I Maori and use to live in nz not realising I grew up listening to Aussies greats bands of all time did not realise when I moved to Australia love every band and songs of aussies rock bands thanks to my dad we still go hard listening to them thank you nextdoor cuzzies
Hearing James Reyne singing this song makes me proud to be Australian and have grown up through the 80's in Australia and listening to this on a cassette tape and on the Radio at Home and in my Holden Commodore, I still love this song after almost 40 years since it was released and think the sound ofit has never aged.
Oh my god. When I was really young, me and my family would go to this beach in Wollongong every Australia Day and this song would play every single time on the radio for every single Australia Day. I love this song, so nostalgic.
After hearing this song in passing about a month ago but not able to remember the name of the band or lyrics, I have since been on an epic search to track it down. After querying multiple friends, youtube and google - it was finally my mother who was rocking the 80s who referred me here. Such relief!
I heard this song about 8 years ago too at a party in the rocky mountains, my Australian friend's band was playing it while I was tripping on mushrooms and it was the coolest song I ever heard. I couldnt tell what they were singing and couldnt find the lyrics anywhere and my searches came up with nothing until a couple weeks ago this song popped into my youtube feed and the name struck me "THATS THE SONG". And now this gem will always be in my musical rotation
In 81 i was 10 and a little to young to see Aussie Crawl back in the day but i remember watching countdown and loooove it. If I could turn back time i would be right there right now reliving the 80's. Best years of my life. Miss my Bmx bike and pretending to be and play Dr Who and the daleks with the local kids.
astonishing to look back on these outrageous lyrics played on TV for children to sing along and memorize while their parents watched on with not a clue this band, "the crawl" could have been as big as any Aussie rock band of their time. some of their music is still unmatched today (listen to Reckless and consider the lyrics, consider the unconventional confidence of unfinished lyrics "don't be so..."

"I was heading for my mountain home where all the ladies names are Joan." James Rayne was singing about the suburb he grew up in, Mt. Eliza in Victoria. A very posh part of Melbourne these days.
I met him in the mid 90s about a half dozen times and I can tell you he is very bright. He was, at least to me, down to earth and had a strong social awareness. A leftie if you like. It kinda makes sense - the lyrics to his songs are very clever. I liked him.
Came out the year I was born and remember this song from about 4 yrs old waiting in a dusty carpark in the Mt Isa mines for my dad to finish work. So yeah you could say it brings back memories.
I saw Crawl at a concert in about '83/4. I had a whole ounce of primo MJ rolled up and ready to go. Every couple of minutes I'd fire one up, take a huge hit, then pass it to the crowd. Used up the whole ounce with time to spare. Those were the days.
I went to a Redgum show, at the QIT Campus Club. I can't remember the song, but at the strategic moment a toaster in front of Schumann popped up two huge doobies. He flamed them and chucked them to the crowd. Good times...
I saw them around then on the Gold Coast.....in a big space...somewhere........very stoned.......whole lot of bands......oh the memories ( or part memories...lol )
I listened to an awesome song by Australian Crawl while in Maui when I was 27?? I'm now 55 .. ugh .. don't recall this song but I did buy their album upon returning home ... loved them, didn't know they were still in action ... will have to check this out ... still have the album I'm sure ... What about Bon Scott playing the bagpipes on the back of a truck for "It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock'n'roll" and singing?
They only mimed on countdown. Did he even have a harmonica in his hand?
Aussie TV lip syncing at its best.

This was a massive hit in 1981 now 40 odd years later it's still outstanding and much better listening to than any modern day crap

Lyrics:
Let me tell you about my mountain home
Where all the ladies names are Joan
Where husbands work back late at night
Hopes are up for trousers down
With hostess on a business flight
Taxi in a Mercedes drive
I hope that driver's coming out alive
The garden is a dorsetted
That lady she's so corseted
She's got 15 ways to lead that boy astray
He thinks he's one and only
But that lovely she's so lonely
She pumps him full of breakfast and she sends him on his way
What a sing song dance
What a performance
What a cheap tent show
Oh no no no no no
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up light up light up
Silently she opens the drawer
Mothers little helper is coming out for more
Strategically positioned before the midday show
Her back is arched those lips are parched
Repeated blow by blow
Later at the party all the mps rave
About the hummers she's been giving
And the money that they save
To her it is skin lotion
For his promotion to
That flat in surfers paradise with the ocean view
What a sing song dance
What a performance
What a cheap ten show
Oh no no no no no
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up light up light up
