What I like the most about this movie is it's simplicity. It is a charming little adventure. Nothing more , nothing less and I think sometimes that is more than enough... a lovely video as always mate 😄😄. You said this was your first Ghibli movie.? Awesome. Mine was princess Mononoke. Paprika is next? Cool ...get ready for a trip
Not really. It has a weak art style, especially for ghibli, doesn't capture the same wonder that its predecessor showed off even once and had the weakest high point and outcome of arguably any ghibli movie. It was neither well thought out nor put together and the connections to whisper are honestly far too weak. What hurts it the most are the plain characters though, they completely lack the nuances and soul of good Ghibli movies.
@@Mat-hr1dg when i first watch it like 15 year ago, i was dissapointed because i keep compared it with mononoke, spirited away, nausicaa, omoide poporo etc. but i rewatch it recently and i find it really enjoyable. it doesn"t pretend to be as serious as other ghibli movie, it's just a fun short movie to watch.
The main thing about this movie that sticks out in my mind is how ungraceful Haru is. Seriously, Haru is probably the least poised Ghibli protag and it is amazing.
@@Stevem Yeah, the truck should have hit her. Baron and Muta helping her after the injury as the envoys of The Cat Kingdom might have been a better story, I guess.
When I read that I thought you said "ungrateful" ? 😅 Then I was thinking, how is Haru ungrateful. She is propably thanking Baron in almost every sentence or was always concerned about the other characters.
I watched The cat returns before Whisper of the Heart and I didn’t love it. I thought it was just fine. I watched Whisper and it shook me to the core and I saw the connections and investigating further, I was delighted to learn that Cat was actually the novel Shizuku wrote. That gives Cat so much more value! To know that Shizuku was successful after all the learnings of Whisper is so heartwarming. Thank you so much for the video!! It’s always so good to know more about the artists behind these lovely works 🐈❤️
Rosie L I have a love for writing and stories that’s probably why whisper connected more with me. Either way the Baron is amazing and I like to him in both movies 🥰
I loved The Cat Returns so much as a kid because though most Ghibli movies were understandable enough, I couldn't really appreciate it the way I do now since the plots were more on Younh Adult. The Cat Returns and Ponyo were the perfect Ghibli movies for me as a kid to start to understand stories and their attention to detail. For Ponyo, it made me appreciate subs more, the Japanese version striking with me. In Cat Returns, I liked the dub more because of the dialogue. "What are all these chickens doing here? "I'll miss you fatso!!!" Plus, the humor was straight out, which I appreciated so much as I watched it on a bad day. In short, The Cat Returns is underratedly amazing with the simplicity and complexity of it complimenting each other.
Whisper of the Heart is such a powerful film that really follows such an inspiring story for a young girl learning her passion for life. The Cat Returns took that and mixed it wonderfully into a fantastical story that allows her to grow into herself. Muta and The Baron were such important characters to me.
I feel that its the ending to this movie really made me fall in love with it and see it as a worthy continuation of Whisper of the Heart. Seeing the change in character of Haru at the end really strikes an emotional cord with me and I find it really uplifting and satisfying especially when the main theme kicks in. I know its silly because the ending section in the real world is so short but it is just so impactful. When I look back on this movie, honestly the middle section in the cat world is fairly forgettable for me it is always that beginning in contrast to the ending which makes me obsessed and hold it up highly along with the other Ghibli movies.
The soundtrack is a hidden symphonic gem. There is a Mahler quote too. My eyes welled up when I heard those amazing melodies. Thanks for making this video.
This is one of the movie I remember watching multiple times when I was little! Love the scene when she is in the house and everything around her is small while sipping from the little tea cup 😆

The cat returns was my first Studio Ghibli film as well and it enchanted me, with it's characters music and story, though I knew something was a bit off, it had it's flaws (as you mentioned in the video). I cannot even fathom how lovely and charismatic this film is💜 this movie is in my top three films from Ghibli and I really don’t know how many times I have rewatched this beautiful film. The Cat Returns is underrated as hell and it really is a shame. But damn, that movie just got me sucked in with its adventure and great characters and its just pure bliss ✨

If I'm not mistaken, the color palate from the film reflects the range of colors that cats actually "see" in. Neat little addition to the film, that I hadn't noticed until you highlighted the palate!
Thank you so much for this, I love this movie with all of my heart and it’s my favorite from Ghibli so I often get sad when I see no one talking about it. But you did! Thank you :)

the most memorable thing about the cat's return is that song. Kaze ni Naru. It's so catchy in my ears I still remember some of the lyrics and just spontaneously humming it.

I like to think this is the film adaptation of the book Shizuku would eventually finish after writing the first draft in Whisper of The Heart. I also like to think the book was better. Not that this is a terrible film, but when you consider how hard Shizuku was working on it, it comes off a little simplistic.
God damnit!! I should've stayed inside to watch the movie years ago when I had the chance at someones baby shower 😭 But alas, I was a child who didn't know what Studio Ghibli even was.

I've probably watched this movie well over 100 times in my life. I watched it at least once a week all through elementary school. Seriously, this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
This movie has one of my favorite film scores ever and you did such a beautiful job explaining how well the music brings out each scene and completes the magical feeling of the world being drawn. I also never realized how limited yet intentional the color palette was. So very interesting!! Also side note, I can't help to recognize the piano piece played towards the beginning of thos video but I can't seem to remember were it's fron. Is it from another ghibli film??
My favourite scene is all of the Studio Ghibli movies is in The Cat Returns when the cat guards are searching for Haru in the maze and the ones with the walls attached to their backs in order to move the maze around all manage to line up in a row and ending up getting knocked down like dominos! The sound of them all meowing as they fall down gets me in hysterics every time!
I just love your analysis of anime I appreciate your cultural and human assessment. I had never heard of this feature...will have to watch it sometime....Still loving Space Dandy though :)
Hm. I don't know that Cat Returns doesn't stand as high as Whisper, if we take away the nostalgia factor. Whisper is a beautiful story in its own right, but Cat Returns has a lightness that makes people want to watch it again and again, while Whisper is more weighty and barely touches on Baron or Muta as characters themselves. To each their own, I guess. Still, lovely video.
I love this kind of videos!! So well researched. Keep it up!! This has a special place in my heart because of Whisper of the heart. P.S: any chance you make a video about In this corner of the world? It’s gotta be one of the most beautiful animated movies of recent times and it needs more love🙏🏻
Thanks Kitty I may well make one after I get my hands on the extended cut of this corner of the world i will for sure be talking about katabuchi since i think he's Fascinating as a director of media
One of my favorite Ghibli movies and one I’d really like to see them turn into a series on HBO Max. Ghibli so far has been highly opposed to doing both shows and sequels. I think for this case, the Cat could have tons of adventures and I’d love to see HBO Max give them a movie level budget for a series.

Morita did Assistant Direction last year on the Ni no Kuni movie along with Momose another staple of Ghibli's films

I've probably watched this movie well over 100 times in my life. I watched it at least once a week all through elementary school. Seriously, this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
You're going from one favourite of mine to another!
were you a fan of Nasu Summer in Andalusia?
@@Stevem I haven't heard of it before, but it looks very good! (a little Triplets Of Belleville-ish)
@@hungryhungarian6880 they came out the same year even if Nasu never got a french release for whatever reason
I love both those movies!
Thank you for taking about them!
Great video as always. Be interested in seeing you do a video on Morita's other anime, Bokurano, which is dramatically different to The Cat Returns.
I'd have to check it out really , if he does another film I could see covering it
The Cat Returns will always be my favorite Studio Ghibli movie.
Thank. You. For making this video!! The Cat Returns is my #1 favorite anime movie!!!!
No worries

The sound of them all meowing as they fall down gets me in hysterics every time!
much love from egypt keep up the good work❤️❤️
thanks dude :)
I just love your analysis of anime I appreciate your cultural and human assessment. I had never heard of this feature...will have to watch it sometime....Still loving Space Dandy though :)
Space dandy is groovy baby
One of my favourite movies ❤️
I watched it for the first time today I loved this movie got good humour and a fun plot
I meant in reputation The Cat Return doesn't have the status of Ghibli's biggest film, many of my friends rate The Cat as their favourite
@@Stevem That's fair! Thanks for the reply!
So nostalgic since primary school
One of my favorite Ghibli movies and one I’d really like to see them turn into a series on HBO Max.
Ghibli so far has been highly opposed to doing both shows and sequels.
I think for this case, the Cat could have tons of adventures and I’d love to see HBO Max give them a movie level budget for a series.
who's skills are only outmatched by his own *whispers*
whisperful wit
Nice Video bro 👏👍Whisper of the heart and cat returns are both amazing movies
This was my first Ghibli movie too!
This was the FIRST movie that I watched where the Cats weren’t the enemies.
This is like the only Ghibli video were this movie actually gets mentioned.
you know you aren't wrong
Crazy! I always interpreted the cat returns as the story shizuku would later write! Awesome that someone else correlated the two
I'd like to think of it as one of her first ones , goes nice with the first time director too
muta changed his name and thats why he is always suprised when they say his name
I guess one could see Muta as Studio Ghibli’s answer to Garfield.
Baron is i love so much....i love this movie
SNAKE EATER (The cat returns)
ua-cam.com/video/4rr3pPJ4SnQ/v-deo.html
the cat returns in one of my favourite animes
This film is so underrated
Omg great news at the end!
which part?
The Snake Eater song inclusion was divine.
If it wasnt for that video this video would not exists
This film warms my heart
