there were no middle school when this was written, kids were lucky if they even were allowed to go to school. Andersen himself was seen as the ugly one and was lucky to be able to study beside coming from the poor sociaty. beside also having a teacher who didn't like him and when kids didn't behave back then they were often beaten. Then he became a very big storyteller with his novels fairytales and poems so yes his point is to be careful who you call ugly because everyone can evolve to become a big white swan.
