- "Miss Otis Regrets" was written by Porter, Cole.
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today, Madam
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today
She is sorry to be delayed
But last evening down in Lover's Lane she strayed, Madam
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today
When she woke up and found
That her dream of love was gone, Madam
She ran to the man who had led her so far astray
And from under her velvet gown
She drew a gun and shot her lover down, Madam
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today
When the mob came and got her
And dragged her from the jail, Madam
They strung her upon the old willow across the way
And the moment before she died
She lifted up her lovely head and cried, Madam
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today

Paul n Bob, from many moons ago . . . good times 😘
90 years and the poignancy of this song hasn't faded a tone. Wonderful rendition.
Well, today I was listening to all the other versions mentioned below and my thruth is: this version from Bryan Ferry is the one and only to really transport the meaning of this beautiful song.
My favorite version.
Magnificent ! This version could as well has been sung / written by Tom Waits !
The whole album was fantastic!
Also my favorite version!
Heaven 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Danke.
Bryan Ferry war der Sänger von ROXY MUSIC!!!
Stimmt! Sorry!... Christoph Kirschhöfer
Bryan Ferry
Ella Fitzgerald did a moving redition
👌💪👍🥰....
This song is honestly really dark if one comes to think of it…it’s essentially a butler telling this woman a story about this lady who killed her husband (who is implied to be cheating on her) then got thrown in jail and lynched by a mob.
And it’s written by Cole fuckin Porter no less. Probably one of the darkest, yet most beautiful songs ever written. This song could easily have been done by Nick Cave or Tom Waits, as mentioned below.
Many versions of this song do a somewhat tongue in cheek approach, but here Bryan Ferry’s version is completely sincere: the butler sounds depressed and tired that this has happened, and seems to be really reluctant to tell this woman’s story to her friend…he sounds sad, almost completely hopeless, saying “I’m sorry I hate to tell you this story, but I have no choice, even though I’ve been tired all day.”
uhm..
Looking for Jack Jackson and Alberta Hunter, the real way this should be played
Jose Feliciano is the Gold Standard for this classic.
oh come on, Ella Fitzgerald ..
@@philipsmith67 No, it's actually José Feliciano.
if you'd like to hear the song done properly, check out van morrison's version with joey defrancesco. impeccable.
This was an excellent rendition, but for me, Ella Fitzgerald is the gold standard.
Fred Astaire, (in a clip with Barrie Chase) did the song justice --- but --- alas, you tube must have had to take it down. such as shame..
I have already seen that version on Internet. But I did not agree with that version of Fred Astaire. It seemed me that they plaid it as if it was a comedy...
wonderull that's all
+Uri Solomonovich true!
A funny song...I cannot help laughing when I hear this song.
Um…I don’t find this version of the song to be funny.
He sounds depressed.
@@flannerymonaghan-morris4825 I found that the lyrics of this song is kind a comical.
Well, yeah, the song was actually written by Cole Porter as a joke.
However, Bryan Ferry sings the song with such earnestness and poignancy that the darkness of the lyrics come through.
Was meinst du damit…? Durch eine Maschine? ….etc. ? 😔
@@TTHamburg: Moin, Tom! Ach, das ist aber gut zu hören! 😊 Das find ich nämlich auch 🎹 🎼🎺 🎞
It might be funny and for me...but what I do feel is we touched the bottom afew nights before..and its lost for me...I dont usualy rise ..change my mood depending on comfortable circumstances ..influence of very pretty Ladies..I do of course but not the way I feel personaly my lost happened ..its lost of ambition to respect
