Hey! I’m 17 and going to korea as a birthday present in April. I’ve never met and been able to talk to another black girl that has been so i was just wondering something’s to know before I go. My biggest question is do you think it’s somewhat mandatory for me to learn at least some korean before I go? Just like for ordering maybe or something small like that. Or is there anything I should do before going? I hope i’m not wasting your time or anything and you don’t have to go into detail but any information would be rlly helpful
I'm Korean living in Korea. I often feel that I'm being watched especially by old ladies. I felt really bad about it but one day, someone told me that older people tend to stare young people, thinking of their old memories back in time when they were young and healthy. I was told that they don't have any negative intentions. However, I'm still very uncomfortable with being stared like that. They really should understand others' feelings first.
I'm obviously not a black person, but as a foreigner living in Seoul i do recognise many of the situations you mentioned in the video. I really appreciated your balanced view of things. Thank you for making this video. I also get stared at a lot (I also look super different from ethnic Koreans), so I can definitely relate to that one. And makeup is hard to find if you have a skin tone that's different than Koreans. From a business perspective that does make sense, given that the society is very homogenous still, but thankfully sites like Coupang and iHerb exist.
Well as Korean, your experience and view of Korea are better than i thought. Since society is very (i felt) rigid and closed to diversity. I thought you felt “Oh.. I dont wanna go there anymore..” Cause I think concept of embracing and being together with difference is pretty lack in this country. (nevertheless I’m Korean, sometimes I feel like I’m alien because soooo homogenous stream in Korea.) But, many Korean want to change these sides. And now, we slowly changing our society with respect and love. (I can’t speak in English well, but i hope you could understand what i meant. Thank you for reading this looong comment. Individualism is not our thing here in Korea. So some of you might felt uncomfortable but it's not a racism at all. So don't be so mad for those people who felt bad while stayed here in Korea. Anyway, I sincerely apologize for those people. 😭
I’m a Black woman who loves Korea and has had such a positive experience that I’ve made it my second home. I felt nothing but welcomed and didn’t experience any stares; no one followed me around in stores or made me feel different. Out of all the countries I’ve visited in Asia, Korea is my favorite.
Im glad you enjoyed your experience in South Korea. Personally I didn't. I've traveled my whole life and Korea was the only country where I felt racism and I was insulted on a daily basis for being mixed raced. I didn't felt welcomed at all but Im happy to know it was not the case for all POC. By the way, I love your energy!
Thank you for your comment! Black women serialize themselves on the internet then expect to be seen differently by tge rest of the world. It's 2023, learn some respect and class and pple will see you differentky
I've seen on other videos that there is a phrase 'black horse' used in Korea to describe the curvy shape of black women. Typical Korean women are quite flat in the back, but us black women are more curvy. I think some Korean men fetishize black women for having bigger, curvier bums and hips.
The term is actually a saying and it has nothing to do with a Woman's figure but everything to do with her ethnicity. They want to take a ride then when the fun is done, get off and keep it pushing.
I haven’t heard of black horse, but in Korea we have the saying 백마를 타다 which means to ride a white horse. It basically refers to subset of Korean men who desire to sleep with white women.
Loved thisss honestly I already expect the stares cause I’m Muslim too and yk I get stared at my whole life just keep thinking your the main character and dw bout it
YESS! Emphasis on MAIN CHARACTER 😂 when I returned to America I felt like such a regular person because no more stares. But in Korea I felt like such a celebrity lol I got used to the stares
I'm so happy that I came across your video,I'm planning to live in Korea but not for too long, I'm a black person so I was scared about going because I just felt like I'd stand out too much but hearing your logic explanation eased that tension and I will definitely visit Korea 🇰🇷 ❤
I was stationed in Korea while in the army ( I'm a black male ) had a GOOD time ) sometimes you have to take chances in life and leave your comfort zone.I also once served in the navy ( the navy was before the army ) did 4 deployments to Iraq with the Texas Guard ( I volunteered for all 4 tours ) also did 2 deployments back-to-back. After my 4 deployments to Iraq,I did 10 yrs as an overseas contracter ( Iraq,Qatar,Kuwaitt & Afganistan ) did sercurity work, mercenary & logistics.Been back in the states for a little over a year now, didn't really want to come back tho.As you know the military left Afganistan and so did the civilian contracters,so here I am.The point I'm trying to make is take chances, leave those COMFORT zones, you don't want to grow old and wish you'd done things when you were young.
Cool video. One thing I love about this video that I feel many videos like these tend to miss the mark at is remaining constructive and level-headed throughout. Often whenever people talk about Black people in Asian countries, they always talk down to the Asians and speak of them in very objectifying and degrading lights and treat them like monoliths or novelties, or they just go the complete opposite direction and start demonizing them with no nuance in-between. Again, highly appreciate you for not going down that route, especially because of how easy it is to do so.
Loved the video. I've been in Korea for two weeks now and the make-up situation always scares me, will definitely hit up Coupang. A good setting spray would also go a long way because the humidity is pretty high.
I grew up as a military kid. That led to me going to a lot of places. I lived into japan and have been to Korea and china and other places. Yeah people stare. Yeah its gonna be out of curiosity cuz ur rare. Will they have racist thoughts? Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? Not at all. As long as they arent trying to hurt you it really doesn't matter. We have too much of a history both black and as humans in general for anyone, especially black people to think they can go to an area, where they are both rare and exotic, and not expect to get treated differently. I'll be going to Korea in a few months as a tefl teacher and I plan to get the most out of my time there
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am actually interested in visiting Korea, currently practicing the language at a young age so I am prepared when I go when I'm older
Thank you so much! I’m going to be studying internationally next year in Korea and I’ve been really nervous about it. Your videos are very informative and have eased my nervousness!
You are so well spoken! Sorry about some of those experiences. Thanks for sharing it all. You also kept a very positive, classy attitude. People are peope..there are beautiful souls and also many closed minded ones. Regardless of culture. That is part of my background and I appreciate you sharing on SK. Stay positive like you are! 🌞
I love how you explained the staring part!!! I've always said this Korea is different from the US or UK that has people from everywhere so they don't stare at you. I saw that you're a Nigerian as well and yk that whites aren't popular in Nigeria... when Whites come to Nigeria, people stare at them!!! I actually think the place you come from determines your experience in korea or what you'll think about korea. idk if this makes sense lol
No yes!! This makes complete sense! I’m a child of tuna dream immigrants, so I understand what it means to assimilate into a new culture, I also understand how to be comfortable in new situation like that, and give more grace to them. However, somebody who has never really traveled the world or doesn’t have the understanding would probably have a different experience for sure.
If you are not used to staring and you want to travel to Germany or Europe some time, Korea is a good start to get used to it, because other than in the Uk people do stare...a lot 😄
The staring definitely happens. I would explore and get away from tourist areas. My body fat is very low and I would be followed by big crowds of people sometimes. I even entered stored and couldn't leave because of the crowds that surrounded me. I didn't get offended and nobody ever did anything to me so I just ignored it.
wow yes, thank you for doing this vid. I also have done some research and heard a lot of this same thing. And just to be fair, that stuff the guy talked about on your lunch date, I have had the exact same kinds of conversations with white people here in america... they think they are being casual, inclusive, or sensitive to your situation (sometimes they are being curious or downright nosy about what it's like to be blk). But yea, it's awkward and degrading to always talk about these stereotypical (negative) situations and ideas around dark-skinned folks.
No bestie don't let fear hold you back from expereincing life. No country is perfect there are prejudices everywhere so I figured since I can't change or control that so I am going to enjoy life. Also I never got one hateful comment while in Korea, but then again I don't know Korean. But either way all the people I came across were so kind
Loved the video and your personality too! I’ll be visiting in 2 days. 😬 Idk if I missed this part of your video but how was it navigating around with your level of understanding of Korean language?
I get it about the dating part because he wouldn’t ask questions like that to a person his own race but mostly they do see black women as a body because of some female rappers on social media or tv.
see, i like k-pop and k-dramas but i know it’s just for entertainment and humans are gonna human anywhere you are. i hate when ppl think when they watch k-drama they think the men there will be JUST like your favorite character.
I am not fluent and don't speak it. I learned basic words before going and picked up on some while there. And I was a little nervous at first but then I adjusted pretty fast
Is Itaewon Beauty Supply open again, because they had closed a couple years ago. Also, just side note, if its the one that I am thinking about, it's not black owned. They just hired African women to work in the shop, and doing hair, but the owner is Korean. She is also only slightly nicer than the Korean BS owners in America, if you pick up what I am putting down.

Thank you for the informative video!! Now, I know you just left East Asia, but I do hope you go to Japan one day! Would really love to see you film some videos there.
Do you like to twerk? Hahaha! I'm in Korea now. I believe it is normal to stare at Black people here because we are the Unicorn here. Some people seem nice but I don't speak Korean so it is difficult to have conversations. Also, Seoul is super beautiful. The size of NYC but it is super clean. They see the twerking thing on TV and music videos of popular groups or rappers in America etc. Twerking is very popular.
In korea they use words for skin colors. 흑-black 인 person 흑인 black or dark skinned person. 백 white 인 person 백인 white person. Its tottaly cleared. People in here goes easily and friendly with 백인 white skinned persons instead of south asian and african races. Hardly people in here will sit next to you while you are on the train . Many things are here that you can feel it. Yeah physical racism is tottaly zero in here . Tnx to the Strong law of violence in here.
I thought this too but I don’t think we should generalize because tons of people on the train sat next to me no problem. And during my stay I didn’t have many negative racially influenced encounters. But I was only visiting I’m sure it’s different if you lived there
@@lorylove492 Yes racism exists in around the world but NOT as extreme as America. America is the only country where we are each labeled a skin color...think about that for a moment.

I’ve never heard this name but the fetishization is real!!^^
As a poc who is a K-pop fan, I’m very happy I came across this video because I want to go visit Korea at some point
You will bestie! It is worth it
Same. Korea looks like a really beautiful and interesting place to go!
@@caradazee I am actually going to Korea soon!
I'm so happy that I came across your video,I'm planning to live in Korea but not for too long, I'm a black person so I was scared about going because I just felt like I'd stand out too much but hearing your logic explanation eased that tension and I will definitely visit Korea 🇰🇷 ❤
yk i had the same problem but i'm a half black person and i don't see like but idk 😅
Yes bestie, don't let fear hold you back from living your best life
I was stationed in Korea while in the army ( I'm a black male ) had a GOOD time ) sometimes you have to take chances in life and leave your comfort zone.I also once served in the navy ( the navy was before the army ) did 4 deployments to Iraq with the Texas Guard ( I volunteered for all 4 tours ) also did 2 deployments back-to-back.
I love the way you speak, your voice, your reactions, everything. Such a wonderful channel! New subscriber definitely.
Thank you so much!🥹✨
Heya I'm from INDIA 🇮🇳, i like the way you speak, I'm your new subscribers too, this video is quite informative. I like your style ❤️
Wow thank you so much! Welcome to our little family! I’m glad you enjoyed :)
I love and thank you for your positive and healthy attitude, which should be a requirement for anyone traveling to New countries and cultures.
Right! Definitely open minded, I understand no where in the world is perfect but I prefer to focus on the positives in life
Loved the video. I've been in Korea for two weeks now and the make-up situation always scares me, will definitely hit up Coupang. A good setting spray would also go a long way because the humidity is pretty high.
Very true! I didn’t even think of the setting spray omg! I hope you’re enjoying your time in Korea :)
“Is this a smash & pass?! 😖” I HAD TO SUBSCRIBE!!! 😭
had me nervous bestie 😰
My daughter is 29- just arrived there today with a friend for a 2 week stay with her friend’s family. Love it
I grew up as a military kid. I'll be going to Korea in a few months as a tefl teacher and I plan to get the most out of my time there
THIS! I wish other people could understand this mindset. I hope you enjoy your time there!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am actually interested in visiting Korea, currently practicing the language at a young age so I am prepared when I go when I'm older
Go for it!
Thank you so much! I’m going to be studying internationally next year in Korea and I’ve been really nervous about it. Your videos are very informative and have eased my nervousness!
Extremely impressive video. Love your editing skills. I will be traveling there too.
Thank you so much! Safe travels and I hope you enjoy Korea!
Traveling to Korea in 2023 thanks girly!! Im biracial we’ll see how it goes!
Enjoy your visit bestie!
I love how she said I would at me too, because she is beautiful.
i'm going to cry 💛
The staring definitely happens. I would explore and get away from tourist areas. My body fat is very low and I would be followed by big crowds of people sometimes. I even entered stored and couldn't leave because of the crowds that surrounded me. I didn't get offended and nobody ever did anything to me so I just ignored it.
I felt like a celebrity in Korea LOL
Hey
I'm Caroline as well
I'm happy when I see someone who shares the name🥰
My daughter wants to go to Korea, she's only 15 I'm so glad you made this video.
Like I wanna go to Korea after high school, and I'm black and this video is a real help thanks
You'll love it bestie
me too
i’ll like to study abroad there!
Very informative, and you summed up so many questions for people that desires to visit SK. Enjoy your life and stay safe. 😊
Thank you! You too!
Good to know this in advanced, thanks. I'm suprised that they have hairdressers for our hair in Korea :O
wow yes, thank you for doing this vid.
This was very helpful.
Thank you very much!
of course!! Thank you for watching!
The way you are talking and structuring your video, A+ ! I rarely seen such an effortlessly done video. I’m subscribing for sure ❤
I’m Native American and I want to go Korea but I’m scared that I might experience some kind of hateful comments…
Edit:spelling
No bestie don't let fear hold you back from expereincing life. No country is perfect there are prejudices everywhere so I figured since I can't change or control that so I am going to enjoy life. Also I never got one hateful comment while in Korea, but then again I don't know Korean. But either way all the people I came across were so kind
I love the comments section
I'm 24 black and you look like my big sister , but thanks for giving us the info
awww omg thank you!
Loved the video and your personality too! I’ll be visiting in 2 days. 😬 Idk if I missed this part of your video but how was it navigating around with your level of understanding of Korean language?
Really wasn’t that bad! Check out my latest video on three things I wish I knew before. Going to create! It definitely talks a lot about navigation!
@@caradazee Thanks! I’ll check it out😌
OMG YESS ON THE CLOTHES AND MAKEUP!!!!

Oh this is so Nice she's a mood and the subject is very interesting ❤
I've heard all the negative stuff about SK but for some reason, I'd still want to visit. Unfortunately, getting a job in my country is so hard.
It's def worth the visit! No where is perfect but I believe its what you make it

Like damn👀 thank you for the informations 💀awarness❤
Of course! I’m glad it helped
I'm Korean Jesus and I support black owned businesses in Korea. I love you. God loves you. Bless up
I get it about the dating part because he wouldn’t ask questions like that to a person his own race but mostly they do see black women as a body because of some female rappers on social media or tv.
you have such a beautiful smile girllllll🤩
thank you so much!
Please be careful...Wish you the best.
see, i like k-pop and k-dramas but i know it’s just for entertainment and humans are gonna human anywhere you are. i hate when ppl think when they watch k-drama they think the men there will be JUST like your favorite character.
I really want to visit for like a month, Ty for the video
Def worth it! And of course
Paying for a date as a lady is a big NO NO...That's crazy!

Just came across your video by chance, i subscribed and liked it and will be watching more on your channel.. mahalo for your posting it
Thank you and welcome to the fam!
Are you fluent in Korean? And if you can speak Korean how did you learn? how long did you stay in Korea? Was it scary at first but fun to be alone?
I am not fluent and don't speak it. I learned basic words before going and picked up on some while there. And I was a little nervous at first but then I adjusted pretty fast
You’re beautiful ❤
Thank you so much!🥹
Nope on the making me pay for stuff! I will literally take out Google translate and circle what I bought. Good luck sir.
LMAO good luck sir!
loveeeeet...real and concise as can be.
Thank you!!🥹
Your makeup is gorgeous. Flawless skinned sista. Love it ❤
New subs:) Great video beautiful and thanks for the information as I will be traveling to Seoul, South Korea.
Absolutely! Thank you for watching!
I love you attitude. Love love love it.
Thank you so much!
Is Itaewon Beauty Supply open again, because they had closed a couple years ago.
Also, just side note, if its the one that I am thinking about, it's not black owned. They just hired African women to work in the shop, and doing hair, but the owner is Korean. She is also only slightly nicer than the Korean BS owners in America, if you pick up what I am putting down.
oop thank you for the tea!
There are actually stores in korea where u can get products for ur skintone!
Please share the names! When I was there I couldn’t find any but I’ve been hearing this

@@caradazee YESSS
It is NOT normal for the woman to pay on a date.
RIGHT!
Great video
Thank you!
Thank you for watching bestie!
Love this… new sub

In korea they use words for skin colors.
흑-black 인 person 흑인 black or dark skinned person.
백 white 인 person
백인 white person.
But I was only visiting I’m sure it’s different if you lived there
They learned that from Americans, where everyone is issued a skin color
@@nancylove8360 yeah very true
@@nancylove8360 y’all need to stop blaming Americans for everything. Racism exists everywhere not just America.
@@lorylove492 Yes racism exists in around the world but NOT as extreme as America. America is the only country where we are each labeled a skin color...think about that for a moment.
Very beautiful voice!
Thank you!
Thanks
Remember that Korea was once called "The Hermit Kingdom"
i came here in the middle of Speed's Korea stream
