- This 1946 Scott Flying Squirrel motorcycle is a fascinating and probably unique piece of automotive history as it presents itself still in its original paint and livery, original to the „last screw“ so to speak. The current owner decided to remove the passenger seat, the footrests and lowered the motorcycle seat to give the Scott Flying Squirrel a sportier appearance. The 596cc dual stroke twin engine interacts with a three-speed gearbox is rated at 25 kW (ca. 34 hp) and has enough punch to push the motorcycle way above 100 km/h.
Manufactured by the British Scott Motorcycles Ltd, and first launched in 1926, the Scott Flying Squirrel was known for an innovative design paired with engineering prowess, but also for its priciness. The motorcycle for instance featured a unique water-cooled circulation based on convenction, dubbed the „thermosyphon system“ as well as a centrally positioned flywheel. Production of civil versions of the Scott Flying Squirrel stopped in 1940 and resumed for a short period of time again in 1946. For these early post-war models, the Webb girder forks were replaced by Dowty air sprung telescopic forks.
Nice to see! My father owned a 1949 Scott in the mid 1950s. I think he even passed his motorcycle test on it in the U.K.!
I owned a 1948 Scott Squirrel that was very similar to this beauty - except mine had the Dowty Airdraulic forks. A sweet handling machine due to a low C of G - and the triangulated frame. I must admit that i was never entirely happy with my set-up of the Pilgrim total loss oil pump.. Despite my best efforts, the engine nipped up on me a couple of times with a yowp from the back tyre. I always rode ready to whip that clutch in.. Its number plate was JOH 47... Thanks for posting.
Thank you for your sharing! 😊
That's a real yowler, and a smokey bugger. Looks very original. Lovely going down the road. Thanks for posting. The Brough Superior of two strokes. Except they were made for more than fifty years. Some estimates are as high as 80,000 units manufactured. Not many in Canada. Saw one for sale on kijiji 7 years ago. Gone in flash
Nowhere near 80,000 made. Only 3,000 were made between 1930 and 1950 when the company closed. Only about 300 in the last year when this machine was made.
I think you'll find that they started manufacturing in 1910. Scott left the company in1923 to concentrate on cars, but the firm carried on in Shipley until 1950 around which time they moved to Birmingham where they continued until almost 1967. My numbers are a fantasy really, but I have seen a 66 Birmingham Scott for sale in the US@@fanbatcher and models as old as 1910.
Is it beyond possiblity to adjust carb etc so that it idles? ????
I wonder if this Czechoslovakian gentleman owns any Jawas?
Schöner Film! Und viele schöne Kilometer damit auf der Straße! Hier eine andere fahrende Flying Squirrel (1928) zur "Replica" umgebaut:ua-cam.com/video/IqeE5x8w8gk/v-deo.html
