The blade from the plow unloads most of the snow that it carries into that clearing before it gets to your driveway. But the amount of effort put into clearing that section is probably equal to the effort in shoveling your driveway.

It's not so much the snow slop the plows leave behind that is the problem. It is the ice that snow turns into if you not fast on removing it before it turns to ice. Once it is ice there is no getting rid of it till it melts. Prevention is the best remedy.

For this to work, you must do 30-40ft of the VDOT's work for them. You must shovel at least half of the street width, as well as your driveway, and its left lead, so the plow will run out of snow(& ice) before it gets to your driveway.

    • @WHJeffB

Yup... After 20 years of shoveling/snow blowing snow, cleaning the bus stop/fire hydrant and driveway apron multiple times (3-5 sometimes) per storm (corner lot no less), I finally figured this out. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to shoot the effing plow drivers as they'd pile snow a few feet deep on my freshly cleared driveway apron!
Last winter I figured out that if I would blow/remove the snow at the curb for that 30-40' before the bus stop I keep clear (as a favor to my neighbors that ride the bus) and our driveway (which is around the corner), very little snow would be pushed into both spaces when the plows did their final clean up runs. It also helps to wait to clear both until the plows are nearly done with the storm.
The removed snow is blown up onto space between the sidewalk and curb. After a few storms, this builds up high enough that the plows can't lift the snow up over the "snow wall", which keeps them from throwing snow back up onto the clean sidewalk (which has to be keep clean by the homeowner per town ordinance).
In the end, you ARE doing your town or state DOT work for them, but ultimately it saves you a lot of extra work and aggravation (who hasn't thought of mauling the plow truck drivers, seriously??).

Unless of course the city cleaning crews have already thrown up a rock-hard mountain-range sized windrow on either side of your driveway entrance that stretches on for dozens of yards to either side. . . and then they don't bother trimming them down all winter. End result is you get home and you can't get into your own effing driveway because the cleaning boyz have shoved a 3-foot+ tall wall of glacial hardpack across the entrance. And, of course, the city by-law states that they aren't responsible for cleaning windows away from driveways regardless of the size.
Come spring, I think I'm gonna hand my next-door neigbor a few garbage bags and tell him to fill them up to the brim with his dog's crap. Then, on a nice, warm Sunday morning, take said filled bags and dump out their contents at the front door of the city's civic office as a sign of "gratitude".

I clear a snowblowers width past the pavement on both sides of the end of my driveway for about 20 to 30 feet along the road. That gives plenty of room for the plows to drop most of the snow and I don't have to worry about the slop they leave turning into an ice mountain overnight at the end of my driveway. It also help the melt find the gutter that is on our side and not stay in the road overnight to make a skating rink (no cars thru) or ice bog (lots of cars thru).

Or just leave a bank of snow across the driveway till after the roads have been plowed, then clear it. That would prevent the plows from unloading into the open space just by not having any open space to begin with. Of course, the packed snow bank would be much harder to clear than the rest of the driveway.

*So, in other words:* Shovel *75 square feet* of snow to the _left_ of your driveway, so that when the plow comes you won't have to shovel what would've been just *50 square feet* of snow in _front_ of your driveway. This video is RIDICULOUS for SEVERAL REASONS:
    1) IN ADDITION to the 75 sq ft. of snow you shoveled, there will STILL be at least _some_ snow left by the snow plow in _front_ of your driveway.
    2) The snow that is being pushed into the space in front of your driveway is NOT the _snow from the _*_parking space_*_ to the left of your driveway._ It's the snow from the *STREET* that the plow truck is plowing that is being pushed in front of your driveway. So, for every inch of street that the plow is moving forward, it is pushing snow with that angled blade and directing it to the side of the road - i.e. in front of your driveway. If you want there to be no snow coming off of that plow blade as it passes by _your_ driveway, you'd have to shovel the snow *in the street* (not the snow in the parking space to the left) in front of the house to the left of you.*

I just make sure to push the snow within the same line the snow plow makes, that way, they are not pushing anything back into my driveway because there is no snow there. Not sure how else to explain it. But just make sure the snow on either side of your driveway lines up evenly with each other. The snow plows usually stay within the line as don’t push it back in.

Parker car right next to the driveway entrance so he won't plow it

So instead of shoveling 15 feet from in front of your driveway , you’re shoveling a 15 ft area in front of your house .... genius. ?

    • @Johnadams20760
      @Johnadams20760 3 роки тому +1

yeah but at least you can get your car in and out of the driveway. plus that stuff is very difficult to shovel or snow blow, it is much heavier

Not good when someone's car is parked there so you end up getting plowed back in anyways 😒

Get a flame blower and melt the snow
It will run down the gutter and turn to ice and create a new problem, 😂

Someone needs to tell that guy that's what snow blowers are for.

Snow blowers are still work, just a different kind of work... Definitely easier on your back though.

@@WHJeffB Snowblowers jam up with the heavy stuff and make it harder than just shoveling. They won't throw wet snow or ice. One time I had to drag mine all the way back to the house. Not fun. If it is light powder snow they work great but then again so does a shovel.

It's not your snow the plow puts in your drive way. It's the snow from a block away

Laurence Roche: It's illegal to do that, for good reason. Maybe it's faster but it could be more expensive for you, not to mention its being narrow focused.
