This was rare in a movie getting to see him really react and respond to another musician. Even Harpo had his harp scenes separate from his (with the Big Store duet on piano being the only exception I can think of, and was more for comedy). But yeah, this is like equal parts comedy and actual serious musicianship ("noodling around", pianissimo, Carnegie Hall; they talk like professionals, not just characters in a movie). It's really impressive. This is probably actually my favorite scene of his.
"Love Happy" is always panned, yet I think this scene and several involving Harpo, clearly bring their genius forward. As old as he was Chico knows the piano like his own hands. His command of the performance is exquisite, particularly when he introduces "jingle bells" to the rendition. Note that some of their earlier material gets recycled in this film. It's still funny as heck. The USA should at the very least, issue a postal plate block of the four Marx Brothers. BTW, this was the first Marx Brothers film I ever saw as a little boy. I was hooked forever after.
I am a tin-eared piano player myself and when I need a boost or a pick-me-up, I'll play this duet. Its without comparison!!!!! Chico is my all-time favorite piano player-NO EXCEPTIONS! His fluidity on the keys keeps me coming! They were-by far-the BEST!!!!
I'll comment. This is wonderful! I've watched this about a dozen times over the past two or three years, and I'll watch it a dozen times more in the future! The actor playing the violin really is playing. I can't remember his name, but he was quite famous. Chico and Harpo really were great musicians. Harpo was always clowning around, but have you noticed how he takes his harp playing quite seriously. We'll never see their like again, but thank God for UA-cam! And thanks for posting.
Thank you for posting, can't believe I just now found you. All the hours Chico ( & Harpo, see other movies) must have practiced to be so good that he (they) could noodle around with so many types of music (and multiple instruments!) and make it seem effortless, while still being beautiful! Isn't it sad that human life is so short? How I'd love to see the Marx Brothers (play) live.
2 more years you couldv been a Plumber hahahahaha oh god fancy saying that to someone who played the violin who was able to keep up with chico amazing just amazing ❤️🩷💙🙏🙏🌈🌈☔️☔️🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘💐🍀🦋🌻🙏🙏🌹💜💟☮️☸️🕉️🌻
How the hell did he do those chromatics at 5:00 ????? I have enough trouble doing them the ‘proper’ way, but that’s unbelievable!!! He really was a genius - making the difficult/impossible look easy!!

I'm a retired music teacher, and this has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
I have watched this movie...one of my favorite scenes from this classic musical film...very good musicians...
Absolutely fantastic, you don't see talent like that anymore.
Chico did this same routine on the radio. It was even funnier there with a live audience laughing.
he even did it in THE COLLEGE BOWL
The best. It really shows off Chico's solo act.
