Toby was raised a Christian so he's definitely put a few things in there, that and deltarune, I mean even in deltarune a character even has a cross. As much as people don't want to admit to the fact that he's referenced Christianity alot in his games, it's there.
undertale has taken a lot from the bible, i mean, asriel being a reference to azreal the angel of death, asgore being a literal encarnation of the devil (antrophomorfic goat that lives under the earth has a trident and fire powers) and a lot of other stuff that goes unmentioned, like, the importance of the number 7 (seven souls to broke the barrier, 7 is the number of god, perfection)
yeah, a lot of stories take things like that from biblical mythology-esque stories, but my focus was more on biblical themes than references. Good points though!
Absolutely FANTASTIC video man! I'm an outspoken Christian as well and Undertale is one of my favorite games of all time! I'm not sure why I haven't drawn the many connections that this game pulls from the Bible, but it also goes to show that it's basically impossible to write a story that DOESN'T point to the Bible to some degree. Also, BIG props to the way you handled the discussion of homosexuality at the end of the video. Being honest and not shying away from what God says is true is so honorable. Especially in the communities that I know you and I are both apart of, it takes some big courage to say things how they are. Keep it up man, I'm definitely a fan!
I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYONE DO A VIDEO OF UNDERTALE IN A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE BEFORE. AS A CHRISTIAN I WANNA SAY THIS IS SUPER HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO!! AND THAT I ENJOY YOUR CONTENT!! :DD
I think my mom and the Bible said it best with this quote: "The path to heaven is never the path filled with roses, but the path filled with thorns." Undertale's pacifist route is hard to do with low HP and tough boss battles, but feels more fulfilling even if you don't know everything about the characters. Genocide seems rewarding in regards to the lore, but at what cost? In real life, it's similar to how the man downstairs work by pulling you in to a false sense of security until it's too late and your soul is condemned (basically like Pinocchio's Pleasure Island). Great video and God bless you!! Amen!!! 🙏😊
A powerful message is when you do the neutral ending and the fixed Mercy button appears in the screen and Flowey doesn't understand why you spare him. Although I am not a Christian I see many Christian motifs in this game, though many may be unintended. Morever, it is what you said, many elements are present in other religions too. I am a jew and I felt this with the ethlical choices you have to make through the game. Toby Fox is "like a God" in this game , he puts good and evil and he encourages to choose good through all the story. And in the end...most of the people forgives Asriel, it is the natural thing to do. It is an instanct. Obviously a gamer wants to know everything about it , even the genocide route, but catches message. If real life was a game it would be pointless, saving and loading every now and then. That 's the final point, live life doing the right thing, and then leave it .
The thing is that doing bad things can FEEL rewarding If there wasnt any appeal to it people wouldnt do them And while everything would be better if everyone did the right thing(the True Pacifist essencially) bad things and actions still create unique interactions and put people to the test in real life, so aside from it being a game, it would be desingenuous if the game did NOT show you this side in the Genocide Route That said, in the end you're always left empty Literally, the entire universe in Undertale is left a empty void because of you, which reflects very well the result of your actions I highly recommend Radiarc's "Temptation" video where they tried to convey this and the commenters summed up very well what is represents The difference between what is good and what feels good
Regarding the Undyne/Alphys criticism, how would you even write a "same sex relations=bad" Aesop through a not-specifically Christian lens and which shows whatever natural consequences of their actions?
God created man and woman to be in just one single relationship: male and female. Not male and male, nor female and female. The only reason why any of this stuff exists to this day is because of Genesis 3: The Fall.
I am not Christian, I’m a Muslim. But it’s interesting to see how similar other religions beliefs are to mine. There are just something’s we can all agree about and be inspired by.
One thing to add onto this; the pacifist run (sort of) mirrors that of the life of a Christian. It’s not easy, but it gets you the best ending by reaching the surface (heaven) and everyone you saved goes free. And if you do the genocide run, it’s mirrors that of a life without God. you get the bad time treatment from Sans, like a hell of sorts. Heck, even when Chara erases your save in the end, it’s mirrors that of the “second death” mentioned in revelations. (Which by that point, there is no turning back, you can’t get a happy ending anymore).

I think while Toby isnt christian the game does go out of his way to reference Christianity Im not talking about the message of mercy and forgiveness as if thats just a christian thing, though I wholly agree with you on this video Rather things like how the messianic saviour of the monsters is represented as an angel who is a trinity(literally a winged triangle) and how Asriel-Flowey is a literal scapegoat while Chara is a metaphorical scapegoat and both of them alongside you form this angelic trinity that may choose to fulfill this messianic role of saving all monsters or "save" them by - as the Bible puts it - putting then through the sword(or knife in this case) becoming the angel of death(as Gerson himself says) with Chara even calling themselves a demon by the end of it That plus both you(Frisk) and Chara being the Fallen Human, a neat reference to both fallen angels(with you two literally being THE angel of that world, alongside Asriel) and the biblical fall of humanity, with humans literally falling! Of course, I dont think the game was made with christians as an audience in mind, very sure things like Alphys & Undyne as a pairing or everything about Mettaton wasnt made to please (fundamentalist) christians But I still think it was a influence, Toby must have thought the symbolism was neat and if thats the case I agree with him Overall I think Undertale embodies the values of our modern society, which is very liberal and has a great emphasis on things like empathy & tolerance, with a complicated relationship with religion but still very influenced by christian themes & ethics(as we often see with superheroes such as Spider Man) I also find hilarious how Matpat gave Undertale to the Pope, I know, someone haaad to bring it up. But really for me thats going full circle, it was the year of mercy when he did so and considering Toby himself said he felt honored by the act I dont think there's any arguing against it , it was awesome

I found this video pretty good. I agree that the mercy and forgiveness themes in Undertale reflect Christian themes due to the choice to forgive Asriel and choosing to not solve problems with violence, but with different actions, trying to be a peacemaker rather than someone who is violent. I also like how you brought up the topic of homosexuality; I found it respectful. Maybe if you want to, you could bring up Christian themes in other games you like, if you can think of any? Just a thought. It's up to you what you want to put on your channel, afterall.
Thank you so much! I have considered the idea of making a similar video like this about other games too, but I don't know when I will get around to it. I imagine I'll do one on Deltarune once that's completely finished, but who knows how long that will be lol. The other game that I've considered doing is The World Ends With You, so I might do that eventually.

@@AldinRamic I suppose, but again this would heavily imply Alphys wants to also kill everybody. & guess I can't debunk that beyond it being odd a Monster would want to genocide. Possible, but with Gaster also perhaps losing sympathy I find him to be far more likely.
not a christian, but I heard that the section in the bible condemning homosexuality was a mistranslation. unsure if this is true but just wanted to mention this here just in case! hope you have a good day!
I'm sure many people have tried to claim that, but the Bible has been translated and retranslated so many times that I kind of doubt it. Plus, many of the people who teach the Bible are required to be formally trained to read the original Hebrew and Greek.
There wasn't word "homosexual" in the bible up to ~1900-1945 because it is an english word. Before that there were verses with greek word that means "men/women" and "bed".
I don’t think Asriel gets stuck as Flowey. Part of the games’ theme is Humans’ DETERMINATION and their ability to change fate. I highly doubt Frisk leaves him to that fate especially since he doesn’t deserve it (as no one could have avoided becoming that in his condition.)
Deltarune is a very interesting game so far in the way that it portrays religion, but it's hard to make a definitive analysis of it until the game's finished. So far though it seems like it is not trying to portray Christianity itself, but rather a fictional religion with Christian elements, since that is the religion that most of the general public will be most familiar with. In that case, it will probably go down the same route that many stories that fictional religions do, which is to reveal that the god they worship is either not real or evil/manipulative in some way. Which is actually ultimately an accurate reflection of reality, since any religion that has similarities to Christianity but also has fundamental differences would be considered a cult lol. But in terms of the overall themes I haven't seen any red flags yet.

not a christian, but I heard that the section in the bible condemning homosexuality was a mistranslation. unsure if this is true but just wanted to mention this here just in case! hope you have a good day!
Yeah there are multiple sections and they are all correctly translated
It isn’t true, and any Hebrew scholar can confirm that ;)
I don’t think Asriel gets stuck as Flowey. Part of the games’ theme is Humans’ DETERMINATION and their ability to change fate. I highly doubt Frisk leaves him to that fate especially since he doesn’t deserve it (as no one could have avoided becoming that in his condition.)
I'm a Christian and this game is the beast I recommend this
This is DOPE!!

Even if I'm not a Christian I still like it
nice video man! how do you feel about deltarune? i just want to make sure i’m playing a game that’s not going against God

Undertale is less of christian game then it is a gnostic one imo
out of curiosity, what exactly do you mean?
@@philgaimz9847 "Gnosticism , Religious and philosophical movement popular in the Roman world in the 2nd-3rd century AD." - Brittanica.
