One of the most intriguing things about these videos to me is actually that Kim is styling himself more and more as a western leader in terms of appearance recently which is really interesting
He also spent his Youth in the west correct? And his father was a big fan of western media, at least film. And in addition to this the Juche government has officially announced they are moving away from the "military first" mindset so it makes sense he is leading by example and adopting a more civil appearance. You are still right however as it is definitely interesting.
Doesn't even look western at all. His grandpa kim IL sung has the same attire. Kim might try to present himself as reincarnation of the eternal leader of north Korea Kim IL sung.
According to my book they acquired the design from Libya, they've fitted it to a number of corvettes and missile boats as well as to their export ships to the Myanmar navy
without the fire control and in some cases without targeting radar ("North Korea's armed forces: on the path of Songun" by Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans 2020 ). Aparently they are having problems with producing Radars and modern FCS
" I... I don't know exactly how to put this, sir, but are you aware of what a serious breach of security that would be? I mean, he'll see everything, he'll... he'll see the Big Board!"
Not really, generally each round is loaded into its own little hole inside the ammo box, this is done as another factor to mitigate ammo cook off from enemy fire. The way the panels are placed as well wouldn't make sense either since it kind of looks like they have a wall between them, this wouldn't make sense if these were to be used as blowout panels. Though they could still be ammo storage like on the T90 series of Russian tanks
@christopherhodgdon8638 As far as I understand, a wall separates ready and semi ready racks on Abrams too, so I don't think that would be improbable due to the doors being split. Spacers could come out from above during reloading too. I think it's decently possible this is a bustle.
probably just placed extra composite on older tanks, same like how it is done with many M60 modernizations we see today, aside from FCS and mobility that is, it looks like its built on Chonma with stuff borrowed from Songun.
@@Sinkisink It has 7 road wheels, Chonma-ho has 5 or 6 depending on the model and Songun (Pokpung-ho) has 6. The driver is in the middle, Chonma-ho has the driver on the right side, and Songun in the middle like this new tank. Probably a new chassis based on Songun and T-72 smuggled from Iran or Russia.
My 2 cents that nobody cares about: -Chonma 2 is probably getting its name from the design lineage of using single piece ammo and a manual loader, that's just my guess though. -Just because they're access hatches on the bustle of the turret, it doesn't mean they can't double as blow-off panels. All that blow-off panels functionally are, are slabs of metal that don't allow small caliber gunfire to compromise the ammunition in the bustle, while still being the path of least resistance in an ammo cook-off scenario. If those hatches are still paths of least resistance for an ammo detonation, they do functionally the same work, but also can facilitate the ammo replenishment, which honestly is a clever idea. The real question is whether or not Chonma 2 features blast doors as that's the more important component of the protection equation once any kind of panels or access doors are present. -not only are those single piece ammunition, but they're also semi-caseless ammunition, much like ROK Army's K1A1 or any other Western 120mm smoothbore. It really makes me curious about the dimensions of the shells they use, because it would be funny if they're as different from the Rheinmetal L44 as MG251 on Merkava is. Maybe they intend to use ROK ammo stockpiles in the event of war as they gain ground? I'm not saying that's a realistic expectation, but that's the only idea that seems remotely logical behind the decision and going against just cloning a Russian or Chinese design.
@@nikolaideianov5092 blow-out panels don't need to be. The question is if they're directly connected to the ammo storage and if the fighting compartment has the blast doors, separating the crew from the ammo. So long as those conditions are met, ammo detonation will vent away from the fighting compartment. Assuming that's the case, the real question is how much of the ammo is actually in the bustle, because if these hatches are too small, the explosive force of ammo detonation would make significant pressure on the blast doors. Those hatches may be satisfactory, they might not be satisfactory, it is entirely questionable if DPRK designers did any ammo detonation calculations and simulations at all. Seeing the interior of this tank would tell a lot about what's actually correct to think about it, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.
@@Galatz_Tirah even if they are blow out panels theres probably a lot more ammoin the hull and turret eith out blow out panels Even the abrams and leo2 have hull ammo
@@nikolaideianov5092 quite possible, in which case the question is if the hull storage has blow-off panels, like M1 Abrams does. For all I know I could be entirely wrong and they never even considered ammo detonation as a failure mode they need to account for. All I wanted to point out in the the video is that if those hatches do directly interact with the ammo storage, there's no reason they can't double as blow-off panels. They don't have to be a dedicated piece of technology that serves a singular function.
@@sciencebus3119 its because it’s completely unnecessary to wear down your stabilizer when you aren’t even going to use it. You can see this present on many other tanks too that are in a similar situation. Nobody wants to slowly break their stuff just for show and later waste hours on end to fix/replace it.
just a tiny nitpick, but that ATGM image you have posted with the phrase it was exported is a Bulsae-2, not a Bulsae-3. The Bulsae-2 is a 9K111 either a straight up copy, or a beam riding modification.
Bulsae-4 is Bulsae-2 9M111 with laser beam riding akin to 9M133 while Bulsae-4M is modernized with reduced weight due to more compact launcher with minituarized components.
One of the things about many modern tanks is the inherent weakness of relying on external equipment to see what is going on. A really good operator of a IFV with a high power gun could and has concentrated fire on these vulnerable things. Limiting operability and even forcing tank drivers to open hatches to see/move.
That is not really relevant. The gun laying drive is most likely locked in place and any stabilization is off. Any vibration from the engine would make its way straight to the barrel where it's more visible. A lot of examples of this could be seen on other tanks. Including T-80s/T-90s, Leopards, and personally, i've seen the JGSDF's Type 10 with my own eyes exhibiting the same behaviour. It's not really indicative of anything
its common practice in most eastern countries to turn stabilisers off outside of combat. I don't know why, but i suspect its something to do with the limited depression of T - series tanks bottoming out while going over terrain and causing excessive wear to the mechanism.
From what i can say about chonma meaning, chonma is probably goes chollima a horse with wing in korean culture but it's probably goes to the chollima movement about the rebuilding of north korea after the war and factory production increase
I think the engine being shown is a bit of “fuck you were have your tech, our spies are better than you” sort of thing. If it was actually being used it would be blurred you’d think.
The very impressive thing about this video is the 76 mm naval gun with autoloader. FINALLY they can stop using tank turret for that purpose. And about the new MBT, North Korea are expanding their tank factory in Kusong. most people sadly still dont notice that north korea is actually a pretty big industrial power with a lot of experienced workers, sure, compared to china and the US its nothing, but for its size its pretty great, they also produce multiple military vehicles at the same time, they got a factory for trucks and apc's, they got a factory for their ICBM carriers, they got a factory for their SAM, cruise and guided missile launchers, got a factory for tanks, got a factory for IFV's, and of course the munitions, grenades, small arms, etc, i mean it just makes sense for them to have this industrial capability, they are literally the hermit kingdom and the past 60-70 years of their history have been all about self-reliance and building up their own industry and resources, and make most of, if not everything, themselves for their military, to be completely self reliant and as thus, independent, as thus it doesnt take a bright mind like einstein to figure out that they are a industrially strong nation. i hope people notice it isnt just some shithole nation because in reality it isnt, for what it is, a independent completely self-reliant nation, its doing very very well, just imagine what would happen to lets say, a country of the same size like the netherlands or maybe a bit bigger, britain or france, what would happen if they suddenly got cut off and had to survive on their own, they would face the same issues, if not worse they would have to go thru major industrial build up in order to make everything themselves, then also build up a workforce of intelligent people to become the scientists and researchers to keep up with the rest of the world in development as they cant get foreign technology, and just like north korea the chance they would go into poverty and have food issues are very high if these countries suddenly decided to cut themselves off or be cut off from the rest of the world. and no matter where you look, none of these nations i just named up have been self reliant in well over a thousand years, always surviving on trade, even when ships werent that well developed yet there were caravans from other empires and kingdoms supplying them, japan being one of the few rare cases of being self reliant during that time period, but you can see what happened as result, in the mid 1800s when they made contact with the outside the world saw a japan that was well over 200 years behind in technology and living, a time capsule the size of an entire nation, so its a huge feat north korea, especially in the modern day, is almost completely self reliant and still manages to keep up with modern technology.
I wouldnt go so far as to say they are doing well. They are not starving currently and manage to make an outsized military-industrial complex. That barrel wobble on the parade tank still seems sus af.

Koreans have nuclear programm. Even if they don't have a lot of NPPs producing it, it's still cheap, neighbours can easily help with materials and needed containment technologies are there (They actually built their actual nukes, containment technologies are hard prerequisites). So there is no doubt that DU rods are a game - once you have containment technologies, these are cheaper and easier to produce than the tungsten ones.
There is no reason for north korea to invent a fake tank for a real war, they know what south korea has and they know what its capable of. Therefore they would need their own tank to have any chance of winning, unlike russia north korea has a chance of being removed from the map if they lose a war
to me it seems more like cheaper versions of modern-ish tanks, something like T-72B3 or ZTZ-96A, not really something on par with T-90M or Abrams SEP V3
@@Sinkisink If every production vehicles gets the APS this will very much be a better T-72B3, the only questions is the mobility. If China helped them making good transmissions (like those on the VT and 99A series) then it would be ahead of every T-series tank and equal to Western tanks (then again, if they keep a T-54/Type59 transmission it will still be better than a T-90M in reverse, pretty much everything can achieve more than -4kph).
Hey, RedEffect. There’s a video online of 1 Russian kamikaze tank taking on an entire Ukrainian tank convoy including what said to be 2 tanks, 4 Kazak APC’s and 4 Marder IFV’s, coming out on top in the end. It would be nice if you could analyze what happened and how 1 tank defeated an entire convoy.
Not sure how you concluded that the tank is for ants 🤣. at 1:43 is a mockup, you can see it's size at 8:13 . The size of the tank resembles the t-14 armata or t-90 .
What I could make out of this video, that the tanks in the showroom are really small, it hardly holds one soldier and even then his head would be sticking out and probably his feet too.
It must be noted that the IR sight (or maybe laser rangefinder) on the tank that fires the ATGM is placed differently compared to the others. That makes me think these initial 9 tanks we saw are all prototype tanks not yet in service and that these 9 are all that currently exist. They’ve also continued to modify and install new parts on these vehicles so it’s possible the ones not shown firing are actually not fully functional yet while only 1 is capable of full weapons functionality. I could be wrong but the other non firing tanks don’t even open their optics covers so they could be hollow. Nor do they raise their ATGM launchers.
@@gigl4998it doesn't. Chomna-2 shares more in common with the Chomna-216, the last iteration of the previous Chomna series. The engine bay is nearly the exact same. Songun-915 appears to be an outlier and a sort of semi T-72 clone. The engine bay is closer to being a clone of that seen on T-72s
Whenever Great Porcine Leader is inspecting military equipment giving his expert opinion, the generals always have their little note books out, studiously taking down the pearls of wisdom from Great Porcine Leader.
The thermal sights come from China, an indigenous design based from Chinese and some Russian technology. The engine is an indigenous design based on the MTU diesel engines that China received in the 1980's and 1990's. These are not 100% copies, but indigenous designs that are mostly based on the original foreign product but that utilize components that the North Koreans already have experience and which already have assembly lines for, which is why the engine looks almost identical minus some parts such as the radiator. I'm more surprised and impressed with the wheeled tank destroyer, the tracked mortar or howitzer, and the naval gun turret. Those all seemed like very well fleshed out designs that wouldn't be surprising to see a Western nation produce. I'm not sure, but there also seems to be a model of a tracked SPG that looked similar to a 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV, but due to the angle of the shot, it could have also been the tracked mortar/howitzer taken from an acute angle. Now to the "Cheonma-2". The more you think about it, the more logical it seems that it is a natural progression from the Cheonma to the tank we see today. During the early and late Cheonma modifications, the North Koreans went from cast steel turrets, to composite armor add-ons on top of the cast turret, then to experimenting with mounting ERA. All these steps would logically end in the production and engineering knowledge gained to be able to develop and build a welded turret that contains an internal pocket of composite armor, and then adding ERA to the exterior. Which leads is to the Cheonma-2. You can draw the same straight line of progress when discussing the hull and electronic capabilities of the tank.

More realistically, maybe someone clever with geometry can estimate the dimensions of the room to work backwards to estimate the size of the APFSDS based on how far up the wall it reaches.
they can always buy stuff from china since they are buddies, maybe they are buying either DU or Tungsten to produce these projectiles. Or it could be that these projectiles will never be mass produced so they make it every now and then with DU they have.
@@nech3China isn't likely to commit to strengthening the DPRK that much. They only need them to exist. It is indeed more likely that it's either a DU or steel/tungsten projectile like op said

The reason I say this is because the PROC sees the DPRK as nothing but a border away from the US troops on the Korean peninsula and so doesn't really care if something happens to DPRK. As long as it's nukes can be controlled and used all is well for the PROC and Pm Xi doesn't really like Kim or DPRK that much.

Tank shares way more with Songun-ho than with Chonma-ho in my opinion, i don't know why they named it like that...
Couldn’t they just be blow out panels that can be opened like a storage box? This way the tank could be loaded more easily
At last, we have unlocked the mysteries of paper mache and temu brand duct tape.
So all in all it does look like a modern tank, well done NK.
probably just placed extra composite on older tanks, same like how it is done with many M60 modernizations we see today, aside from FCS and mobility that is, it looks like its built on Chonma with stuff borrowed from Songun.

My 2 cents that nobody cares about:
-Chonma 2 is probably getting its name from the design lineage of using single piece ammo and a manual loader, that's just my guess though.
I dont think they are blow out panels
They dont look connected to the tank well enough
It looks connected like well a storige box
@@Galatz_Tirah even if they are blow out panels theres probably a lot more ammoin the hull and turret eith out blow out panels
Even the abrams and leo2 have hull ammo
@@nikolaideianov5092 quite possible, in which case the question is if the hull storage has blow-off panels, like M1 Abrams does. For all I know I could be entirely wrong and they never even considered ammo detonation as a failure mode they need to account for. All I wanted to point out in the the video is that if those hatches do directly interact with the ammo storage, there's no reason they can't double as blow-off panels. They don't have to be a dedicated piece of technology that serves a singular function.

One of the things about many modern tanks is the inherent weakness of relying on external equipment to see what is going on. When ur tank barrel wobbles like 0:30 going 3mph on a flat road you know you have a good tank.
That is not really relevant. The gun laying drive is most likely locked in place and any stabilization is off. Any vibration from the engine would make its way straight to the barrel where it's more visible.
A lot of examples of this could be seen on other tanks. Including T-80s/T-90s, Leopards, and personally, i've seen the JGSDF's Type 10 with my own eyes exhibiting the same behaviour.

most people sadly still dont notice that north korea is actually a pretty big industrial power with a lot of experienced workers, sure, compared to china and the US its nothing, but for its size its pretty great, they also produce multiple military vehicles at the same time, they got a factory for trucks and apc's, they got a factory for their ICBM carriers, they got a factory for their SAM, cruise and guided missile launchers, got a factory for tanks, got a factory for IFV's, and of course the munitions, grenades, small arms, etc,
i mean it just makes sense for them to have this industrial capability, they are literally the hermit kingdom and the past 60-70 years of their history have been all about self-reliance and building up their own industry and resources, and make most of, if not everything, themselves for their military, to be completely self reliant and as thus, independent, as thus it doesnt take a bright mind like einstein to figure out that they are a industrially strong nation.
i hope people notice it isnt just some shithole nation because in reality it isnt, for what it is, a independent completely self-reliant nation, its doing very very well, just imagine what would happen to lets say, a country of the same size like the netherlands or maybe a bit bigger, britain or france, what would happen if they suddenly got cut off and had to survive on their own, they would face the same issues, if not worse
they would have to go thru major industrial build up in order to make everything themselves, then also build up a workforce of intelligent people to become the scientists and researchers to keep up with the rest of the world in development as they cant get foreign technology, and just like north korea the chance they would go into poverty and have food issues are very high if these countries suddenly decided to cut themselves off or be cut off from the rest of the world.
and no matter where you look, none of these nations i just named up have been self reliant in well over a thousand years, always surviving on trade, even when ships werent that well developed yet there were caravans from other empires and kingdoms supplying them, japan being one of the few rare cases of being self reliant during that time period, but you can see what happened as result, in the mid 1800s when they made contact with the outside the world saw a japan that was well over 200 years behind in technology and living, a time capsule the size of an entire nation, so its a huge feat north korea, especially in the modern day, is almost completely self reliant and still manages to keep up with modern technology.
I wouldnt go so far as to say they are doing well.
They are not starving currently and manage to make an outsized military-industrial complex.

Koreans have nuclear programm. Even if they don't have a lot of NPPs producing it, it's still cheap, neighbours can easily help with materials and needed containment technologies are there (They actually built their actual nukes, containment technologies are hard prerequisites).
