- It's fairly uncommon for two illustrators to work together on the same projects, although I've covered a few such partnerships in the unsung heroes series and plan on featuring a handful more down the line.
But the creative partnership of Heinrich Lefler and Joseph Urban is one that produced some spectacular results in the late 19th and early 20th century. And the work they produced together - or individually for that matter - doesn't get the attention and respect it deserves. So I hope this serves to bring their illustrations to a wider audience.
How can it be possible that I have not heard of these two master-illustrators? What a fabulous set of examples of their artworks you have curated for us. The high quality of your presentations and the insight you provide are priceless. Thanks Pete.
Hi Mark and thanks a lot. It was probably only a couple of years ago I encountered their work, and it really does beggar belief that they are so unknown. Getting information about them was particularly diffficult.
Their association with the ancien régime, possibly.
Their work together & separate is .. Amazing & Wonderful ❤️.... Urban also designed for the " Ziegfeld Follies."..... you left that out .... just my opinion... Thank you........

Another jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring revelation, that simply defies comprehension at how this gifted pair remain so relatively obscure.
From the earlier illustrative Jugendstil masterpieces and marvelously ornamented calendar work (as well as the borderless plates) to the latter, more graphically-oriented renderings of US-period Urban, I am overwhelmed that so many layers of beauty remain to be peeled back into view--thank you for taking that mission upon yourself, and executing it so faithfully, episode-after-episode!
What can be said other than that you have a genius (and a forensic determination) for uncovering the sublime, and your always on-point commentary are a delight and a continued education of the highest order. Thank you, Pete, for adding to the already priceless treasure-trove that is this channel!

Thank you, Pete, for this collaborative duo! - like what we are familiar with, say comic book artists (pencils - inking - colouring - lettering), I wasn't aware that two or more artists worked together on one illustration!
Some of the linework and colours were so Mucha and Klimt, but the surprise, for me, were the marvelous architectural compositions!
(Well, okay, Urban did the Mar-a- Largo, for the excesses of the Gilded Age of the US, and it has reached its crescendo with the current resident, who allegedly gold plated a lot of the interiors...)

OMG! This one took a long time to make to the end as I paused and perused almost every rendering! The pen work was breathtaking! Did anyone else notice the shadow of an adoring couple in the line-work within The Princess and the Swineherd? I had to look several times to find 'him!'
Their masterful pen work reminded me of one of my first and favorite penmen from my youth: Franklin Booth. Tnx! Mr. Beard!!

I covered Franklin Boothe in unsung heroes 8, and as I'm doing with others I find myself wondering if I might be able to do a solo video. I'll see how much more information and imagery I can dig up.

Amazing doesn't begin to describe their work from Viennese Art Nouveau to Maxfield Parrish to Arthur Rackham, Velaquez, Flemish painting to ... Mar a Lago which Urban designed the interior and exterior decorations.

Both Lefler and Urban were outstanding illustrators, but Urban was particularly remarkable for his reputation as a theater designer and architect. It must be rare for a an illustrator to excel in another field. A great video, Pete! I much enjoyed it.

And oddly several of the illustrators I've covered in the channel so far actually trained as architects or interior designers.I suppose it's similar to how many started out as artists and then converted to illustration. And then converted back again at the end of their lives.

Great video as usual. This channel as a whole is a great resource.
It might sound silly but sometimes it's hard to imagine people have been drawing since the beginning of human history. It's frightening to think of what has been lost to time. All the more reason to celebrate what has survived.
Hello and many thanks for your comment. And what you say is true. Particularly in the case of illustration, which has always been undervalued and such a lot of original artwork has been destroyed. At least we have the printed versions in most cases so I'm grateful for small mercies.

The sudden incursion of Trump was a surprise! But this partnership of illustration is so beautiful; I especially love that technique where grungy greys are juxtaposed with light bright watercolour, enhancing its translucent glow. Like in the Sleeping Beauty illustration. Thank you again.

After deep dives into solo artists is a nice change of pace to show the wonders of teamwork specially when both artists are already more than capable to do amazing works by themselves.
Hello again and thanks. When I was in my 20s I worked with another illustrator on the same projects for a few years. But in the end we couldn't stand working together and went our separate ways. I don't know how they did it so long and so well.
Another stunning video! Thanks for featuring two such talented illustrators who passed me by unnoticed. I really should spend more time on the Continental artists, obviously there is more to the Golden Age than just US and UK artists. Although, the border designs are a bit reminiscent of Morris and Burne-Jones books, another famous pair. Thanks for the five star production.

Hello and although I had heard of Mar A Lago and knew that 45 lived there I hadn't realised it had some historical significance. It looks like a smaller version of my own home...
To lovers of the golden age: There is an original Aurther Rackham up for auction at Heritage auction house this April 2023. It looks much different than most of his work. 1903 Hans Christian cover I think.
It makes one wonder if their ailments began prior to or after the parting of the two creatives, and if they needed the space or missed each other sorely.
Such a powerful bond in collaboration recalls to mind something I have heard several times in the past.
When you said their work was so similar that it was practically interchangeable, it reminded me that an old friend used to quote someone he had heard say-- "You can do anything you want in life, as long as you don't mind who gets the credit."
(Or the blame, depending on your motive, I suppose.)

As I watch these wonderful videos, so richly researched and narrated, I find myself wondering where are these artworks all being archived, and is there a coffee table book to made? It also dawns on me just how dependent artists were on the classic stories of the day as compared to the Marvel and DC comic book characters of the present. How the evolution of print work and design can be chronicled through the years ...how they all influenced each other. You make me think Mr. Beard - and I thank you!
Hello again and thanks a lot for your comment. If I cause viewers to think more about this subject then I'm quite proud of that. But one small note - the superhero and villain comics you mention seem to me to be heavily reliant on works such as Homer's Oddysey and the Nordic myths and many other classical works too, even if they don't admit where their ideas came from.

Six stars for this one! These guys were masters of all styles from Art Nouveau back to the medieval arrangement-of-pictures images, and used those different styles to cross-fertilize their completed works in the same way their combined talents complemented each other! And could anyone do flat black drawings of medieval/fantasy subjects and NOT look like an imitation of Beardsley? They could!

Thanks a lot for your comment, and in general there are very few illustrators who have collaborated with another, and in most cases they would be husband and wife or twins. Precisely who did what in this double act remains quite hard to work out.

My brain is telling me that there are hidden images within almost every illustration. Study the princess in the Princess and the Swineherd cover. Notice what seems to be four legs, as if someone is behind her? Explains the expression on her face. Most are more subtle and require extensive study, perhaps even rotating or viewing from the back. Pay close attention to patterns and the dresses. Light images on thin paper might be combined with the page underneath. Borders aren't exempt, either. Bring together opposite edges, and. . .who knows? Plausible deniability or ??? Were buyers in on the secret? Commenters will say if you're looking for something you will find it. Perhaps. Might explain why two or three heads (Lefler's father) were needed to plan and execute. Another fascinating installment, Pete!

And you know, i might actually enjoy opera if those early set designs were part of the proceedings. Not so into the art deco abstractions. Very entertaining the part about Mar a Lago.
Hello and thanks a lot for the appreciation. As a self confessed philistine I have to say I never could get along with opera, and even those sets wouldn't be able to persuade me. I'd rather endure a colonoscopy without sedation.
@@petebeard I could never get why opera was popular. I get it now and I still don't like it. It's very high level schmaltz, for people that aren't particularly musically attuned, but go there because it's associated with high status and it comes with a lot of spectacle to be immersed within. This isn't to say that there hasn't been a lot of talent involved in either the writing of these huge passages of music, or in the singers and and musicians themselves who maintain the tradition to this day. I just don't get moved by it, I find it cheap and cheesy and I want something on a deeper aesthetic level. For all music like this when I mock it I have a go to saying that I will sing in the style of whatever music is being parodied, "Oh over heeere, Oh over theeerrre". Pretty much sums it up. That said, the masses are differently disposed, so i've learned to be somewhat sympathetic to their pastimes. And certainly it would be sad if this sophisticated European tradition was subverted or replaced by bongo dance troops or whirling turks or something. So i'm glad it's still there, even if I don't like it very much, if you can understand that sentiment. We've already lost so much of what is truly ours. Your channel is filled with such examples for how the 20th century robbed us of our innate sense for design and stupefied it to almost the level of a toxic coma. Circling back to the original point. I think i'd like to see those opera backdrops in place during a production from the time. They were very clever in the way they were used, before the age of cinema, to create and artistically considered, sense of place for the performers to operate within. Even with little mechanical tricks and so forth. Anyway, all the best, sorry for the wall of tangent.

Hello and yes the Grimms stories have been immensely popular as ubjects ever since they were first printed. There's so much visual material from dark to light for any illustrator to explore in their work.

Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation. I would happily add refernces in the videos to where they might be seen in the real world, and I have done so in a couple of cases. But in all honesty many of them (Urban and Lefler included) appear to not have a museum where they are on display. Or more accurately if there is one nobody has told me about it. So, frustratingly your guess is as good as mine. Personally I find it highly annoying that so little seems to be thought about so many of these great illustrators, especially in Britain and Europe.

It was a download from youtube which did not specify the individual pieces, and came under the rather unhelpful generic title 'Mozart String Quartets'. And my knowledge of classical music is roughly equivalent to my knowledge of nuclear physics...

Abdulcelil Levni, a miniaturist from 18th century and Siyah Qalam from 15th century. Both have vere distinctive stlye. Thank you for the effort you put in your videos. Regards.

Predicatably I had never come across them before and I'm very pleased you have introduced me to their work. Siyah Qalam I find particularly interesting and the style resonates with both chinese and european prints of around the same period. Let's hear it for lifelong learning.

But whoever did wasn't credited so I couldn't give them a namecheck

May be the other way around as Gustav Klimt admired Lefler if you look at Klimt's earlier work and an art style called Makart.
