Best planet x album, really above 1st & quantum. The best 🙏
Same, it's the jazziest of all 3 albums, Universe was also really cool but Quantum was too gritty for my liking
Amazing that these guys wrote this music almost 20 years ago. Truly ahead of their time.
Remo Led Zeppelin were ahead of their time. These boys are ahead of their species.
I don’t think this music is bound to any year or era. This level of understanding music complex writing never gets retired.
They were either ahead of their time or 50,000 years behind their time. I feel like the dinosaurs were jamming to this.
@@RivalD666 Led Zeppelin...greatest plagiarists ever...ahead of their time lol!
What an amazing piece of music. I heard it for the first time in 2008 and I still love it like I did back then.
I think Derek said he wanted to show them. And he did. 👍
This is the best music album in the world by far.
I was disappointing when Derek left DT and then so grateful this album release. It's more than a blessing in disguise.
I was disappointed when Derek left Platypus .Two completely different minds , Derek and Ty clinched .
Saw this tour Moonbabies Planet X in a bar in PA! No lie about a crowd of if lucky 50 standing maybe! I was an inch away from DS keys! Lucky to have met them all after the show were great down to earth peeps! Virgil D was soaked didn't stay. This same night "Niacin Band" BSheehan DChambers Navello was playing in Philly I had a choice to make and this was it. About 10ft from Virgs playing and Tony who is legend. Just crazy my friends band drew more locally damn shame
Derek s removal from DT was a blessing though loved his playing in DT. We have so much great solo work.. Insane line ups doing his shit for the players
Guitarists should check out dave weckl vinnie coliuta and Sean reinert lenny white simon Phillips billy cobham Jimmy chamberlin Lot of great fusion tracks from them.
In my opinion this is by far the most musical advance music in prog metal/fusion , its beyond all groups compositions in the style , all the things are in the correct place in the correct moment ,with a lot of brain and taste too, after 20 years it is still unbeatable in disruptive terms
I wanna agree but I'm also searching for a counter point but Virgil donati is just too good
Hello. Have you ever listened to Spastic Ink and Gordian Knot?? Their works were quite advanced as well.
@@dreamsdreams9493 Hell no... Due to Virgil Donati Planet X is in other league.
LTE is returning, so we need Planet X to return too. Two amazing instrumental prog projects
Absofuckinglutely! I know Derek is busy with Sons but Planet X was instrumental pun intended in getting me into more fusion and complex music. I’ve been listening to them since their inception and a new album with the original trio would be heaven sent!
@@Minotauro_di_Chieti xD
Personally, I would say that to say: "LTE's return sucks major donkey balls" would be somewhat of a little exaggeration.. xD But I get the point, man, I get the point :D ;)
Fusion + METAL
The drums are especially good.
@@fransj8735 He also did Live From Oz which is of remarkable quality for a live recording
And let's not forget the actual drummer: Virgil Donati.
Man's a machine.
@@dewittk9404I honestly think Live From Oz is the best live recorded album I’ve ever heard. It’s crisp, clear and so well mixed. It’s an album from Planet X within itself
Tom Kennedy is one of favorites best bass players in the World. I saw him live with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl what a monster musician
I got to take lessons with Tom. I'm a drummer but thru my jazz program at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He kicked my ass.
He’s brilliant! One of the best players of all time. I can always tell it’s him, he’s got a signature sound
One of the best albums ever. Can listen to it all day every day and never get tired of it
Absolutely lucky to have seen them with about ... No lie 40-50 people that's it! Literally inches from Derek... Met everyone after the show... Virgil didn't hang he was drenched lol Humble guys
Met Virgil at a Simon Phillips show. Sitting by himself at the bar. Had to talk to him. Met him again backstage at a show he was at to see Derek, Doug Aldrich and Gregg Bissonette. Super friendly guy. Very mellow and NO ego.
i was there...all dudes...crazy only 50 people saw the opening night...just let's you know quality doesnt end in Bieber!
Funny side note.. on same damn night in Philly not far from West Chester PA... Niacin was playing! Had to think for a second .. but I chose correctly with Planet X on the right show!
"the noble savage" has one of the most incredible and astonishing intro I've ever heard...20 years from the fist time I listened and still impressed every time again...
I remember seeing them when I was attending Musician Institute when I was a student. They were performing this cd before it was released. An amazing experience!!! I’m a big Tony MacAlpine fan for years.
Personally my favorite Planet X album. Killer sound and fusion vibe.
Es imposible escuchar una sola composición, es como una obligación escuchar el álbum. Una obra maestra ❤
I remmember listening to this album in 2002, again, again, again... As a dream theater fan, it was at that time the best discover I could have. Another level of progression, more sofisticated. And I also knew virgil donati, one of the best drummers ever.
I started with Scenes From A Memory and when this passed by my radar I was floored! I know every guitar, keyboard, bass and drum part at this point, I’ve listened to it so many times. It’s etched in my brain for all eternity and I love this album even right now and forever!
i used to listen to dream theater thinking they were the most technical stuff . got moonbabies and had my jaw on the floor . for me this is the most technical band in the world and it happens that they create memorable melodies and grooves as well .
@@hafideloufir6392 Have you listened to the Aristocrats? They push this very very close. Govan Guthrie and Marco Minnemann are absolutely incredible musicians
In my opinion its best Planet X album , good balance beetwin melody and progresive complex madness !
The best contribution from Planet X. All three members firing on all cylinders, genius mixing and mastering and every track is a gem!
wasnt Simon Phillips the producer? agreed--the sound on this one is perfection!
I wore this album out at 18 years old and I still do! It’s an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end! As a musician it never fails to inspire me and as a listener it never fails to grab me and take me for a ride. Live From Oz is one of the best live recorded albums of all time and my personal choice for the best live recording. Brilliantly done!

Never heard of this group before. Stumbled upon this channel while searching for videos of the second Sun. What a great find! Truly out of this world music, just sit back, close your eyes, and open your mind to the vibes! 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ataraxia is an art monument, what a amazing and original track, blows my mind even after all these year..it is so advanced and fresh at the same time ,the entire album its pure genius stuff..donati parts are near to impossible some times.
the most sophisticated track i heard . what amazes me the most is jimmy johnson use of the low b in some parts . unreal
drums part in it is outstanding! its irregular, dont know how to say... very odd meter
@@hafideloufir6392 That end section to Ataraxia, when it shifts the tempo up a gear from the earlier repetition, has got to be one of the trickiest and most exciting passages in their work
Maybe a coincidence but this is to prog what Phill Collins Brand X was to jazz. Well they both borowed a similar concept name. Then we have Symphony X, all three great bands in there own way.
In "Midnigh Bell" The Drum bass played with one foot is absolutely mind blowing.
Virgil Donati is phenomenal.
What a journey
My brain is hurt, but, somehow, my soul heals it! Astonishing!
I have a weird subscription cryteria. Uploading this album and helping me listen to it after 10 years having forgotten it's name. LIFETIME subscribed. You can upload videos of you weeing in the toilet. I don't give a faak.
WTF!!!, amazing..., 20 years ago Derek and friends help my soul..., Thanks Oscar!!!
All the people in the comments are showing why physical media will always be superior to streaming.
What a atmosphere .. just wow
Part of my drumming education this. Wonderful.
Excellent reference Tim! For me one of the most creative drum compositions I've ever heard
@@oscarchuquillanqui8574 this and Quantum . quantum is the next level or final frontier of what can be humanly possible to do on a drum set
Produced by Simon Phillips. And you can tell. Everything falls into place perfectly.
This reminds me of Bill Bruford's 'One of A Kind' (1979) after about twenty years of steroids with a few trips tossed in for effect. Bruford's stuff was amazing live, wish I'd seen this wow The cover art is great also
the bible of the new era prog. the virgil donati era.
If the band members weren't mentioned in the description above, I would swear that Planet X were an '80s superband comprised of:
Vince Dicola - keyboard
Allan Holdsworth - guitar
Mark Edwards (on lots of caffeine) - drums
Bravo to Planet X for keeping the classic prog/fusion/metal sound alive.
The way tony plays that damn guitar is just!!! Legendary!!!!
I wish I could see them live....
you would have had a great seat...only 50 people showed up when i saw them opening and closing nights!
Matt Gartska sent me here. Of course I knew about Planet X thru (being a drummer of course I know Vigil )
This stuff is technical, but it's good because the stuff actually kind of grows on you and it has a certain vibe/mood to it.
Amazing
Amazing!
What a band. Amazing
fantastic album
thank you again Oscar
A Total Masterpiece! I can't believe!!!
Progressive!
This is an awesome discovery, and good to listen to after a Yes album. Tony MacAlpine is so good it's almost frightening. Maybe they all are, but I can recognize it in him.
Meu álbum preferido do Planet X
I remember buying all Planet X CDs back in the day when record stores were still around... A good investment.
I had to wait 2, maybe 3 months for each record to arrive here... Good times!
Jazz metal,real!
What can I say.. This music is so incredibly good! Just amazing! Love it! 😍
It is a pity that the project did not continue, I think we really need it now.
The best thing is that all this musicians are alive and kick ass nowadays in any kind music project I wish I could meet Virgil one day in Europe and all the other members of this unic super band
Gracias Óscar por subir éste disco, como sabrás, no figura en Spotify. Y como dices en un comentario, es un Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Saludos !

"Interlude in Milan" what a Treasure !!!!!!

...and the most of the recorded stuff from Derek, Virgil, Tony MacAlpne, Tony Franklin and of course everything (!) of ALLAN HOLDSWORTH 's work.
I LOVE YOU !
¡¡HERMOSO ARTE!!
Hola Oscar. Gracias por subir el disco! Suenan zarpado. Que bueno estaría que se vuelvan a juntar esos 3 monstruos!
thx
Such a U.K. Vibe about this. If you like this, check out the U.K. tracks on here to get a feel where some of this has come from. Bruford , Johnson and Whetton had invented some of this stuff.
I don't agree. Are you not confusing Jobson with the Johnson you mentioned? I'm not a UK fan myself but as far as I know John Wetton and UK became very differently oriented musical sources, with a commercial taste more than any other, in my opinion. Had Wetton left instead of Bruford, there could be a way to find an influence on this. That would be hypothetically a fit for UK as you propossed, a bit stretched I'd say.
Peter Garner, I think I know what made you say that UK 'invented' some of this, you must be thinking of some of the Ignotus per Ignotium track, which isn't too hard to get an idea of what that title means. No offense.
the style is very similar. it is amazing to hear allan holdsworth's guitar solos with a tony mcalpine playing style. I'm sure U.K is one of the main influences on planet x, and I don't know why it's never been mentioned.
One of my favourite records....
This album and OTV's "Serious young insects" is the pinnacle of music creation..can't get it enough..thank you for uploading it!
Lovely album! one of my favorites. I think the star of the show here is Virgil Donati. His drum parts are so unusual , he's using odd meters or strange time signatures all the time.
So glad I have the CDs of this and Universe. Amazing albums!
@@MrThomas1958 I have this too! I just forgot about it when all these feelings of nostalgia flooded my brain
This album is just incredible. Such nostalgia listening to this again. Really a shame they haven't posted this to spotify. 👎👎Do you know if a vinyl can be purchased?
No my friend, I dont have any direct contact with them, I'm just an art appreciator like you
Esse álbum é incrível. Pena não ter em nenhuma plataforma.
I so love this off the wall progression. Saw Derek live . Freakin awesome.
A shame this isn't on Spotify or other streaming services. Heard this for the first time 20 years ago, and now most people will never hear or find this album.
Ahead of their time that's for sure. Still the world isn't ready for fusion music of this kind as it challenges the listener too much still with its rythmic compositions. Harmonic it is digestible but rhythmically it is sophisticated to the point of the listener needing basic rhythmic knowledge to be able to enjoy the concepts employed by the musicians in the parts they play. I don't say this with a sense of "superiority" but like bebop jazz before it this is better enjoyed by listeners with a preference and expectation rather than a listener with a certain: entertain me attitude. The active listener more likely to enjoy this, the passive listener not at all. case in point, play this to your casual music listening friends. Illicit a reaction that is explained. Satisfied with the answer? You won't be, but you on the other hand will explain exactly what you like or dislike about their music. They won't do the same for yours though... Am I mistaken though?
As a fusion musician this was way ahead of what I could play at the time. My ears developed quicker than my playing though and I can imagine this is also accessible to non musicians who just listen to a lot of music.
Hello from Matt Garstka
Simon Phillips is not just a perfect drummer, he also is a perfect producer❤
who else think ignotus per ignotum is the best planet x song
There’s too many especially on this album to have a favorite. I prefer the live version as the guitar solo is just gorgeous and the energy in the room is like 😮
Great album, great collaboration. I was studying in college when this came out, loved it. Still do.
The first minute or so of Micronesia is exactly what it feels like when you're getting into the zone. First you're just enjoying the initial feeling of noticing that everything is seemingly happening automatically. Then you start to enjoy the rhythmic nature of it. Eventually, you start to get silly just because you know you can, for as long as it may last.
I feel alive and fresh
I believe "Micronesia" was called "Boy with a flute" before getting its definitive title.
The title track is fucking insane
Just a step aside from J.S.B.'s Tocatta & Fugue. But it's just an oppinion.
Abstract expressionism made music. Perfect rythms, perfect match, even perfect integration of harmonies and disrupt. Absolutely breathtaking.
The first track gives me Lydian mode vibes
Planet x was mentioned in an interview I read of an artist I wasn't familiar with. I had never heard of them before but they were mentioned alongside some big names in fusion so I was curious to check them out. Definitely harder and more metal than I expected but I really dig it.
Incredible amazing musicians they really pushed the Boundaries when I came to advanced polymeric musical playing . Even in today's standards this music hold up .We can learn so much in understanding this type of Music. That can help really stretch us to be better Musicians.
👌

I would call the first tune "Singularity:Through The Wormhole"
Hearing this for the first time right now. The WOW factor is 5/5!!! I'm going to have to look up Simon Phillips' production credits list.

Not that anyone cares really but I created that cover art. Simple I know but I’m still proud of it. Horrible UA-cam copy of it though.
I know the drummer Virgil and he got me the gig.
Iconic album art! That image is in my brain and always will be, thank you!
it's no court of the crimson king in terms of recognizable, but i see the theme you went with and for how simple it is, it gives you a perfect idea of what to expect in terms of music, Crimson King just tells you "don't do acid and stare at me."
Litterally dripping '90s juice. Love it!
