Top rated Canadian prospect Steve 'The Dragon' Claggett (11-0-1, 6 KOs) captured the WBC light welterweight Youth Intercontinental title with a dominating third round stoppage of previously unbeaten Jose Julio Mendoza (7-1, 3 KOs) of Mexico on Friday night in Calgary, Canada. Claggett started to apply the pressure early in the opening round and presented difficult angles for Mendoza. The fighters exchanged an exciting array of punches in Round 2 until Claggett dropped Mendoza with a stunning right hand. The gallant Mexican beat the count but was sent down again by a left hook. Mendoza survived the round but was dropped hard by a body shot in the third. He beat the count yet again but the referee intervened during Claggett's followup barrage and the fight was called to a halt at the 2:54 mark. With the win Claggett retained his Universal Boxing Hall of Fame title and captured the prestigious WBC youth title.
