NYC's Most Confusing Bridge? : Walking the Washington Bridge from the Bronx to Manhattan

- Many people don't know there's a Washington Bridge, because it is overshadowed by a more famous bridge with a similar name, the George Washington Bridge. In this video, I walk from the neighborhood of Morris Heights, Bronx to Washington Heights, Manhattan via this confusing anomaly.

"The Washington Bridge is a 2,375-foot (724 m)-long arch bridge over the Harlem River in New York City between the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. The span, opened in 1888, connects 181st Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights, Manhattan, with University Avenue in Morris Heights, Bronx. It carries six lanes of traffic, as well as sidewalks on both sides. Ramps at either end of the bridge connect to the Trans-Manhattan Expressway and the Cross-Bronx Expressway.
The bridge is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Transportation. It once carried U.S. Route 1, which now travels over the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. "

I walked this bridge in 2016 blizzard to get home to my daughter and mom. Craziest experience ever. So happy I moved out the neighborhood.

It’s old.... 1800s, I believe... there was reconstruction in 1988 I think

Some side notes from an all-time Heights resident:
- The south walkway is a bit wider and gives you better views of the Hamilton & High Bridges. And the High Bridge itself will give you the best full views of the Washington Bridge (postcard pictures on a clear day).
- The city has found it so hard to fully repair the bridge because of 1) lack of Federal funds, and 2) it's a release valve for the GWB traffic in case there is ever an accident on the Hamilton. There was a massive makeover in the early 90s, but the increasing traffic has worn that down.
- The fencing on the sides were put there due to the increasing amount on construction debris being blown off the bridge by high winds and traffic, and also debris being thrown of the bridge by idiots.
- And contrary to urban myths, the bridge is not collapsing. The roadway needs repair but the framework and foundations were replaced in the 90s.
Man, that walkway is a little claustrophobic!

I miss the bronx but I don't miss it ya know. The culture was great growing up. But my son had a really hard time in school. My son now loves school since we moved he is no longer below average in reading,no summer school programs. He looks happier.
Before covid he had no homework.

This bridge is actually The 'Martha Washington' Bridge. For some reason, they shortened the name.
Martha Washington was the nickname given to the lower deck of the George Washington Bridge.
@@jarvijumper9220 That may be true, but I walked this bridge many times. I remember the 'sign' (Martha Washington Bridge ) in the 70s and early 80s, before they took it down.
Oh wow... That would make so much sense being that both bridge are adjacent to one another. Walking over this bridge though seems so stressful with all the garbage it having such a narrow "PEDESTRIAN" (as in walking) path. The shopping cart I can understand but the bicycles especially the motored one, Really? It makes no sense...
That sign that says Detour near the playground is where an MTA bus drove over the side of the bridge onto the highway below last week

I lived in Highbridge in the 70’s. My mother used to walk me while pushing my baby brother in a stroller across the Washington bridge into Washington Heights to go shopping. There was no chain link fence then.

Funny.. I cross that bridge several times a week for over 12 years for work.... I always thought it was called the 181st bridge??!!
I knew it was the Washington Bridge but when I used to live near it in the Bx everyone called it the 181st Bridge. It empties on the west end into 181st St in Manhattan.

I drive across this bridge fairly often and never knew it was the Washington Bridge. Everyone I know calls it the University bridge due to the neighborhood on the Bronx side of the bridge.

Grew up in this area,from the 60's to the 90's what changes. Wow.
I live near this Washington Bridge I used to walk across it , it's too dangerous I won't do it anymore, year's ago there was construction done on it and the walkway was extremely narrowed, now with the various types of bikes it's a risk for foot traffic.
As you can see the city does not maintain the Washington Bridge, it's a miracle that it has not crumbled down. Those orange barriers in the middle of the road have been there for about 2 years without any work being done on the bridge

Sedgwick playground has history to it. The was the park where hip hop started flourishing. The building 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is where hip hop started! If I remember correctly, Grandmaster flash use to play his beats in that park.

No, the building is 1520 Sedgwick Ave. That was Kool Herc's building. God father of Hip Hop. Grand Master Flash, played in Ceder Park after Herc. That park is on Sedgwick Avenue too.

We lived in Highbridge and walked across that bridge in the fifties and sixties to the Heights to shop or visit my grandmother.

You can use this bridge to avoid traffic on the Cross Bronx and a short cut to the GWB. Also, coming off the GWB and back into NY you can use it to bypass the I-95 & I-87 interchange, which is always a cluster.

Walked this bridge before and I have to tell you it’s pretty interesting to say the least. I was born and raised in Washington Heights pretty much in the area when you cross the bridge into Manhattan but I’m closer to the George Washington Bridge than I am the Washington bridge

During summers as kids, we'd walk along streets like Washington bridge..and all that exhaust would form a dirty film when mixed w/ our sweaty faces
There is a walkway on the other side as well. That's the side that had the bus accident last week.

Facts
In the mid and late 80's I used to run on this bridge. It wasn't that bad then. Good view of the river then. I walked it about a year ago and I was shocked. The fence really narrows the walk way and ruins the view. The park on the Washington Heights side is ruined too.
That bridge was so narrow. Maybe they made the walking part narrow because they really didn't want people to walk across it. A request: is it possible for you to show the street signs when you come to them or a corner. I used to live there & every time you come to a corner with the name of the street I'm always trying to see what the sign reads. And for some reason, you always are moving the camera from the sign. I sometimes do get a glimpse though. Thanks for all the walking you do around the city, it brings back fond memories. It makes me want to move back there.
The bridge commemorative plaque on the bridge is the most interesting aspect of this whole walk. I wish you would have read it. Very historic signage totally neglected and of course graffiti.
I wanted to pause there longer but since the walkway was so narrow, it made it really inconvenient to do so!

I remember walking that since I had an interview for a job and I had a great walk. There was traffic (as always) so the cars weren’t speeding
Featherbed Lane. The 90s here was so dope. I really miss it. My uncle had an autoshop next to where that pioneer supermarket is now. And now I feel old.
So when this bridge was built it was mostly horse and buggy with mabey some of the earliest made automobiles but I’m assuming probably not very many
Coming from the west, we call that bridge the 181st bridge because the entrance to it is on 181st in the Washington Heights area. I never knew the actual name was Washington Bridge. By the way, there is a Fort Washington Avenue that runs vertical on Washington Heights.

As a native New Yorker who used to live in Inwood, I never heard of this bridge till now! Great video and very informative. I do agree that it's a very crappy bridge for both motorists and pedestrians...blah!

Thing of it is, if they totally repaved the bridge and cleaned and beautified all of its structures, and took down the fence (that makes it feel like a prison cage; maybe suicide netting below, instead?) it could actually be a decently attractive bridge, for its age and type.
It would be very dangerous if the fencing wasn't there,in the late Spring boats like The Circle Line pass under it, that would lead to a tragedy.

Very good video walk from Bronx to Manhattan. Reminds me of the videos I have been viewing on Lagos, Nigeria and other cities around the world. Once you get out of the tourist areas most medium and poor communities look the same. Makes me wonder why people are rushing to get here from there. As an urban design student I spent a lot of years walking around cities but did not have the benefit of video cameras.
Peace! I have been walking across this bridge since my first time August 1975 at age 8 to this present date, and I always knew it to simply be The 181st. Street bridge
Check out Ernest Lawson's paintings of the bridge. You can find them online, and there is at least one at the Met Museum. It used to be a scenic place and the bridge was pretty, believe it or not! :) Great video - thanks.

5 actually. The Bx3, Bx11, Bx13, Bx35 and Bx36/Bx36 Limited. In addition, all of them run crosstown on 181st Street, too.

I first heard about the Washington Bridge when I went on the Circle Line Cruise around Manhattan in 2017 and the tour guide said exactly what you said, "not the George Washington Bridge but the Washington Bridge" he said when we came up to it. It was a lovely cruise. You walking the bridge reminds me of the traverse walks in Central Park (only less space to walk here). Another great video. 😊

The sign said detour because there was a accident where a bus drove off the bridge onto the Cross Bronx Expressway a few weeks ago. thats why there was jersey barriers instead of normal green steel barriers

This Bridge really needs a makeover or close it down because it's too narrow for the pedestrians to walk on or bicyclist to ride on what they should have done back in 1888 was made it more wider so it can be easier to walk on and also it's time for an inspection on the roadways too the whole Bridge for the pedestrians safety.
