I've always been a huge Checo fan. But this podcast made me love him more. Seems like such a nice, down-to-earth guy.
I was always under the impression that Checo came from money, for some reason... But man, I was wrong. Amazing story about Checo's rise to F1.
He's best friends with Carlos Slim... helps probably :)

And although NOT wealthy they were "firmly established middle class". For whatever reason many foreigners think middle class Mexicans are rich cause they travel, spend much and often get to study abroad.
@TheGschultz LOL! Heard that many times! BUT not at all. Consider this: Mexicans are bad money savers, hence the excess spending. Mexican private Universities are expensive, so studying abroad makes sense for some, especially when there are scholarships & grants available in many countries. And well vacationing abroad is quite common for most cultures in the world, that doesn't make the whole world rich...
Of course he comes from money, don be stupid. His father was able to contact slim. Also his father is a fuckin thief... So...

@@drc911 I'd only seen Checo speak in the Paddock Pass videos. This was the first time I'd heard him talk in depth about how he started racing.
@@johnbouttell5827 I was surprise that the broadcasters of Sky News in England and NBC Sports in the USA were always saying that Hulkenberg and Ocon were way better than Perez, while he was always on top of both in the standings. I guess F1 is a European sport, although some of the very finest drivers have come from Latin America.

I already liked Checo, ever since his F2 days. Now that I know his story in detail, I admire this man so much.

They aren’t underrated, more than 80% of the community likes them and I think every f1 fan thinks that these drivers are decent.
@@RotationVII The problem is that they aren't just "decent". They are great drivers but their cars make them only look decent. Hulk is in my opinion on par with Ricciardo or Verstappen.
Perez and Hulk have been the best two midfielders for years now Hulk definitely world champion material in the right car and certainly would have put up a better fight than Vettel past two years if Hulk was in that Ferrari

Ocon was better than Checo. Checo just had a better network than Ocon. That's it.
@@katafalk12 Ocon is the protegee of Mercedes (Force India engine provider) and Toto Wolf. Sorry, but he had a fair shoot and Perez beat him. He is good though, which speaks even better of Checo.

@@marcoar3109 Check the standings at the end of the year. On Sunday Checo delivers better than Ocon. Those are numbers, not opinions.

The only thing he forgot to mention was that his ability to manage his tyres comes from his karting days when he didn't have enough wheels so he had to save them as much as he could and learn to deal with old tyres
I have always loved checo. He has always carried force india on his shoulders and kept that team alive. As an indian, he did a great service to me (even though the team is not really Indian at all lol). Much respect, i hope to meet him one day and give him my regards, and i hope he gets a shot at the WDC
I'm just happy a team like Racing Point managed to survive.

People calls him a pay driver just because the name of Carlos Slim is behind him. But it doesn't mean that his money is always for him to take it as he wants. Escuderia Telmex is managed by Carlos Slim Jr, (the real man behind Perez, not the father and top 10 millionaire.) And every person who knows Carlos Slim jr and his way to manage his business knows that the investment levels on escudería telmex are not to high as people would think. It works like a lot of academies, they support talented drivers(for example, pietro fittipaldi has been sponsored by Carlos Slim and Escuderia telmex too) and gives him the economic support to help them to get a seat and make his way and grow on his own. I mean, Checo never had the chance to buy a seat like Mazepin or Latifi because he never had that money for him to spend.
Obviously it helps a lot to get a seat when the name of Carlos Slim is with you but we all know that F1 is full of billionaire people supporting diferent drivers and it doesn't guarantee that you're going to get a seat.
Wow, this changed my impression of Checo. I thought his Tom Cruise looks got him into F1 - I’m kidding. What a down to earth nice guy. I was totally wrong about him. I’m now a fan and will root for him from now on.
I absolutely love this podcast.
From Sir Jackie Stewart to Charles Leclerc it has brought me so much closer to the sport.

I'm a Ferrari fan since '91. I also respect Hamilton very much. I think he is reliable and fast. A couple a years ago i took a special intrest in this driver. Perez. Watching closely his performances, I realised this guy is maybe the best driver in F1 right now. And for sure one of the most underrated pilots in modern F1 history. I cant help but feel sorry for him, and for me, as a spectator of this show. Of course. He made it to F1. It's more than almost any motorist could dream. But this guy has skills for a champion.
Well said,I totally agree he is one of the best drivers in F1-if he was in the big teams he would be winning races regularly & good enough to push for world champion-why is he so underrated?

Checo my favourite driver in F1. i have been following him from the Sahara Force India time after all these years of waiting this year he has a competitive car . i am waiting for his podium to celebrate now .

I enjoyed listening to this episode from beyond the grid. Checo is one of my favorite F1 drivers of today... He's open, honest and also a great man. Also, I'm glad that he has a seat in Red Bull for 2021 season.
EDIT: My youngest brother just recently passed away at the age of 18... I'm listening to some episodes of "Beyond the Grid" for me to recover from the loss of a loved one... 😔😔😔

The fist time I saw checo driving was in 2010 in gp3 Monaco he started on pole and I like to think myself as a good driver but watching him so close to the barriers and holding a angry pastor Maldonado all the race. I think to myself man thisnguy is awesome

If only the wingmen thingy in top3 teams was gone checo would been in one of top3 cars since 2016. He deserves way too much better car. We can't imagine what all he can do in a title challenging car.🙌🏾
There is no 'wingman thingy' at the top 3 teams. At least not in the begin of the season. Just at Ferrari. Bottas only helped Hamilton twice. Perez was too early at McLaren, he wasn't good enough at the time. He's very good now, but the top seats are taken and since he's not the guy who was quick immediately like the likes of Leclerc, Verstappen, Ocon, Kvyat were, he's probably not going to get that chance anymore, unless they are in trouble for drivers. Fact is however, that they are not, and in fact that there are too many drivers, even under contract at Mercedes. They had to dump Wehrlein and still have Ocon and Russell sitting on the bench.
@@djoetma I agree with you but the little I know is that Mclaren was on his way down. Nor him or Mclaren were at their best at that time.
@@TheOzcar17 True. But even in weak cars you can show that you're good. Look at the drivers that have driven for Minardi. But luck is part of being a driver in F1 as well. Perez was f.e. lucky being born in a rich family and having the help of Carlos Slim.
@@djoetma sorry, havent watch that long jaja since 2016. But yeah, can deny Checo has been lucky but the guy showed more than decent talent 2016 and 2017, imo.

@@nordimejia5790 1. Checo va ganando, por poco pero va ganando. Obviamente debes de tener contento al patrón que casualmente es padre del rival a batir. Basta con que papi Stroll haga algo al auto, mande poner gomas usadas o directamente haga que se gasten muchos segundos en pits (ya se vio este año con la parada de Checo de 5 seg. cuando el promedio es 2-3 seg.)
2. Aunque el GP se venga abajo no significa el final de Checo, evidentemente tendrá mucho menos auge el deporte aquí PERO Checo realmente depende de los sponsors y el apoyo de Slim. Y si Checo saliera del deporte y el GP se quedará aún así seguirían vendiendo boletos, son cosas que no dependen de otra.
3. Wey, si tanto te valiera verga lo que hayan hecho o no los Pérez para llegar a la F1 NO estarías viendo un podcast de literalmente SU VIDA, tranzas... neta te apuesto que tanto tu como yo hemos hechos tranzas, el que esté libre de pecado que tire la primera piedra. Su llegada a la F1 quizás pero desde que estaba en Sauber demostró que de que era capaz, 8 podios en autos que no están hechos para siquiera pasar del 6o puesto pues dime si eso no es suficiente para cimentar una carrera...
So humble and true, the rarest combo to find in F1 or anywhere .
Pity he didn't ask about VJ Mallya. I still wonder what kind of man he was to the drivers and personnel.

Another excellent interview. I really enjoy all of them. This one was a big surprise. I got so many insights into getting to F! and staying in F1. You should interview Daniel Kvyat who is probably another driver who has been through ups and downs.

@@benhollanders7911 Yes, but If it helps people... Lets not forget F1 is a huge organisation. Also you can have 10 people doing it at the same time. Here in UA-cam, you can do community subs. Get 10 people to do it and give them an F1 TV Pro license for example.

Did Max, Leclerc, Kvyat, ocon.. got podiums in their 2nd ever race? They had not podiums till they were not sitting on a Top 3 car.
Checo has beaten every teammate till date. So what are you talking about? Bottas was beaten by Checo despite that Williams being better than the Force India at the time.
His race pace and tire's management is wise also. Checo has always been the guy to take fight to big guys and unfortunately that has been his biggest enemy coz teams want "yes men" as their #2 drivers and not like Checo who would challenge any Lewis, Sebastian or any other world champion. Look at the way Hülkenberg is dominating Ricciardo at the moment (if car doesn't broke) that shows how good Checo was and is.!!

@@bilingualilliterate5404 thanks for the heads up about that. Yeah Ocon is pretty vocal but its always good to hear both sides for a bigger picture. He has no reason to humor the topic unless he wants to. Doesn't take away from how amazing a driver he is.
i just met him at the Guadalajara airport eating subway then boarding a plane to Houston. sad to see almost no one knew him or recognized him.

@@kingposeidon4046 Checo is an excellent driver, appart from Stroll ,Button and K Mag he's the only driver in the hybrid era that has made podiums with a team that is outside the top 3, he's a great driver who only needs a good car to shine
