    Re: Minefields
"Potentially you could take a photo of the terrain and then mark on there where you mine...but are you really going to do that before a battle?"
If you want to use mines, you need to discuss how you're going to use them with your opponent and come to an agreement on how to make it work. I play on a hex mat, but mine does not have unique space identifiers and so I had to designate spots...
I had floated the idea of a "disturbed earth" token which was double-sided and on one side would list whether it was mines or just loose soil; the loose soil would be treated as Rough terrain, so it wasn't *just* a decoy. We wound up having it not really matter much that time, but I kept the rules prototype in a file folder to tinker with later. Like with artillery support. I might just default to using the same rules as these cards, though... much cleaner.
But yes, you want to use mines? You deal with the mess in using them :)

I gave serious thought to the photo thing, but as you say, are we really going to bother doing that?
Ooooo that's a good idea in regards the disturbed earth. That's why I love this channel comments section. I'd never have thought of that. I'll have to meditate on this.

@@duskhaunters3025 I basically wound up agreeing with my brother: "for this campaign we're not doing hidden units or minefields, no matter how good they turn out to work".
We only just used infantry because there wasn't much way around it. Aerospace and VTOLs are also on the list of "we're not doing this, too much trouble".
(As for the infantry: I was having to defend against an incursion to a point of interest on the map, which is an underground facility. Infantry were deployed intended to get inside and hold it off from there. I couldn't 'prototype' the rules for that right away so we didn't do it. Next time, it will be.)

I was at the Atlantic City Open this year. The tournament allowed players to use 6 points of battlefield support (No duplicates) Elementals were allowed and artillery was the hard counter for them. One thing you can do with Battlefield artillery is designate 6 hexes before the game starts. Those "presets" don't have to wait a turn for the artillery to land.
Also be very careful about dumping ammo while there's Aerospace support in play. One hit to the back and mech goes boom.

Oh, very interesting in regards to the tournament rules. How did that work out? Was it considered too crunchy/not crunchy enough? I'd never even thought about the ammo dump; I bet the people who wrote the rules didn't either, as that's instant death for a 'Mech on a roll of 5/6!

@@duskhaunters3025 It didn't detract from the main game too much. It force people to consider the terrain more. I fought against 3 Mad Dogs (the SRM boat variants) and I force then to run through a river delta, the mined the Hex that lead out of the river delta. It ended up stripping the leg of one of them, which set it up for a kill.
Artillery helped in scenarios where objective control was key.
I will say it really helps to play with the various supports beforehand to get used to how they work. It definitely adds a layer of strategy that you don't normally find in Traditional Battletech.

what I do for mines on my war game table with out a hex. I wright numbers on one side of my battle mat with number 1 inch apart up the side, and on the top of my game map with letters one inch apart. so you would say mines are on E/6 on the gird. also great video.

      Thanks!
Interesting idea; I might try something like that myself. I might do a bit of play testing with mines actually, as a few people on here have given out some interesting alternatives for mines in an Alpha Strike esq game.

You do indeed, I think it comes with a taster of the offensive aerotech and artillary cards. I don't think you get the whole package though. I wonder if the Heavy Strike cards come in Alpha Strike? ;)
