- Skin cancer is a serious disease that occurs when skin cells grow and multiply in an uncontrolled and disorderly way. New skin cells form when cells grow old and die or become damaged. But when this natural process stops working the way it should, the rapid growth of cells results.
The rapid growth of skin cells may be noncancerous, which doesn't spread or cause harm or maybe cancerous in some cases, spread to nearby tissue or any other parts of the body if not detected early and cause harm.
Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun is considered the most common cause of skin cancer. Data suggests that nearly one in every five people develop skin cancer sometime in their life.
There are three main types of Skin Cancer:-
1. Basal Cell Cancer
2. Squamous Cell Cancer
3. Melanoma Cell Cancer
Basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer are the most common types of skin cancer. They are sometimes called non-melanoma skin cancer. However, Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and is likely to spread to organs beyond the skin, making them difficult to treat or potentially life-limiting.
Dr Mandeep Malhotra, the Director of the Oncology Department at CK Birla Hospital, says in the video that most skin cancer can be cured if identified and treated early. He further adds that it's extremely important to take precautions and talk to the medical expert if you experience any signs or symptoms of skin cancer.
