Wow, that's absolutely true. Work requires effort AND time, and sometimes, the work isn't worth the expenditure in time. It took me a lot more orbits around the sun than it did you to learn that, (because I'm cheap, and don't get to sleep very much anyway), but you have to balance between effort and time, and I think you made an excellent choice. (And I've seen videos of "firewood processors" since the dark days before UA-cam, and have always found them interesting to watch, from a "how does this work" perspective.) Firewood cutting is another one of those things that I have no need for but find watching it quite fascinating. Anybody that has Clint cheering for them is a lucky person indeed.
Here in Britain firewood is expensive ( in fact the cost is a pxxs take ) and not easy to come by at source unless you’re a big land owner or in the tree surgery/land clearance trade. I’d say your investment is well worth it especially as you have access to free logs, not to mention it’s a beautiful piece of machinery. Our house is on 5 acres, all forested. We still have two piles of logs from clearing the house site that we are cutting and splitting. The free wood saved us $1,000 in propane last winter to heat the house.
I wish we had something like that when I was growing up. We had a boiler in our basement that would do either coal or wood. I have dim memories of when I was very young of getting coal delivered. I spent most of my growing up years going to fell trees and split them for firewood in the late summer and early fall.
Mike, looking good. You forgot to mention a couple of things (If your sitting in an enclosed cab): One, you don't have to stand out in the rain and cut/split firewood. You don't get full of saw dust. And it is nice and Cool-summer/warm-winter in the cab (Someone may not consider that work 😂😂). BTW: You should get the Head- mount for your camera. That way, we can get a Captain Kleeman perspective view (it will help cuts down on accidental injuries and vertigo .😂😂)!
You can't beat hydraulics to make efficient use of your time !!! Having Logger Wade just down the road is very handy, time efficient and supports the local economy too, although the woodmizer did make some good videos. Back scratching is probably the best way to either borrow or pay for services rendered, both people get what they need without going to the bank 👍😁

To your question “is a firewood harvester worth it?” Absolutely no doubt. Saves your body from wear and tear. Second it’s faster and lastly it takes care of the weight.

So most of the projects I take on at the house use the same sort of reasoning as you do: is doing this myself worth the time, or are there other things I should spend my time on and get someone else to do the other tasks?
I grew up with us heating with firewood… we got a system down after my father fashioned his own woodsplitter (much like DP and MBTS built the tile-plow).. but it still took 5 of us a whole day to do the amount of wood you have there and we all had sore backs… my only complaint.. Where was that when we could have used that in the late 70’s?
The way I paid off my first car was splitting wood then stacking it in neighbors pickup "Old Blue" for 10 dollars per cord.. whew.. okay that was 1988 and I was just turning 18 haha. Neighbor that I bought car from had a side business of selling fire wood, that would pay for his project of rebuilding a convertable GTO..
Hi Mike. Splitting wood is somewhat fun when you want to do it but not much fun when you have to do it. That machine is pretty sweet. Made short work out of that log pile which would have to have been bucked before you could split it by hand. In the rain, that would not be fun. Got my limestone piece the other day. Thank you! -mike
Definitely a time saver, working full time in what is a stressful job sometimes you just need to do things that take your mind of things. Would be interesting to know what the time scales are for replacing the chain, I suppose though that's down to the type of and age of timber. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. I’ve always liked the look of that type of wood processor. Having split wood for heating the house as a kid for many years you never loose appreciation for tools that make a job you’ve done better. One idea you might want to make your own that I’ve seen others do is to make a simple wood carrier to split into. They used a pallet with an upright post at each corner and what looked like snow fence to form a well ventilated box to split into and then move and stack with pallet forks. I could see you setting a pallet or two onto a trailer for delivery. Wishing you and your family the best.
Well Mike, You certainly got comfortable with the processor. Watching you make adjustments when the cut piece got cocked and the short endcuts didn't want to fall right show. As someone who has hand cut and split a few thousand cord of wood in my younger years, I would definitely be considering that processor if I were in need of wood these days. Great video.🤙
Nice attachment. Here in north Atlanta, a cord of oak split and delivered is going for $700. My neighbor brings in 5g a weekend.on average as a.side.gig with firewood.
The guy I used to work for and my sister's ex boyfriend had a towable log splitting rig. You could load few logs at a time on it. Since he had large quantity of wood he wouldn't bother throwing split wood into his boiler but whole bucked logs. His philosophy was that the logs took longer to burn meaning only having to load it up once a day so he would more time doing other things.
To many variables as to whether right or wrong, firebox size and shape vs wood size, seasoned dry split wood vs non seasoned unsplit moisture content etc etc.
For speed later palletize the firewood. 4x4 pallet then shrink wrap makes loading and unloading easier. Also means that you only touch by hand once. Pick the pallet up set it on flatbed strap it down deliver to location and unload pallet. By wrapping it helps keep the weather out and held together for transport and ricked/stacked.
@@robertlukacs1762 yes! That was my primary goal! BUT…if you wrap it when it’s not completely dry, wouldn’t the plastic keep the moisture IN?? I think it may be okay IF you did it in mid-summer AND you made sure it was already REALLY dry. But even then, wrapped in plastic and sitting in heat, I think there’s going to be some condensation. There WILL be some air flow from the bottom of the pallet, but heat rises, so most of the condensation will be at the top, so I’m not sure enough air will get to the top layers to dry it out. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ Maybe sitting in the hot hot sun WILL be enough to dry it out completely??🤷♀️ Yes??? @@patti2413 actually you’re only wrapping the sides so the top and bottom are both open. Once delivered then you cover the top. So you’re question is legit. But as a supplier, it’s a space and time saver. Quick loading onto our flatbed trucks and with our (brain fart) forklift’s. Easy delivery. Our perforated plastic wrap allows some air flow as well. But I was thinking about his situation with limited stuff. As for my biggest customers they have covered section that 4 of my pallets are able to sit in. As for my residence we place them on the side of the house on a concrete pad or edge of driveway. As for wet wood/green it is piled high for a year to dry before we palletize it. And that’s under what we call a portable umbrella just to reduce rainfall.

The Halverson is an awesome tool Mike. A real time & back saver. $60 per cord near you? WOW...a cord is running $225 my way (so many people here heat with wood so it's supply & demand)
The biggest problem see s to be visibility. This is a common problem with most all front mounted tools. My suggestion would be a camera set up on the lift arm(s) or top of the cab. It's not just skid steers either it's all front loader style attachments with a problem.

Do I forsee a trip to see c&c equipment in your future? Not really into cutting wood as most trees in my area have only been planted in the last 150 years and most of the native trees cut down 200 to 500 years ago and they grow so very slowly because of the wind
Would you be able to raise it high enough to process it directly into the dump truck bed? That would be a big time saver! But since you have a bucket loader, you can scoop it up just as easy.
So as I see it, there are 2 more pieces to the puzzle, modifications to the 555 so it can operate the processor (which you mentioned) and getting that dump truck in action so you can split right into it and never touch the wood. Am I right?

i think a saw mill only makes sense if your going to build something yourself such as a shed, workshop or poll barn for your equipment and your budget doesn't allow you to get it professionally built.

Your splitter is a time saver in its own right. Definitely better than swinging a splitting maul.

The variables of type and dirt content from harvest in bark are the factor of time between chain tune

It's not just the time as it is reducing the wear and tear on the body. It's hell getting old.
Does your buddy taking the wood have a trailer? It would be slick to split the wood directly in to trailer for ultimate time efficiency.

If one has access to a skid steer, this would be a great tool for upping your rate of firewood production considerably. I like it.

That plug is they call a cannon plug in the military it’s also known as a shell connector. I believe it’s because Cannon makes them for the military.

i think a saw mill only makes sense if your going to build something yourself such as a shed, workshop or poll barn for your equipment and your budget doesn't allow you to get it professionally built.
