My biggest question is do you think it’s somewhat mandatory for me to learn at least some korean before I go? Just like for ordering maybe or something small like that. Or is there anything I should do before going? I hope i’m not wasting your time or anything and you don’t have to go into detail but any information would be rlly helpful

    I'm Korean living in Korea.
I often feel that I'm being watched especially by old ladies. I felt really bad about it but one day, someone told me that older people tend to stare young people, thinking of their old memories back in time when they were young and healthy. I was told that they don't have any negative intentions.
However, I'm still very uncomfortable with being stared like that. They really should understand others' feelings first.

I'm obviously not a black person, but as a foreigner living in Seoul i do recognise many of the situations you mentioned in the video. I really appreciated your balanced view of things. Thank you for making this video.
I also get stared at a lot (I also look super different from ethnic Koreans), so I can definitely relate to that one. And makeup is hard to find if you have a skin tone that's different than Koreans. From a business perspective that does make sense, given that the society is very homogenous still, but thankfully sites like Coupang and iHerb exist.

Well as Korean, your experience and view of Korea are better than i thought. Since society is very (i felt) rigid and closed to diversity. I thought you felt “Oh.. I dont wanna go there anymore..” Cause I think concept of embracing and being together with difference is pretty lack in this country. (nevertheless I’m Korean, sometimes I feel like I’m alien because soooo homogenous stream in Korea.) But, many Korean want to change these sides. I'm a Korean but I've never heard of a racism against black people here in Korea. We Koreans usually don't see many black people in a daily basis. So we might be glancing you and so on. Individualism is not our thing here in Korea. So some of you might felt uncomfortable but it's not a racism at all. So don't be so mad for those people who felt bad while stayed here in Korea. Of course we are all human beings, but one thing is a fact: we all don't feel and react the same way when we face racist situations. people come from different backgrounds, different environments and have different ways of dealing with problems. Someone might feel down in the dumps over a racial treatment while another person might totally ignore and not even feel bothered. At the end of the day it's best to accept the truth that racism is everywhere and make peace with yourself and not let another person make you feel like a lesser human when they might not even be near as great the person you are.

@@uchenwokike9028 its good to have a positive mindset, but its even wiser to be practical about life as well. Not every racist encounter can be brushed off and overtime living in a place that knocks you down like that can take a toll on your mental health.
You assume that you can always brush it off & move on. What if you are in a situation where you need help and you are denied help because of your race.I feel like if people in a place is racist, then the system of that place is racist as well. Because it's those racist people who make up the system.. A good example is what happened to black people in Ukraine trying to flee war (an extreme example).
So while i agree with you on being positive, i think speaking up and being realistic about experiences goes a long way.
Even trained soldiers get PTSD after being trained for war. Therefore, positive thinking doesn't always work.

Interesting video of your visit to Seoul South Korea. Me and four daughters, 2 grand-children, my older sister, 3 nieces and 2 friends went on an Asian trip this past October. We did Singapore, Thailand and S. Korea in that order. Loved all three countries. I got glances and I did get one stare from an older gentleman when I was walking but when I got closer to him, he actually said hello to me and smiled. Anyways, we were treated well by the hotel staff, store owners, people on the street and we had no issues when we went shopping or ate at a restaurant. I went off on my own using the subway and I got lost and the amount of Korean people I asked questions and all were very nice and helpful and some even came up to me asking if they could help me when was reading the subway map. With all the help I received I made my way back to the hotel safely. We all fell in love with S. Korea. I was somewhat reserved and was expecting to be treated weird because of some of the videos I watch that talked about the stares, and racist experience they had but fortunately, we all did not experience anything negative to report about. Love the visit but I am sure they new we were tourists and as such treated us well. Same in Singapore and Thailand, we were treated very well there. Thank you for sharing your experience and you are very beautiful!

Thank you, that was straight to the point and very informative. I have watched several "BLACK WOMAN" in Korea and Japan UA-camrs and end up unsubscribing. So far it has been 5 where they start out being informative, funny and very insightful until....they start dating. The next thing you know they are including these guys in their videos romanticizing the travel vlog. Next...Something goes wrong the relationship ends and they spend 30 minutes to an hour publicly shaming this boyfriend that they added to their content, for emotionally, mentally and physically abusing them. Then the viewers who are ignorantly encouraged to bash these men based on what the vlogger says and only what the vlogger says turns the whole vlog into a smash and burn a person instead of something more informative or educational. Hate on social media especially UA-cam is rampant
Another Black woman travel vlogger I watch is currently in Japan. Like you she is straight to the point, no drama...all about the travel and opportunities. Of course personal experiences are what enhance the vlog, but not personal experiences that include publicly ranting and shaming your ex-foreign lover.
One Black Woman travel vlogger pretty much co-signed what you said about stereotyping and sexualizing black women in Asia Korean men especially; who are said to see Black women as an experiment or an experience. Romanticizing them based on some K-drama or K-pop could certainly be disappointing to say the least. This is a white western worshipping country; Black and Brown foreigners, not so much. I understand they even discriminate against Koreans with darker complexions and I just learned that from a Korean Vlogger living in Korea.

After my 4 deployments to Iraq,I did 10 yrs as an overseas contracter ( Iraq,Qatar,Kuwaitt & Afganistan ) did sercurity work, mercenary & logistics.Been back in the states for a little over a year now, didn't really want to come back tho.As you know the military left Afganistan and so did the civilian contracters,so here I am.The point I'm trying to make is take chances, leave those COMFORT zones, you don't want to grow old and wish you'd done things when you were young.

Often whenever people talk about Black people in Asian countries, they always talk down to the Asians and speak of them in very objectifying and degrading lights and treat them like monoliths or novelties, or they just go the complete opposite direction and start demonizing them with no nuance in-between. Again, highly appreciate you for not going down that route, especially because of how easy it is to do so.

The staring definitely happens. I would explore and get away from tourist areas. My body fat is very low and I would be followed by big crowds of people sometimes. I even entered stored and couldn't leave because of the crowds that surrounded me. I didn't get offended and nobody ever did anything to me so I just ignored it.

wow yes, thank you for doing this vid. I also have done some research and heard a lot of this same thing. And just to be fair, that stuff the guy talked about on your lunch date, I have had the exact same kinds of conversations with white people here in america... they think they are being casual, inclusive, or sensitive to your situation (sometimes they are being curious or downright nosy about what it's like to be blk). But yea, it's awkward and degrading to always talk about these stereotypical (negative) situations and ideas around dark-skinned folks.
