Trenching in Barn Footing

In this video we show our process of trenching and pouring our footings. These are trenched footings as apposed to formed footings. IN trenched footings the earth becomes the form. We extended our footings above grade, that is above ground level, to form a stem wall of about 8 inches.This will enable us to raise our building above grade so that the dirt around the barn does not make contact with our finished siding which will be metal. To form the top section of the footings we used 'stand-offs' or 'kickers'. These are necessary to move the form stakes back away from the trench. If yo try to place the stake to close the trench is apt to cave off and fill your trench with dirt and the stakes will be unstable. We made these 'kickers' but there are many kinds and configurations. They don't need to be complicated just serve the purpose of moving the stakes back. The trimming on the end of the truck shut helps direct the concrete into the trench footing. Since the trench is only 8 inches wide it is difficult to get the concrete into the forms without something like this. We placed our thermal break on the inside of our forms. For our project this was just 1/4 inch form. It doesn't seem like much but it help stop the transfer of cold or heat through the footing and into the concrete floor. Since our barn will be conditioned space (heating and cooling) this will help improve the overall efficiency of our barn.
