In my urban-suburban area, my Phantom 4 Advanced can only go roughly 800m from the controller. Range increased tenfold when I took it out in the middle of nowhere.
I don’t think is easy, some place has strong winds and if you didn’t calculate for it means is good bye. Sometimes people don’t say anything as over water can be boring. This doesn’t mean is easy.
