Love this series! A forgotten but very important part of our history. All my family roots come from these parts, from Welch WV to Roanoke, VA to Franklin County VA down to Knoxville TN. These videos really hit home with me, so thank you for sharing.
My grandfather grew up down rd from her and was friends with her, they played music together for fun. My grandfather ended up moving to NY and she came up and visited sometime between 1986 and 1989, my mom has a picture of her holding me when I was a baby at my grandparents house in the back yard. ❤
I cannot understand how living in the big city is better than the country. I am one of those who would live in the holler before I lived in the city. If I won the biggest lottery ever I would still live in the country. Just a bigger house and large stocked pond to fish.
My husband and I went to Butcher Hollar last year just a couple weeks or so after Loretta Lynn passed. No one will ever replace Loretta as the queen of country music. RIP Loretta
Loretta and Dolly epitomized country music that seemed to flow effortlessly from deep within, relating their true life experiences as mountain women to an appreciative world.
I wasn’t much better off in Van Lear ( Butchers Holler) the drugs, drinking and shiftless living was depressing. Going to Webbs store to buy a van of chew and having it rung up as bologna so we could use our food stamps to pay. Getting paid in food stamps to go over the hill and get a 30 pack of beer ( Johnson county was dry…it changed just about the time I left 20 yrs ago). Petty theft was rampant. It was not really joyful nostalgia. Mother Earth is a mean mother and she raises mean children.
I have lived in Kentucky all my life. I remember when comanagers daughter came out. I never heard of that town but I never made it to there to see where Larreta grew up now I live in Florida, but one day it is on my bucket list before I die, I would like to see where Loretta grew up and visit her home in Tennessee but I started thinking even though her husband took her away from Kentucky to start over in Tennessee or whatever the case might be all those lands there throughout Kentucky he could’ve gotten her ranch there he really didn’t need to take her so far away. I think her family should make another movie of Loretta throughout her life from the beginning to the end I will definitely watch it. It’s just a thought, but it would be nice if they could make another movie.
Loretta's homeplace looks great! For probably being really dated, IMO, it looks fantastic. I'm sure when she was alive Loretta made sure her home stayed nice. RIP Loretta. To me, you will always be the undisputed Queen Of Country Music.
I don't have a TV or cell phone and I don't get much news. I did not know Miss Loretta had passed. Thank you so much for a trip up the Holler to remember her.
This is a great video. After watching Coal Miners daughter I was wondering what Butcher Holler looked like today. I live in Western PA but my maternal ancestry is from WV. Country life is beautiful.
I appreciate very much this visit to the home place of Loretta Lynn. For some reason I was struck by the latter part of the video where what I will call "textured" shots of the structure and the music are presented without narration. There's something emotionally moving to that idea, at least for me - like a respectful "moment of silence", when words aren't needed. :)
I got to go in the store her family owns and also her homeplace, got to go inside and met her brother herman, 2nd time we went her family done the tours of the house, ots an amazing place to go see reminds me of how I was raised
I grew up with Loretta and Patsy Cline matter of fact I still play their CDs although I also have their records and my grandbabies just laughed at those records. To me those were the happiest times. Both ladies sing about life and it made women not feel so lonely or that they're the only ones in a situation. They gave us hope that everybody goes through certain hardness in life but we always make it through. Then we look back on these memories with fondness and gross. I would like to thank God for both these ladies. I know they're in heaven at the moment singing for God. So thank you for walking this down this road of memories God bless
Your videos always bring an element of respect and understanding to what its like to grow up in this part of the country. Most of the city folk wouldn't survive a week if they had to live the lives of these people.❤ Can't wait for your next video!
Loretta Lynn's mama married Tommy Butcher her first cousin from Wabash, Indiana in the latter 1950's a couple years after her hubby Melvin , "Ted " passed away..her mama Claire was a very humble and sweet lady, plain and simple southern rooted, and tops in hospitality very meek and caring, loving personal shyed away in the limelight of all the things going on in her life and popularity, fame of her daughters back than at the time ..R.I.P. Loretta Webb Lynn " & R.I.P. Claire Webb Butcher " /her mama 🙏 🤲
I loved Loretta Lynn's singin' and all of her songs 🎵 I knew her mama Clara Webb Butcher..Loretta's mama took care of my grandpa when he got sick ..when Clara and her hubby & her children except for Loretta moved from their Butch Hollow, Kentucky home in the latter part of the 1950's, to the town here of Wabash, Indiana just down the road from my hometown of North Manchester, Indiana..Loretta Lynn's mama would always fix me and my older sister fruit juices of grapefruit, apple and pineapple juice Loretta had just gotten started in her singin' career during those years early to mid 1960's and her one daughter Brenda Webb that I knew her by before she became known as Chrystal Gale her stage name she was like only 2 or 3 yrs or so older than me back than I was 8- 11
I grew up listening to Loretta she was a genuine person with the voice of an angel she will never be forgotten as a coal miner's grandson in whitley County Kentucky I for one enjoy this channel I just stumbled across it a few days ago keep bringing this kind of format I'm enjoying the history of my region
It was so lovely to show the house of Loretta home, was ashame you never showed us inside as i live in Australia... i hope to get to Butcher Hollow to see the home
Loretta is of my parent's generation. My mom grew up coal camp to coal camp in southern WV with a violent, alcoholic father and not enough clothes or food to survive had it not been for her uncle. My dad raised us in a rough lumber sall mill shack very similar to this one, that he worked on for years. We started out with no running water. He finally began to work regularly in the mines when I was 10. But we had cattle, chickens, hogs, and multiple big gardens. We butchered a steer and hog and sold the others. Always a cellar full of canned goodness for winter. My dad sold eggs, milk, buttermilk, and butter to his buddies at the mines. All right here in a holler outside Welch WV. My childhood was wonderful and I wouldn't trade it for anybody's! Thanks for helping me reminisce. Love your channel.
I too am from Johnson county Kentucky and really enjoyed your video. We used to ride horses all over Butcher holler back in the 70's ! I only get to go home twice a year, Easter and Thanksgiving and the occasional funeral, my Grandparents have gone to be with the Lord, as well as 2 aunts and in December of 2020 my uncle became another coal mining statistic ! As I lose more kin, it feels more and more lonely !! I try not to watch videos of Eastern Kentucky because it makes me so homesick that I just end up bawling, anyway thank you for the wonderful memories of home !
Humbled by your sharing such dear special memories. We're actually doing some trail riding today on horseback ourselves. Take care, & thanks for watching!!
Yeah, I’ve been watching your videos for about a week now and now I’ve been catching up on all of them. It’s actually very interesting I live in North Carolina I’m originally from the mountains of North Carolina, but I live in a small town away from the mountains though now living in the south, and always have been stereotyped towards people, they always let you down upon country people, but you know what I don’t care very comfortable with who I am I’m proud of my roots
Loretta Lynn was my favorite singer since i was a little girl. I have a album she personnally signed. That concert she only signed 2autographs ,mine was the first.
Thanks for the video. I hope to take this trip one day. If I never get the chance to experience it in real life, at least I've seen it in your video. Thank you.
I was here 8 years ago - her brother Herman showed us around. It was a thrill to make the journey there and see it in real time. You made some great drone shots of the property - was a great way to see a new view. Thanks for sharing
I enjoyed this series. The appalachias are beautiful. I love the beauty of the fall leaves. Thanks again for sharing about an amazing woman who lived through many struggles to get to where she was. Years ago we actually went to church with some people with the last name Butcher and was from Butcher Holler. It may have been some connection there. Keep sharing.
Listen I’m a city guy , from Fort myers Florida , I live in Kentucky now I been here for 12 years and I just recently became interested in Loretta Lynn life , saw the movie, Heard her music , end of July I’ll be visiting this amazing site and this brings tear to my eyes how this was once lively. History was made at that place . This video is very helpful, love the music too . Keep up the good work . New subscriber here !!!
I am from Ireland. I am really enjoying this series of video's. It's great and really sparks an interest in me to explore Appalachia some day in the future.
A little house in the holler is preferred by many ppl, myself included. Living in a full blown city would be a nightmare for me! Really enjoyed this. Thank you
Thanks for taking us to Butcher Holler. This video was great. I think she was a genuine person. I remember one interview she gave, she said “I still eat fried bologna sandwiches.” Maybe it was just a quip - a nod to the movie, but I think she was being honest and unpretentious.
I loved Loretta's music, grew up listening to it. A very talented family with roots that grow deep in the hearts of many throughout the world. R. I. P. Loretta❤️🙏
Another outstanding glimpse into a holler. This episode brought memories of Shaby Run. A holler near Roderfield Wv, the place I used to deliver the Welch Daily News to 31 customers..it was my first real job, and through the eyes of a fifth grader I began to see the real world..I’ll never forget that know matter how tight the money was, not one time did a customer fail to pay me when I collected the monthly fee for the paper..
Mountain Root videos are very well done bringing out the essence of Appalachia America and its caretakers. Hats off to these Folks that make the most out of life enjoying their Families and Friends. Your optics and content are always of good character as well as wisdom, Life may look slow up here in the hills but from experience i know its hard it will test everything you are made of. Thank you for sharing your life experiences with us. God Bless you Sir
Hey buddy I love your video! I have family down in Louisa Kentucky and Grayson Kentucky. I go down there to visit and off-road often. I’ve also been to Loretta Lynn’s childhood home and the store. Great video thank you.
Josh, Great job. Thank you!!!!! I thought of you yesterday when I was visiting Lewisburg, West Va. I always go to Lewisburg when I'm visiting the Greenbrier Resort.
I grew up similar to this and appreciate my roots that shaped me into what I am today and I live very content and so appreciate what I have inside and out. Thank you for sharing this awesome video. I just can't say more.
Just came across your channel. Nicely narrated and very professional. My mother in her younger years looked just like Loretta Lynn. People at the grocery store would always tell her that.

I was born a coal miners grandson. And there is nothing to unpack in that statement, I would take that cabin in eastern Kentucky over 10 NY penthouses..
Met Herman years ago at Webb's Store when he was trying to hammer the centerlink of his square body Chevy straight after putting it in a ditch. Mr Eustace took us on a tour. Just past the store, before entering the holler, there's a hard left turn with a buncha dogs chained up to warn the locals of strangers coming down the road.

Thanks so much for this. This was my first venture into Loretta Lynn and was perfect introduction. Your camera work is great. Loretta Lynn, other women of country music fame, its unbelievable that they had children, careers, boundless spirit and energy. And boy is her voice an angel's.
The family offers paid tours of the house, so that's why I didn't take a camera inside out of respect for that. If you're ever in the area though, I highly suggest you take the tour!
Thanks for watching this tribute to Loretta Lynn. What's one of your favorite songs she wrote/sang?
Coal miner's daughter and the pill
The phone song with Conway twitty and you woman enough to take my nan

I liked Coal Miner's Daughter
Coal Miner's Daughter was my favorite song
She is still alive and singing her heart out

Life's pretty good in the holler!
Everyone has different tastes and preferences. I prefer the country too but some love the hustle and bustle of the city.
RIP Loretta!Your earthly journey has ended, now for the next chapter.
My husband and I went to Butcher Hollar last year just a couple weeks or so after Loretta Lynn passed. No one will ever replace Loretta as the queen of country music. RIP Loretta
*Holler
Are people still living in the mountains?
What a beautiful home to have grown up and inspired such wonderful songs from such a beautiful woman. Thank you for uplaoding !
Loretta lynn your will be loved, and missed.
A wonderful talent! The drive from her school to home seemed very long. If they walked, they did so in rain & snow.
Times may have been hard then but it didn't bother you like hard times today back then people helped each other
Loretta and Dolly epitomized country music that seemed to flow effortlessly from deep within, relating their true life experiences as mountain women to an appreciative world.
Absolutely, they literally wrote and sang songs about their real life experiences growing up in Appalachia!
These old towns must be preserved for future generations to see how they lived in their days u know to keep that old American way of life alive
Only some can understand the beauty of country life as opposed to city life
Definitely, I lived in Florida my whole life and I’m slowly loving the country beauty! I been sleeping on sites like these
Not some. MANY
Thanks!
Really appreciate your support!!
Her house looks so peaceful………
I got a good vibe while there!
There's still people who live like this

I bet her home was c-o-l-d in the winter. Thank you, Lord, for Loretta Lynn, and giving her the gift of her music.
Loretta said in her autobiography that her mother always kept the house warm and clean.
Love her music. A real national treasure!
