  • M'sieur Le Squidge is a 12 day old orphan Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found on his electrocuted mum under powerlines outside a primary school.
He was yelling his little lungs out and trying to make sense of his world where his mother no longer responded and there was no milk in her nipples.
I brought him home, knowing his initial bravado was all adrenaline, and sure enough, within a few hours he was a sore and sorry little guy with a burnt mouth and miserable eyes.
He spent the next few days being really squidgy (which is my technical term for pups who are very unwell). His eyes were squinty and scrunched up, and he was hunched and miserable. He got regular analgesia for the first few days and it took him quite a while to become hydrated and he needed subcutaneous fluids for 5 days to supplement what he could drink. His mastery of feeding from the teat was poor because of his sore mouth, so he kept snorting the milk out his nose no matter how I fed him - with a syringe, or dripping one drop at a time down the side of his dummy.
After a course of antibiotics to combat his chest infection, he started to improve and decided he was going to live.
Follow his story through the next few videos.
