Buying an Electric Tricycle - 3 Things I Wish I Had Known Before Purchasing

- Choosing the right Electric Tricycle can be a difficult decision. How much power do I need, how big of a battery, will I be able to turn ok, can it get me up hills. In this video, I describe the three things I've learned since owning an electric trike and what I'd wish I'd known before purchasing. All electric trikes are not created equal and there are different features that I didn't even know about. Four of the most important features that can vary from trike to trike are the motor, battery, tires and overall design. But there are really three things I wish I had known before buying an electric trike.
Number one, electric trikes ride differently than a two wheel bicycle. Now this seems obvious but we've done hundreds of test rides at sixthreezero with riders of various ages and it's always an adjustment when people get on an electric tricycle for the first time. The way an e trike steers is just so much different from a two wheel bike. A two wheel bicycle you lean your body to direct the bike in the direction you want it to go. An electric tricycle doesn't work that way, you must steer the handlebars to go in the direct you want to go. We've witnessed many riders who start to lean on a trike thinking it will steer them the way they want to go but then realize the electric tricycle isn't going in the direction they want it to. That's because you have to steer. It may take some getting used when you get on an e trike for the first time but after a few rides you'll have the hang of it.
Second thing I wish I knew was not all electric tricycles are created equal. There are different motor sizes, battery sizes, tire sizes, riding positions and cargo baskets. It's important to try and match up your desired riding with the specs you choose. Also it's important to realize that the specs you choose will dictate the price of your electric tricycle. A larger battery will last longer on rides, but will also cost more money. If you plan to only take your tricycle for short rides consider buying a smaller battery to save yourself cost. Bigger motors can be good for heavier riders and also climbing hills but they will have more thrust. Consider a smaller motor if you just want to cruise and just simple want a little assistance when pedaling. The tires can come in various sizes, fat tires provide a cushy ride and thinner tires will roll smoother. Remember riding position is important too, you want to be comfortable while riding.
Lastly, electric trikes are fun! Even if you still can ride a two wheel bike, three wheel bikes provide a whole different adventure! They can be ridden to the beach or around town and are enjoyable for the whole family. Use the baskets to bring all of your belongings and enjoy your day wherever you are off to!

I never was able to learn a bike because I have balance problems. I have Autism and can't drive a car and this seems like a great option
Exact same reason I've been looking.
I don’t have any balance , so my husband bought me adult stabilisers, so you have one wheel in the front and one at the back with two smaller wheels not kids ones lol they are bigger and stronger. It looks like a trim down trike, mine folds love it .
I had my electric bike for a short time. I learned how important leaning into a turn is because I tipped over and skinned a knee pretty bad. I'm elderly but when I was young I road a 10 speed until I was a young adult. I will visit your sit to look over bikes I was thinking about getting a lighter weight one for my wife.
How can I get one my trike was stolen got it back and no one will touch it to fix it it's a regular 7 speed trike so saw this , and Wonder the cost since I have disabilitys, I am 67 and need a way to go to stores and parks.
I had a motorbike and sidecar back in the 1950s yes sure is different. you soon learn.
My Dad had a motorbike, with a sidecar, I think it was the late 60's early 70"s, he used to ride us around the neighborhood, it was yellow. If I lived in a more motorbike friendly arera, I would get one and ride, my Grandkids and dogs around. Thank you for bring up a precious memory.
Hello!
Thank you very much!
Nice to know thanks.👍
Thank you, had worry about which side to shift the weight when turning, thanks for your advice….Cheers!
I don’t doubt my ability to adjust to the difference of riding a trike, but I do wonder about the roads where I live. I live in a historic district where the roads aren't very wide in general, and some, maybe half, of them have at least a few cars parked on one side of the street, and some on both sides, at which time one driver will wait behind a parked car for another to to get by. Cars don't pass one another on the streets since it's one lane with two way traffic. The traffic isn't fast, or even really busy, usually not a problem in a car, but on the video the trikes look pretty wide and it seems like cars would get stuck going slow behind a trike until they could get around it when no cars were coming from the opposite direction. So, my question is: Are the trikes as wide as they look to me?
it would be great for quick trips to the store
I love trikes I just sold mine it had no gears I need gears and electric disabled in my back
They should make trikes that can have 3 batteries mounted on the trike as you peddle the battery will recharge itself. And where can I get these e-trikes ?
Are Valk Electric Tricycles good? I can get one for $900.
That was very helpful thanks. How would you put one on the back of your motorhome? Any ideas?
A hitch rack, there are good ones that Thule makes.
How about going uphill? How about tipping around a corner? Do you have backs on any of your seats? HEaring about fires with electric bikes, how's your batteries?
We have some additional videos on our channel showing uphill and how to steer, around corners etc. Our bikes don't come with backs on the seats. We have not had issues with fires with our batteries.
Can you put mirrors on both sides plus a different seat high back seat I want one of them but how fast does it go some go 15 miles
Yeah of course you could add those!
I live in upstate NY where we have long snowy winters. Are there any trikes made to ride through snow and ice? How about rain?
I don't know of any that are made for that, but there are chains you can put on your bike tires, just like cars, www.biketiresdirect.com/reviews/slipnot-26-inch-bicycle-traction-chains
We are in NZ ,cost is like $5000
I bought a 17.5 inch mountain trike from Docred Sports. It is not electric.. Finally got it assembled but I am having a very hard time riding it. When I try to take off I go straight but then it turns. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what. Any tips??
It takes awhile to get used to the steering of a tricycle. Just remember you have to keep the handlebars straight on a trike. You'll get it with practice!
Hi. QUESTION: What do you mean that three wheel bikes ride differently? Wish you had explained more. Thanks.
Tricycles/3 Wheel Bikes have a different feel from two wheel bikes. On a two wheel bike you have to lean and use your body weight to balance and turn the bike. On a 3 wheel bike, you don't need to because the bike balances itself. When you are rolling, they feel the same, but when turning and maneuvering they feel different. Check out our channel, we have several videos about riding a tricycle.
Weare haw I can bay a tricicle in toronto
So why aren't trikes being made more along the lines of old school tricycles. They'd be so much more stable, and with the motorized front wheel, so much more fun.
What was the design of old school tricycles?
I wish I had seen this before I purchased a Viribus! Mine came with the mounting for the front disc brakes welded on in the wrong spot, what does that do, the brakes are faulty. I have spoken with their bike mechanic via phone ( and he was a lovely person) but the "fix" he gave us just did not fix the issue. What is Viribus solution? They offered me $50.00 this is a $1,000.00 bike that in my my opinion is dangerous, the brakes does not work well and it pulls to the right. I have decided that I will force the to give me a full refund, they offered my $200.00 and I keep the bike. What part of this bike is dangerous do you not understand? So maybe you will be seeing me here on youtube, with my review of the Viribus electric trike..............
What’s the price, how expensive
