  • Edith Stein (also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross or Saint Edith Stein - 12 October 1891 - 9 August 1942) was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Christianity and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. When the Nazis conquered Holland, Teresa was arrested, and, with her sister Rose, was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Teresa died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz in 1942 at the age of fifty-one. In 1987, she was beatified in the large outdoor soccer stadium in Cologne by Pope John Paul II. She is canonized as a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church; she is also one of six patron saints of Europe

I had a block when I first tried to listen to this - my head got in the way (I have commented below). Thankfully a wise teacher, Samaneri Jayasara, came to my rescue and I was able to move the listening into my heart. Then something awoke and I found this to be one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard. I 'heard' a teaching way beyond the words being used. Thank you.

Wow, this was profound. I don't normally care for Christian-based philosophy but I have a life-long acceptance issue with being female and this felt empowering and beautiful to me. Like I want to embody this. I listened to this over and wrote it down in a little letter to keep for myself. I want to read this often, this feels right to me. Thank you so much, I'm really touched by her words.

    * The woman’s soul is fashioned as a shelter in which other souls may unfold
What a beautiful quote, sentiment and truth. Quickly reviewing my history there are a few women within which my soul was able to unfold, where bondages were freed due to the shelter of the incredibly big heart of the woman.

The womans soul speaks as an expression of comfort. It cant help but offer comfort to any form of suffering it sees. Her arms are always open and if she turns away it is at a price of deeply held regret that is never forgotten for many years.

Recently heard her mentioned for the first time in a talk Rowan Williams gave on empathy. She wrote something marvelous on the subject in 1914, The Problem of Empathy. To summarize what he said about her, empathy is not ones own consciousness, its nature is shared consciousness. To understand oneself one has to imagine a perspective that is not one's own. In crude terms, how does one know the back of one's head exists? Someone will reassure you . One exists in a zero point of orientation, it has to be mapped with other lines of perception. For to know one's ownself is to imagine ones observers. One has to imagine, to project into a perspective that is not where one is. (Empathy sounds great, lets have more of it! Must track the article down) His talk available on this platform - Ethics and Empathy

"The woman's soul is fashioned as a shelter in which other souls may unfold"
This is partly true, but an incomplete truth. In today's world the woman's soul is based on shaming mechanisms. Very Kali-like energies in the feminine today.
The aspect described in the quote is one facet of the feminine, the pure divine mother archetype, but all souls have their stages, and all have their shadow aspects as well as the light. The devouring mother aspect is likewise part of the woman's soul. And culrurally we ignore this at the peril of society, and likewise do women a disservice by tethering them only to the maiden-fair, or the divine mother roles. And it speaks nothing of the crone, the often discarded and ignored aspect of feminity. Considered beyond a useful role.
Culturally over the last century or so we have emphasised female emancipation, not only from relational and role duties, but also from motherhood, from their biology, from marriage. And this degree of emancipation from their biology comes with a wider cost at the soul level.
This leaves a lot of wounded and rejected masculine energies, but also a lot of women who don't understand their greater gifts or how to use their nurturing capacity. When that reaches critical mass, then you see world wars erupt. The masculine shadow has to release those repressed emotions. And the shadow aspect of the feminine then cheers on the wars and wants the brave hero archetype of the soldier. This is why in hinduism it is considered that we are in the kaliyuga, the darkest phase where wars and antagonisms are at their worst. The role of the feminine soul in wars, not only nurturing or healing is often ignored.
This is the very point we are now at in the world. Women wanted freedom from their role as being a shelter. The outcome is that the world-soul becomes darker as a result. At least until the dust settles and the world is fatigued and exhausted by the violence and chaos.
Anyways the quote feels like an unfair half-truth and one which causes much strife and confusion due to the expectation placed on women by it.
Preferably men and women would learn to be shelters for each other rather than portray one as only light and the other as only dark.

When the soul chooses to inhabit a female form, then it becomes the soul of a woman’s body for the time it is within that body. There is no issue with duality in such an understanding.

Christianity believes in an eternal soul of each individual(though not in an egoic sense), as did Edith Stein. It doesn't reduce God to human dialectics of "One" or "many"... He's both. It's not not an "either or" with God, but a "both and"... God is Eternally One and Eternally Many. God is a communion of Persons, yet One, without any "fusion, confusion, or blending."... Thomas Merton put the Christian perspective best, he said, "There are no i's in Heaven, there is only the integrity of the Person"... Personhood is never destroyed, though the ego and passions are, ultimately it is beyond our comprehension, who we truly are, in God.
