- I posted this clip of an interview with Master Kanazawa, Kancho, because his words are an excellent guide for us all to live by - especially today, New Years Day 2007. Enjoy - Jon Braeley, EmptyMind Films.
My mum and dad were 2 of the 3 original students to be taught by this incredible man along with Shiro Assano upon their arrival in England in the 1960s

When i was 11 years old, After a seminar in Melbourne I think it was 5 others and myself were chosen to go to lunch with kanazawa. He has a lot of truth behind everything he says, even when he jokes.

I was lucky enough to attend a Shotokan class in California led by Kanazawa-sensei. I was an 8 year old blue belt at the time and I had no idea what kind of man he truly was. It's cool to see that he stands as an inspiration to people even today.
I trained with Master Kanazawa and, during one summer, lived with him. Of all his many qualities which I respected, it was his character which I most admired. For that reason, I have kept his portrait on my office wall ever since.
Kancho is a living legend. Just attended a seminar in New Hampshire and he, as well as his son, Nobuaki Sensei (5th dan) are such an inspiration.
The quality of the video is superb and should be on public television. What a great way to capture the subject for that don,t know. Thank you
Whatever you say is "ok" by me Sensei - you are the embodiment of Karate-do. I first met Mr. Kanazawa a few times in the '60's when we were both young and he was visiting Mr. Nishiyama's dojo in LA where I trained. My fellow teammates and I held him in awe because of his skills and had a nickname for him - the only name we could think of that applied: "Superman".
This man is one of my heroes. I wish i could meet him one day. If i had the money I would train every day just like him cause I wish to reach his level of understanding of karate.
I've never met him but he seems like a very genuine sensei with a truly loving nature.
H.Kanazawa Sensei's words are very true ! Only great sacrifice and willpower can bring you this far & only with a pure heart without any desires & hope. a famous saying within Zen also...

I beg to differ. Having met the man, trained with him, broken bread with him and talked extensively with him it is certainly not only about money. The man is truely humble. He gives very freely of his most precious comodity and always had - his time. He takes the time to explain a technique and has immense patience with all of his students. He takes sometimes more than an hour at a seminar or competition to sit and sign suits and to talk to students. A true embodiment of true budo.
Kanazawa Sensei was an amazing human being, as well as his mastery of Karate he was kind and treated everyone with respect

drmark10 thank you for agreeing with me. this world needs more martial artistts like you. i have been studying goju-ryu for 5 years now and never once have i had to use it for self defense and never once have i hurt someone with it and for that i am grateful

yes, totally agree. I have practiced 20 years in shorin ryu under an okinawan who has done it about 60 years, and this is always the way we train. Of course everyone has to test it when they are young, but if wisdom prevails, we can learn from our older sensei. gambatte!

Maintenat j'ai arrêté l'enseignement. J'ai commencé le karaté à 40 ans passé mon 3ième dan à 54.Causes douleurs mais ça me manque DUR DUR de vieillir
ive trained with him evrytime he steps into australia, ive takena 5 year break after starting sinc ei was 5, im now 20... he remembers my family and i always and its always to train under him or his son (whos a freak!!!!) looking forward to seeing him in 2012!

To call him amazing is a huge understatement. I know...I have trained with him several times in my Martial career.
Awesome is a good word to describe him.
He's just saying to have confidence in yourself, and to keep trying to be the best you can be. There's nothing mystical about it.
Nice comment. I agree. Its aggravating when people suggest that a man like Kanazawa is only after money. Its not about the money, its about his love of karate. Now... with that being said. The man is certainly entitled to make a living, just like anybody else. He's got to eat too. It just so happens that he makes his living off of karate. What's wrong with that? Without people like him, none of us would know anything about karate. We should be thankful. The haters are jealous. Osu.

Shihan Kanazawa is indeed a living treasure. One of the greatest living Masters of the Martial Way.

I've had a training whit him yesterday in Brussels
lol. i live in ohio, was raised in a small farm town. and i can tell you that even in that environment, the americans were wealthy. even the farmers in our counntries make good money. go to the middle east or asia and see how much profit a farmer makes, go to south america and see what the average family lives off of. it would make ur head spin. btw, thanks to the uploader for sharing this karate with us=)
My sensei's sensei was a student of kanazawa
Shihan is the certificate that allows a black belt karate practicioner (no matter which dan is) to become an instructor and therefore to open a Dojo and teach Karate

what ever you say abou this sensei can be your own opinion but sensei kanazawa is amazng :) aged 80, 10th dan hes doing great for his age and is amazing at his karate i hope that when i get into the dans that i am able to be good like him and follow in his footsteps :))

There are so many people commenting that karate is boring because it's slow. It's slow in this video because Kanazawa is 73 years old and he's TEACHING. No need to do it fast and strong. Watch a karate lesson, DAMN it's fast and strong.
I don't know much about shotokan as I practice Korean style. Is shotokan similar to Kyokushin? This gentlemen has the quintessence of a master, humble, patient, good technique, right mind :) Seems he has made the world a better place; as masters should

I think the art of teaching in martial arts is fading away. When I was still in Tae Kwon Do as a kid I wanted to go to karate because my friends started going. My one friend had a Polish sensei that never got angry or lost his cool. It was a weird vibe in that dojo it was peaceful and everyone regardless of rank was in unison. Looking back that place had a steady flow to it but I never trained there because we moved out of Chicago a month later. I never saw another sensei like him.

Martial arts It's like climbing a mountain you can do it from different paths but you will arrive at the same top.
They can be different in tecniques but they have the same idea inside them...kung fu, karate, judo and other are similar to the one who really know them.

if you train right, your joints get stronger, tendons stronger, core stronger. but most people only hurt themselves.
Man I'm a brown belt myself and I'm 16 years old an probably faster than Kanazawa but I admit, I couldn't beat him. There is a reason why he hold the 10th dan!

I am perfectly aware of that as I am a shotokan practioner. Shotokan-ryu and Goju-ryu are both seaprate styles of Okinawan karate though. Your last statement could be understood in a way that Goju is a sub-style of Shotokan, while it actually is not. Goju-ryu was founded around 1930 by Miyagi Sensei, a student of Master Higashionna Kanryo. So in a way Master Kanryo was indeed a founder of style that later became to known as Goju. Shotokan however was founded 5(6) years later by Master Funakoshi.

@AndyRaslan Empty Mind, means letting go of the effort, the learned way.... so that you can act spontaneous and natural in the moment.
So i would say yes... it all points to the same mindstate, the same level of attainment in Martial arts.
Kanazawa Sensei is a Grand Master all the way, he is the real deal.
Well... I've only seen the sport side of BJJ, but I admit that I don't know much about it, because my experience with BJJ was so short lived. I don't think, I'll ever make it to the Gracie academy, because I'm busy with karate, but I definitely will look into the different side of BJJ that you speak of (very interesting). I agree that so many styles are bastardized, mostly for money or entertainment. Thanks for the info, and thanks for the nice discussion. I'm not used to that on here. Oss.
I think its just a matter of being smart. Build slowly, and know your limitations. If you get hurt, take it easy on the injury until it heals etc. Based on your comment, I think you probably agree with this. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Very interesting. I've also come to that conclusion. Trying to always be Mr. Tough Guy is a very stressful way to live. I honestly think that it can give a person a heart attack. Just keep it in reserve for when needed, than flick the switch. (hard and soft, fast and slow, yin and yang etc.) Be humble and catch them by surprise with an unbelievable show of force, when they least expect it. Bait them in. Oss

I've trained with him about 6 or 7 times, he so odd..he walks around and looks like he could keel over at any second then gets into a stance and throws a gyakasuki that looks like it could level a house!!
@renshiboom kancho obviously has different meanings, it also means the chief instructor of skif - japan, therefore the chief instructor of the world (kancho) which is the highest position you can have in the shotkan karate international federation

@ImIwilliamImI I think the "American Dream" gives people the choice to do whatever they want, and so most people obviously pick the easy path, which is what I think Master Kanazawa is referring to.

@Raitsogen look man he is 72 years and he looks so strong ,thats what we say martial arts , I have been practicing karate for 13 years ,since i was 8 years old , and i felt a deference when i stopped doing it ,I was extremely strong when i was doing karate ,but now i feel like i am weak..............karate is the best sport

No, 10th Dan is the highest rank in Shotokan. Shihan is sort of an honorific title (means master instructor). A Shotokan practioner called Shihan doesn't really need to be a 10th or even a 9th Dan, as the title is mostly distinct from the dan system.

@khairuleven "Empty mind" means simply being here and now. The clutter of the mind takes us away from being here and now. Kanazawa is preaching the benefit of staying present. Nothing "bullshido" about it.
hahaha yeah me too, in my case he shouts like crazy when u are just exusted and just cant kick more and gets angry with anything, i would love to hve a sensei like kanazawa, someone that also teaches the mind control and focus that the art mst have.

I meant tough as a compliment. It takes a lot of endurance and toughness to do BJJ. I lost one of my matches because I ran out of gas. That was a long time ago though. I'd like to think that wouldn't happen today LOL. At any rate, it seemed pretty tough to me. My only point was that I prefer karate for self defense, over BJJ. The ring is different. But for self defense, whatever works for each individual is what is best. If BJJ works for you, great. There is no BEST martial art. Good training!

Is this "Mushin" concept in any way similar to the "WuJi" Shifu is trying to teach us in Taoist Wushu? I know "Mushin" means "Empty Mind", while the concept I'm trying to grasp is stillness of mind and removal of any additional or useless things in the mind.
So... how do you get a Dan 10? What are the "kata" moves of Dan 10?
was this video shot in 2005? so does it mean Sensei Kanazawa is 77 this year (as of 2010)?
