Hello, fellow choir people! This video has gained so much traction the past few years and I keep getting enquiries (pun intended) about monetary compensation for it, if I have a Patreon, UA-cam community, etc, so you can show me your support. I am incredibly honoured to get these questions and I have thought a lot about what to do with it. My conclusion is... for now, I will not be making that kind of a platform, because I don't want to make you pay for (extra) videos: I always wanted this channel to be free for all, I work full time as a choir director and this channel is not something that I can count on when it comes to money (I currently earn around 35 USD a month on it), plus ... I am not a fan of subscriptions myself :D However, I turned on the Super Thanks option so you can contribute if you really wish to - it's under the video, in the extra options menu: the button is "Thanks". This way you choose if you want to and it's not a subscription, it's a one-time thing! Thank you all for acknowledging this video and supporting the channel. Love to all of you
I'm currently co-leading my choir due to sickness, and I found this video really clear, concise, and perfect for helping me step up from member to temporary conductor. Thank you!
Me, too, Joanna, I've been watching our conductor for many years and all of a sudden, with his illness, I'm "it". Iva, thanks for the video which was enormously "real world" and practical.
Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I was asked this morning to conduct the church choir but I have never done that before! I have been singing in a choir for a long time though and I can confirm that a conductor is essential. Thank you for the very good pieces of advice 😊🎼
Thank you Eva for this tutorial. I really found it helpful since I have had to step in as conductor of my synagogue choir due to illness. As a CPA and therapist I do not have prior training in this capacity but I do have music appreciation and have sung in choirs. The conducting is all new to me. With your guidance I will be able to do more and will not confuse the singers with excess movements.
Thank you so much for this ! I sang a lot in choirs myself but never conducted and I would like to animate some choir workshops for people who are not musicians at all, so this is just perfect for me to begin with, you're very clear, pedagogical and encouraging so thanks a lot, and I'm definitely going to watch more of your videos !
Thank you so much for the amazing comment, it means a lot to be recognized like that! :) especially because I really tried to make this accessible! Best of luck with your workshops!! :)
I can't really thank you enough. I am about to get the chance to finally be a music teacher, but I am definitely an amateur. I am excited, but also nervous. But your videos are equpping and encouraging me. Thank you again!
I am conducting a piece tomorrow in church, for the first time, and as much as I have sung all my life, I don't know anything and this has just simplified everything, I understand what the to do with the time signatures and their effect, and I will survive...thanks a lot Miss
oh, sorry to get to this comment this late, I hope everything went ok! thank you for the comment, I truly appreciated it and I am happy the video helped!
This was so helpful, thank you. Rock drummer and singer thrust into the role of choir teacher at my school and I had no idea what I was supposed to do.
Hi, amateur choir singer here! Thanks so much for the detailed technical descriptions -- they're actually pretty helpful for singers, too; should show this to all my singing buddies :D I'm new to your channel, so I haven't seen many videos yet, but the opening of this video made me think: could you make a video talking about the importance of the conductor as emotional support for their lil singing kids (meaning adults too :D)? I know you talked about this a little bit in your covid video, but not sure if you've dedicated more time to the topic specifically. I know that for me the conductor is a precious barrier between me and the audience, giving me something to focus on and keeping me thinking about the music, instead of going crazy with nerves or stage fright. Eye contact, little smiles of support, all of these things help immensely, and an empathetic, supportive conductor makes the whole experience of rehearsal and performance actually enjoyable.
Hello, thank you for the comment! First of all - great name :) I agree with you, the emotional component is such a big part of conducting! I will be happy to make a video about this soon, so thank you for the suggestion. There are 2 videos here on the channel - How to handle your choir's stage fright and How to gain your choir's trust, which I think could be helpful as well. During this covid time, I've been really surprised to see how much my emotional support means to my choir singers - even without the choir being active! So there is something to be said about the importance of a supportive conductor, we can't always anticipate how far that can take us. Stay tuned for the video, and thank you for being here! Best regards
I'm the piano accompaniment for the choir, but the conductor will be absent, so that's why I'm here, and it really helps for my first time. Thanks so much.
I really enjoyed your instructional video. I have just been given the joy of direction our little singing group at our retirement home. I think there may be around 8-12 members ages between 64-89. These folks just sing for fun and companionship. The former director is a retired elementary school band teacher. I trained for choral conducting in college. However, that was 038 years ago. I'm a little rusty! You beginner video was just right! It brought it all back Now, I am a long choral singer and know how to follow a director even if it's just the expression on his face. They don't know what they have to follow yet. My predecessor was basically hand waver and they felt they didn't need to watch him. Then, I took over for our Christmas program. Their attitude changed a little. I showed more skill and gave them a few cues to follow. Their sound improved. They became excited. They told me that I looked like I knew what I was doing! That just tickled me pink! What advice could you offer me about directing seniors?
I am so sorry for being so late for this, I have been absent from the channel, it's been a difficult year. This comment made me smile so much, actually my first job was being an accompanist for a senior choir, and I swear I learned from them the most when it comes to choirs. I will make a video with advice for you in the following weeks, please let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer. I hope things have been going well for you and your seniors, good luck! Iva
I appreciate your effort in making this! I am now equiped with much more knowledge in conducting a choir. I hope I could see you conducting a choir in the future
My choir is coming back after 7 month break with COVID. I came searching for videos to more efficiently use our rehearsals and get myself back in the groove. I appreciate your clear communication and all the useful information. I subscribed for more!
Thank you so much for the comment. I hope you are still able to rehearse and to see your choir. It's been a difficult year, I still haven't been able to see my choirs after 9 months. Hoping for the best in the new year
Do it in the dark...lol. This entire video has some really good advice, thank you! Could you do a video on "How to conduct a kid's choir"? If it is any different?
This is a great video, just what I needed to conduct a Kids Christmas chorale group! Wish me luck! Love all your little tips and advice. I will watch this video a few more times and then try it out! ❤️
I have been asked to assist in creating a children’s choir at church. While I have been teaching piano and music theory classes for over 35 years, this is a whole new challenge! I am super excited about working with the kids for a Christmas Eve performance. I am so grateful for this video and agree with your clear and communicative direction! Thank you! Brenda - I see this comment was left two years ago. How did your performance go? 🎹🙋🏼♀️
Bula from Fiji. Thank you. I find this very helpful and meaningful especially when I'm very new at this.. God Bless and looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Wow, Thank you so much for making this video, I will watch it many times because I am not a quick learner but everything you say is this video is so on-point. You know exactly what your saying. Our little church choir needs a conductor and it seems I have to step up. Thank you again.
thank you, I am glad it's been helpful! I am a little late with replying, but I hope things are going great with your choir :) It's not easy stepping up so stay strong! Kindest regards
Thank you for this video, I had a great understanding of conducting due to my experience in my high school choirs, as my choir is known around the nation that also meant we watched our conductor a lot, but there were some points where the conduction hadn’t made any sense, but now I fully understand some things I questioned, thank you so much.
Thank you so much! I've been in choir since I was quite little but I'm now in a position to maybe lead a Christmas choir and I wasn't sure where to start. I had a basic idea but this really helped clarify a lot for me. Thank you so much!
Very helpful! I am a beginner as well and I have taken some conducting lessons but I like the way you explain it more! Thank you! Please continue to upload more videos! Blessings!!!
