I've always wondered why her top notes became hard and flat at a relatively young age (by the time she entered her 40s). I noticed that she smiled more and more for her high notes as her career progressed. Compare her Rosina (Moscow 1964) to Amneris (Tokyo 1973). Here, she is not spreading her mouth that much. Did she change her technique?

It seems to be a Mezzo thing. Their voices hit a ceiling at one point of the range and display these feature. Many struggle with this.It is a good tell between who is actually a Mezzo and who is a soprano.

    1972 in Palermo.

Clearly most of these comments come from people who did not hear her in the 60’s. I did. The voice was in my experience an enormous MEZZO. Never since have I heard such penetrating, orchestra-obliterating sound in the middle-lower range. Her relatively early flatting above the staff proves the point. Carrying the natural weight of her lower voice up eventually caused problems. (Calling her a spinto is like calling Tebaldi a mezzo because she had a strong chest voice. Cossotto’s early ease at the top was not that of a soprano.)

She was a mazing. I am not sure why they say she was not. They probably parrot someone else's opinion of her. People tend to have the need to classify things. If you are a good singer, you can sing all styles of music. You always have very good ears. Thanks for the comment.

The first time I saw someone say that she had a Contralto voice, I think you are ridiculous.

She was a Mezzo soprano. I have a series of videos called "The Great ....". I lump Mezzo sopranos and Contraltos together. Because in the days of Caruso and before there were no such classification of 'Mezzo'. There was soprani or Contralti.

Spinto soprano. Not a real mezzo.
