  • Up at the crack of dawn to get these empties to Lincoln in order to start the first London service of the day. Its an EMR Class 222 and it will eventually join to a second set at Nottingham to form a 10 car set. We cross the ECML on the level at Newark and the video includes information of that crossing being renewed. It includes maps (kindly authorised by New Adlestrop Railway Atlas) and we run back as far as Loughborough so you can see where we left the route in the St Pancras to Derby video.

    Our son drives the train from Brighton too London and a few other places. He said when he applied to become a driver, over 1000 applied, and after the exam, only 12 were selected. He says the early morning shift is murder.

    Hi Don, you information regarding training, exams and competence checks was really interesting, I think that we (the travelling public) take a lot for granted when we climb onto a train and have little appreciation of the high levels of professionalism the driver, and other crew of course have. Thanks for uploading, a great video.

      Thanks. They really come down heavy on trainees with 13 assessments in the first year but they monitor us with a combination of exams, observed rides and unobtrusive downloads from the data recorders.

    This is great. I'm self isolating and hiding from the Coronavirus at the moment. To keep fit I've got an exercise bike. I watch your videos whilst pedalling and stop when you stop. Single Yellows means setting 1, Double yellows; 2 and greens 3. When you get a kick on I move up to 4 but can't keep that for long.
    It'll get me through these months in confinement.

      Some change through the passage of trains over track circuits. We will eventually get in cab signalling which is really a radio controlled method of controlling movements.

    • @tramathiak2238
      @tramathiak2238 4 роки тому +1

      Some signals are fully automated, and as Don says change aspect via the passage of trains over the respective track circuits; some signals plated as semi-automatic normally act in an autonomous fashion but can be manually replaced to red (danger) by a button on the signaller's panel/screen, (usually to protect minor level crossings when there is a slow or abnormal load waiting to cross). And there are other signals which normally always act as fully controlled signals, but which can be set to fully automatic, again by a switch on the signaller's panel/screen if very early in the morning or late at night, and the signaller knows that no diverging routes will be required for several hours. (From an ex-signaller). :)

    Years ago in the Southern U.S., they used to have work gangs called "Gandy Dancers" who would sing rhythms to keep every one pulling together. They would shove their long steel bars under the track, one half of the team on the inside of the track and the other half on the outside of the track. They would click their steels on the rails till they were all in ca-dense with the singer. Close your eyes and listen...click, click, click pull... repeating over and over moving the track about one inch at a time till it was straight.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому

      Very interesting Michael. Yes, a lot of people don’t realise that the track can be manhandled in such a way but in the Uk they will often use long pry bars to straighten little wobbles out.

    46:10 there is a similar crossing near where I live in the Netherlands. Difference is that it is a 90 degrees crossing of 2 electrified double tracks.
    recently discovered your channel, you have answered several questions I had for a long time.
    I assume "sleepers" are the beams the track is laid on? We call them "Bielzen" in the Netherlands. They also used to be on top of the ballast. they used to be made of Oak, Beech or Red Ironwood (at least in the Netherlands and as far as I am aware Germany) and kind of nice looking, now they are ugly and made of concrete. Old "sleepers" are very popular for use in gardens and playgrounds overhere.

      Thats a really nice thing to say. I wasn’t driving this one but the driver is really professional and his knowledge os spot on. Mine is quite good but honestly, I have to work at it. There is a lot to keep up with especially if you take it seriously. You can get away by “winging it” to some extent but if anything serious happens you need to demonstrate your actions very carefully so it is self preservation. I spend quite a lot of time going through the Rule Book and I was a driver manager and took loads of rules exams so I retain some of that too. Its a great job though and for the most part nothing untoward happens and I love every minute. I hope all is good for you out there in that lovely sunny weather.

    I noticed that most of the line between Nottingham and Lincoln has a very low line speed (60 or 65 mph). Especially considering how straight and rural it is (I was expecting 75 mph at a minimum on such a line). What's the reason for that? Weight restrictions, perhaps?

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому +1

      We don’t always get to know. I drive trains over lines that seem to cry out for higher line speeds but they are mysteriously low. Sometimes it is the infrastructure (track bed) and sometimes it is signal sighting and sometimes it just seems traditional.

      Not many but they do occur. Every crossing is risk assessed and Network Rail use various forms of mitigation. Of course people will take risks and every now and again it ends in catastrophe.

    Hi Don. Thanks for a great video. I used to commute along this line from Lincoln St Marks to Nottingham in the 1970s on first generation DMUs. I would always try to sit behind the drivers cab and get the view out of the front of the train, so got to learn the road quite well!
    Just one point: With regard to the red signal at Collingham, this was because the level crossing barriers are kept open to road traffic if the train is due to stop at the station. The barriers are lowered when the train is ready to depart. This is to reduce delays to road traffic I believe. If the train is not due to stop, then barrier operation is normal. There is a similar arrangement in the other direction too, due to the presence of another level crossing just beyond the station.

    Hi Don. Is the double amber always a sign that you are catching another train up or does it also mean that the next signal could be single amber and the warning chime is longer for dbl amber?
    Thanks.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  2 роки тому

      Not being pedantic, just for info, we don’t use the term amber, its always yellow because the semaphore distant signals were yellow! The same warning is used for two yellows, one yellow, red or even a forthcoming speed restriction. Its not always for following a train per sé, it could be we are being slowed down to stop for some reason. Thanks Chris.

      Hello again Jim, nice to hear from you. Yes It depends on the facilities at the starting point. If they can be cleaned, fuelled, serviced and the location is secure enough to avoid vandalism, they can stay at remote locations. Often the trains work in service both ways but the first of the day has to be brought in. Its not so unusual in freight. A train might take stone from top to the bottom of the country then return empty.

    I do wish someone would tell the good people of Nottingham not to flush the toilet while the train is standing in the station.
    On a more positive note, didn't the day clear up beautifully? Sitting here on a grey, dark cold and wet December day, it's good to remember the summer we had in 2019.

      I know what you mean about the loos. Most of the newer trains now have toilet tanks but the older ones still flush and no amount of signs seems to register with the offenders. It cleared up a treat Chris and the return journey on the same day is that run from St P to Derby.

    I have been working this patch for 18 years, with memories of trudging back to the access gate with 2 Possession Limit Boards hanging over my shoulder , then seconds after handing back to the signaller that 1st empty stock comes screaming past. You mentioned at the beginning about working all hours. I remember signing on at 02.10, after notices etc walking to Kings X stabling point, coupling 2 class 31's in multiple and then working the 03.50 four coach semi-fast parcels train to Hitchin. It was the unwritten rule that the Kings X Secondman coupled the loco's together and the Hitchin Secondman was to uncouple them. The Hitchin crew would then work the train to Peterborough and we would shunt the lead loco to the UP sidings and work a semi-fast passenger train back into Moorgate.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting times Ray. That would be in the days of mixed traffic I guess where you might work loco hauled, freight and DMUs. We’ve just got the Class 68s but they are permanently coupled to the Mk 5 stock. Hope you are well and have a good Christmas and New Year.

      Don As a second man I only ever worked on mixed traffic duties, never on DMU’s, although I did get to drive a couple of times, including HST’s from Bounds Green.
      Prior to my BR days I passed out as a driver on the London Underground based at GOLDERS GREEN
      BTW. Whilst at Waterloo early in my career I worked a test train (4 REP) up and down the main line from Surbiton to Woking trialling a signal information system. It would report the aspect of the signal after passing.. it for some distance. A prototype of TPWS etc..
      I left the railway and joined the Metropolitan Police where I went on to serve 30 years. I came away with two medals, a long service and good behaviour and a QPM.
      Thank you for the Christmas wishes, these are reciprocated to you and your family. As far as my health is concerned I had a triple bypass in 2016 after my 3rd heart attack and found out two weeks ago that two of grafts have failed with both of them 100% blocked along with others. Due to my age and other medical conditions they have refused any further surgical intervention.

    What's that gantry just after leaving Nottingham for (1:55:13)? It's not a signal gantry, it looks like a catenary portal that was optimistically put up in the hope that one day wires would get that far

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому

      Very observant Andrei. Its a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut but there are occasions when for some reason they can’t bury high tension or signalling cables under the track and that is a means of taking them over instead of under. You can get a better view at 29.29 going into Nottingham.

    I'm Oaky with the "wipers" now:)
    That was another "amazing video " Don !:) The"maps are a great help to me as I'm from "Cambridge, Ontraio, Canada"
    That train must have had every seat filled by the time it got to London ! How many seats would that 10 car train have ?
    When I was over there in 1992 one day I rode up to Liverpool from London, Euston then went over Sheffield and then down to St. Pancras.
    What a dumpy old place it was back then ! :( I can only imagine what it is like now... :)
    Just wondering when I went from Liverpool to Sheffield did I travel over "The Pennines" ? Just wondering?
    Again Don thank you for sharing this with us!!! :):):)

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому

      Heyup Harry, nice to hear from you. It would have 504 seats in a 10 car set like that but you can get rather more standing. They have a “crush load” rating in the UK of 6 standing people per sq metre (yard) so you could probably at least double that in extreme cases. Yes, when you travelled the route from Liverpool to Sheffield you did cross the Pennines on what I guess would be a Class 45 and coaches. That will have taken you through Totley Tunnel which you can follow in my Manchester to Sheffield video. I’ll be dioing it again soon all the way to Cleethorpes on one of our express’s so watch for that one too. Have a nice Christmas Harry.

    Both these 222's sounded like they had a 'flat' wheel. Is there a limit beyond which the driver can refuse to take the train, but signs it off as defective?

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому +1

      Yes - providing he or she can hear it (it may be well down the train). There are standard demarkations for speed. Over 40mm flat would require 20mph and above 60 would bring it out of service. Of course there are in track measuring devices (wheelchex) that monitor flats and feed the info back to the operator. Network Rail can and do prohibit the use of a vehicle long before it gets to the above limits.

    Good ride ! A question concerning the 2 trains combined. Obviously, 2 trains will have a minimum of 2 power units. As I am somewhat unfamiliar with British locomotive/train classes, do these trains have a power unit on each end, and if so, are they both powered during the trip? Also, when the trains are combined, are all power units utilized?
    By the way, good to see a video from you, as it's been a while.

    • @doncoffey5820

      Thanks Richard - I’m working on the next one starting this coming week. Those trains have an engine on every vehicle each rated at 750HP. With 10 vehicles that is of course 7500HP but the ratio remains the same so any improvements in acceleration are only due to more wheels giving better traction.

    Hi Don,
    At 51:30, there's a series of level crossings and I wonder where this is. Randomly looking on an old OS Map I remember seeing a line where it appears a road or lane zigzags across it an using multiple level crossing to link those section. Im just wondering if that was it.
    As for the rail over rail crossing, this isn't a preferred solution because of the increased wear caused by the impact of the wheel on the rail head edges at such a sharp angle. Here its a combination of cost saving (no bridge) and space saving (no double junction or conventional cross over). Thats why they're quite rare. They do work well but the maintenance schedule most definitely cannot be skimped on these at all.

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820  4 роки тому

      All the crossings are named in the video so you should be able to easily find them between Nottingham and Lincoln. Yes that crossing is far from ideal and there have been may plans for grade separation and a bridge but so far no money has been allocated.

    You had mentioned driver training in this clip Don and i'm guessing this applies to signallers too which brings me to tell you a story about a derailment that should not have happened it was at Connington South i think the place is called. After the said derailment of the 22.30 Kings Cross- Edinburgh on either March or May The 5th 1967 the signaller on duty was jailed for two years for the willful neglect of his duties. Having returned the home signal to danger when the train was within four feet of the signal he then opened the points before the electric circuits locked them. Even though the 11 coach train was running at 75mph the speed at which the signaller worked to obviate the safety devices was sufficient to cause the rear four coaches to leave the rails. A sad story indeed but from what i heard thankfully no deaths. But another brilliant clip you put together Don.

      Heyup Russ, good to hear from you. The Cummins engines in those 15Xs lay on their side and tend to accumulate oil and diesel when idling. It soon clears when they take power. Yes, we crossed the junction, I showed a clip as reminder! That certainly looks like an old trackbed but a quick look at various historic maps suggests it was new a railway but an old culvert/dyke. Most crossings close automatically but they do sometimes sound an annunciator in a manned crossing. Have a good Christmas and New year Russ.
